John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on 3 January, 1892. As a child he loved to read and write. In his early teens, he became interested in the invention of languages, and created his own, called Naffarin.

At 16, he met the love of his life, Edith. They married in 1916. He delayed his enlistment in the First World War as long as possible until he completed his degree in 1915. He also served in the Second World War as a codebreaker. He was a professor at several institutions, including Oxford.

The Tolkiens had four kids: John Francis Reuel, Michael Hilary Reuel, Christopher John Reuel, and Priscilla Mary Anne Reuel. He was a devoted father and enjoyed telling stories (including The Hobbit) to his children. Many of JRR Tolkien's works were collected and published posthumously by his son Christopher.

Edith Tolkien died on 29 November, 1971, at age 82. JRR Tolkien died 21 months later, on 2 September, 1973. They are buried in the same grave, and their tombstone reads:

EDITH MARY TOLKIEN
LUTHIEN

JOHN RONALD REUEL TOLKIEN

The recommended reading order for the Middle Earth books is: The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, and finally, The Silmarillion.

It is not necessary to read The Hobbit before the trilogy, though readers often find The Hobbit a suitable entry point into the series because of its more simplistic style. The vast majority of Tolkien enthusiasts suggest tackling The Silmarillion last due to its density.
