I understand that Sony and Microsoft aren't as fair as Valve when it comes to game server hosting, But I have a rig I would like to use to host a cheap server for me and a few friends. I don't want to buy an overpriced subscription for 100 slots when the most on the server at any given time would be at most 15 players. It feels very wasteful when the server will sit idle for most of the time, wasting my money.
Also, It would be nice to fix problems with my server on my time, not whenever the service decides to fix that issue. I completely understand that the large server hosters need to follow the troubleshooting standard, and some issues are Rust Console's fault, but I don't need to be apart of a large server malfunction if I self host.
It's understandable that rust console would take a hit in their profit, but it would add longevity to Rust console. It would allow for better use of resources on Gportal and Nitrado for those who can't afford expensive server setups. And it would cushion the impact of a service provider going down, and not take every single custom server down at the same time.
Self hosted server could also support more players or larger maps than a proprietary Rust server. But that doesn't contribute to any point I'm trying to make.
All in all, Self Hosting would be a net positive to Rust Console given time. I understand the devs need revenue from the subscription of server hosing, but then they could just make a monthly subscription of like 10$ to have your server appear on the server list, and allow direct connections for private or smaller servers.
If there is an explicit reason custom servers can't be self hosted, I would like to know.
