Check out some youtube videos that go over the basics. The game gives you basically no instruction.
Might be best to start out on a low population server until you get a decent understanding of the progression.
Slap down a small 2x1 base and upgrade to stone with metal door ASAP.
Try not to be scared to lose gear. You're going to die often.
