It seems Mojang have changed the certificate used for the session server which has prevented older versions of the game (1.16.5 & below) from being able to authenticate due to the old version of Java 8 they include
This affects everyone who is using these older versions of the game, are launching through the official launcher (which includes those using Curseforge too) and have not changed the Java version to one they've installed themselves, even on vanilla instances
We're currently discussing this issue internally and working on ways to resolve this issue for Essential users but for now, we have closed support and chat channels due to increased tickets & messages regarding the issue. In the meantime, using a newer version of Java 8 or the game (1.17+) will allow you to connect
