ok so basically I accidently downloaded skytils before forge, and It said I chose to open skytils with mc launcher

then when I downloaded forge, it just opened up my mc launcher

If I understand you correctly, your problem is that forge is opening with the launcher instead of java? If so, this program will make forge open with java which is what you want

Is Java a completely separate thing than the launcher?

The thing you're trying to fix is being able to launch the required JAR file. Java is a programming language, but it gets compiled into a JAR file. In instances like this, Windows doesn't know what these files are, which require tools like Jarfix.
