It's only just occurred to me - should I have taken "breaking change" in the latest release notes literally? And therefore my efforts to accomplish this currently futile.

If you look at the unmodified episode template it will show which fields are available. I think there is channel id legacy if you were using that, but I don't think channel number changed.
I would compare the rest of the unmodified template with yours to see what changes you may need to get it updated
