I think we should also look at PEP 810 as a point of contrast though. That 100% was "some people go off into the wilderness and solve the problem". But when they came back, the community response was a mix of
- "why wasn't I consulted?" (which we could mostly ignore)
- "yep, looks like you solved it! I see a typo here"
The implementation of PEP 810 lazy-reified-imports is probably net-net more complex than the implementation of 817 will be in aggregate. But it's complex whereas 817 and 725 and other difficult packaging standards are complicated
We could all understand 810 pretty well within 5-10 minutes of reading.
PEP 810 also had the "benefit" of the PEP 690 history. I think during that discussion, folks were mostly positive about the idea, but not the implementation, so 810 came back with a more palatable take on the idea.
