honest geyser
#

the name says it all

#

english diseases are so complicated lmao

#

My usual way of thinking is that "apnea" should be called word-to-word like "Not-breath-during-sleep" as in my native

crude moat
#

Dang. I see the logic, at the cost of more letters.

#

There's a similar sort of thing in German.

honest geyser
#

yeah i think there is

#

not that i remember it

#

lmao

crude moat
#

In German, for example, glove is Handschuh, which is literally hand shoe. Lol

honest geyser
#

in polish glove is rękawiczka, which means "a hand thing"

crude moat
#

Lol

#

Awesome.

honest geyser
#

ręka = hand
rękawiczka = hand thing

#

but its glove

muted wagon
honest geyser
#

so i went through some articles about what humans usually get

#

and wrote down terms i didnt know

crude moat
#

Good idea.

#

Do you know cold, flu, and bug?

honest geyser
honest geyser
#

Bed bugs

#

ticks

#

so on

#

Tapeworms

#

You mentioning a bug kinda made that list appear in my head lol

crude moat
honest geyser
crude moat
honest geyser
#

*eats

crude moat
#

I'd say go with that instead of which, too.

honest geyser
crude moat
#

I drive the car that goes vroom.
I'm driving the car, which is something I enjoy doing.

honest geyser
#

oh okay thanks

crude moat
#

No problemo.

#

I'm using Duolingo ATM. Completely destroying the German one, and have even reported a few weird answers. Lol

honest geyser
#

You reminded me of one time when i was told about an english oral exam, exactly about one situation from it, from examiner's viewpoint, and it was like the person had to answer to "What kind of cuisine do you like?"

#

and

#

the person said "Italiano cooking.", so the examiner asked further, like "Do you mean italian cuisine?"

#

and the person answered, quite outraged, "No! Italiano cooking"

#

the situation kept on repeating itself few times more, eventually they just asked next questions

crude moat
#

Lol Awesome.

honest geyser
#

*me

crude moat
#

Yeppo.

honest geyser
#

again, typo

crude moat
#

I seeo exacto whato youo meano.

honest geyser
#

lmaooo

#

thats kinda japanese accent already

#

they always attach vowels at the end of english words

#

because in japanese language, a word can not end with a consonant except for N

#

So accent is "akusento"

#

or music is "musikku"

crude moat
#

Oh wow. That's cool.

honest geyser
#

Japanese pronounce "english" as "engurishu"

crude moat
#

I remember learning some Japanese. All I remember now are weird random words and some grammar things. Not much at all. It was a long time ago.

#

Like how they attach things like -wa to works to show the subject or something. Pretty cool.

#

Watashi-wa ...

honest geyser
#

lovely language, i once wanted to attempt official certificate from it, but i resigned, i still speak some just to survive and i can read some kanji, but still never as good as it used to be

crude moat
#

Good lord, that's really impressive.

#

Meanwhile, Duolingo has me saying: „Die Maus spielt jeden Tag Basketball.“

honest geyser
#

Or the grammar

crude moat
#

I had to give up. It was way to much for me to learn unassisted. I stood no chance. But it was fun.

#

I looked into French and Spanish, and eventually settled on German.

honest geyser
#

I still remember potential forms in japanese, it sounds crazy, like "wasureru" means "to forget", written as 忘れる, but "to be able to forget" is already wasurerareru

#

忘れられる

#

tongue twister

#

Or they even have something called 使役受け身系, this means passive-causative verb forms, so stuff like "I was forced to say" or "I was forced to eat"

#

I was forced to eat = tabesaserareta

crude moat
#

Jeeez.

#

Way beyond me. I am but a mere mortal.

honest geyser
#

If you want to torture yourself

honest geyser
crude moat
#

Yeah, I will definitely stick with German. Lol

honest geyser
crude moat
#

Jebus.

honest geyser
#

but conjugated

crude moat
#

Ah, so they conjugate words like in German?

honest geyser
#

no

#

they conjugate words totally different way

crude moat
#

Oh, OK.

honest geyser
#

german has some logic in it

#

they dont

crude moat
#

Wow, I just had my German blocked by the server. Lol

#

Deutschhörverständnis?

#

They allow that, at least. But yeah, like that?

honest geyser
#

i once had my tagalog blocked

#

tagalog is the language they speak in philippines

crude moat
#

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about that.

honest geyser
#

Try typing "ma!hal k!o ang pilipinas"
But delete the exclamation marks, type the same without them

#

This means "i love philippines" in tagalog

#

but somehow thats blocked

crude moat
#

Yep, blocked. Lol

#

Any idea why?

honest geyser
#

Which is irrational because if i type the worst polish curse words then theyre not blocked, while normal filipino words are

crude moat
#

Weird.

#

mahal

#

Bingo. K o is the issue.

honest geyser
#

k!o is blocked

#

yeah

crude moat
#

Yeah.

#

Weird. Lol

honest geyser
#

it means child in japanese

#

#

K o

#

Like they attach this to the words to mean young things, for example "a kitten" is koneko, 子猫

#

while "a cat" is already simply neko

#

No idea why k o is blocked tho

crude moat
#

Strange.

#

Yet... Kind.

#

Totally fine.

#

Kindchen.

#

Mädchen. Junge.

#

The filter needs some work.

honest geyser
#

Kurwa

#

well doesnt block me

#

skurwysyn jebaniec pierdolony chuj

#

still no block

#

i typed all the worst curse words in my native

crude moat
#

Lol

#

<tame profanity here>

honest geyser
#

lmaaao

#

I swear, we had german classes at school and

crude moat
#

I don't really know many. Lol

honest geyser
#

would pronounce schiessen the same as scheissen

crude moat
#

Lool

#

Ah, schießen. To shoot.

#

das Schießen.

honest geyser
#

yes

#

scheissen to shit

crude moat
#

Awesome

#

That could get you into trouble.

#

Entschuldigen Sie mich, bitte. Aber ich muss mal Ihnen scheißen.

#

Not sure why you'd be so polite if you were about to shoot somebody. Lol

honest geyser
#

so they ended up saying, while reading some german aloud, stuff like "In the city center, someone started shitting all of a sudden. People were scared and started escaping, but the person kept on shitting"

crude moat
#

Lool

#

Awesome

#

I think I'd scheißen myself laughing if I were there to hear that.

honest geyser
#

my german teacher was dying

crude moat
#

I bet.

#

I didn't realise scheißen actually meant to poop. I only ever heard and used it as a fairly tame curse word.

honest geyser
#

there was a lot of that, but usually it was in english, like most common occurence was "queue" being pronounced as "queen-queen"

crude moat
#

Is it reflexive? Also scheiße ich mich?

honest geyser
#

and it does

#

or a bad one was also squirrel

#

because to pronounce a squirrel you really gotta be careful

crude moat
#

I don't think I know that word.

#

How does it go?

honest geyser
#

so the thing is its not german, the problem lies in the polish language this time, we say "skurvysyn" which is an extremelly bad curse word meaning "motherf###", and english squirrel sounds the same

#

almost the same

crude moat
#

Oh wow

honest geyser
#

If you pronounce squirrel with your british accent, this is not the same

#

if you do that with american, still not the same as polish

#

But

crude moat
#

Oooh, you mean the actual English word.

#

I thought you were talking about German, still. Lol

honest geyser
crude moat
#

Das Eichhörnchen.

crude moat
honest geyser
#

and

#

when there was a squirrel, every kid kept on sayjng "look, motherf###!"

crude moat
#

Lool

honest geyser
#

the teacher was absolutely destroyed mentally

crude moat
#

That is incredible. I'm gonna have to share this with everyone I know. Lol

honest geyser
#

i did that myself

#

and all my friends do, polish cant say squirrel properly

#

i mean i think i can, but am not perfect yet

#

@crude moat

#

wait not this

crude moat
#

I wonder what others words people can't say without cursing someone out. Lol

honest geyser
#

watch that

#

And notice how he says squirrel

crude moat
#

LOL

#

The hesitation!

#

That was awesome.

#

You could tell he did NOT want to say it.

#

I'm struggling to pronounce it the way he does. Dang.

honest geyser
#

The problem is we always say our R

#

Not english R sound

#

i learned to say the english one, but if i speak quickly, i may sometimes make an ooopsie and say polish R

crude moat
#

Oh, rolled?

honest geyser
#

Yess

crude moat
#

Awesome.

#

Back of the throat, like in German, or front of the tongue?

honest geyser
#

front

crude moat
#

Aso.

#

Cool.

honest geyser
#

just like he said squirrel

#

with rolled R

crude moat
#

You get that a lot in Scottish.

#

SO that wouldn't be an issue for me.

#

Unless it's excessive. Lol

honest geyser
#

thats natural for me actually, british and american R are almost impossible for polish, unless they practiced a lot, i did

crude moat
#

Oh yeah, I remember him rolling the R now.

#

It's a heck of a lot of seemingly randomly placed R rolling. I would actually massively struggle with that.

honest geyser
#

yeah it is, thats how we pronounce english, unless we just learn to pronounce it a bit more... naturally

honest geyser
#

Your lack of polish will actually make this funnier i think

crude moat
#

Lol Awesome.

#

He really sounds Russian to me.

#

Is Polish a lot like Russian? It sounds so damn like Russian.

#

No. Not 50 grand. 50 thousand!

#

So they don't make love with us. Lol

#

Wow. That was awesome.

honest geyser
#

but in polish slang, to scam somebody is literally to make love with somebody

#

so it ended up being "So they dont make love with us"

crude moat
#

Lol

#

That's so strange.

#

Languages are weird.

honest geyser
crude moat
#

Wow.

honest geyser
#

we can talk with czech and slovaks normally

#

without knowing their languages

#

They speak czech to us, we answer in polish

#

And we both usually get what is going on

#

The problem is... until we dont. Like, russian word for "a chair" means "a table" in polish

#

Or russian word for "love" means "they like" in polish, or maybe "world" in russian means "peace" in polish

crude moat
#

Woah. That's awesome. Is it like American English VS British English?

honest geyser
#

no

#

it is very very convoluted

crude moat
#

Oh.

honest geyser
#

if i play myself a russian radio, i can understand some words, but most of what they say is not understandable to me

#

If i play myself a czech radio, i can guess a looot more

crude moat
#

„If I play a Russian radio (station?)“

honest geyser
#

yeah

#

lmao

crude moat
#

Lol

honest geyser
#

radio station, of course

crude moat
#

Definitely don't add the myself there.

#

It actually sounds German. lol

honest geyser
#

because in polish we say this the same way germans do

#

so i just

crude moat
#

Awesome.-

honest geyser
#

did the same

crude moat
#

Verstehst du gut Deutsch?

honest geyser
#

nicht so gut

#

aber ich kann some words verstehen

#

lmao

crude moat
#

Lol

#

That's like me when I forget a bunch of words!

#

Aber ich kann einige Wörter verstehen.

#

Or manche Wörter.

honest geyser
#

My best german sentence is sprechen sie english

crude moat
#

I think einige is the better choice, but 100% sure.

#

Lol

honest geyser
#

I mastered it, long years of practice

crude moat
#

Lol

#

Awesome

honest geyser
#

Long years of telling germans to fork off, unless they can use google translate, or speak english

#

Nah am not that rude

crude moat
#

Verstehst du denn diesen Satz? Wenn ich dir über meinen Tag erzählen, würdest du mich verstehen und so die Meinung begreifen?

honest geyser
#

i get everything except for erzahlen and begreifen

crude moat
#

Damn, nice one.

#

explain and comprehend.

honest geyser
#

do you understand these sentences? when you [something] about my day, would you understand me and therefore [something] my point?

#

thats my understanding

crude moat
#

Not toooooo bad. Very close.

Do you understand this sentence? If I tell you about my day, would you understand me and so comprehend the meaning?

honest geyser
#

ahhhhh

#

okay i see

#

yeah makes sense now

crude moat
#

You probably got thrown off by the Akkusativ den.

#

Thinking it was Plural.

honest geyser
#

in polish we have 7 grammar cases

#

germans have 5 i guess

#

or 4

crude moat
#

Jebus. 4 in German. Nominativ, Dativ, Akkusativ, Genetiv.

honest geyser
#

yeah, weve got 7 of them

crude moat
#

That's gotta be pure hell for a learner.

honest geyser
#

Russian has 6 cases, polish is 7 cases, german 4, and finnish is like 16 cases i think

crude moat
#

😮 Good lord.

#

16 is just evil.

#

16 ist halt böse.

honest geyser
#

polish usually hate germans on the street tho

#

cuz history

crude moat
#

Really? Wie kommt d... oh that's why. Lol

honest geyser
#

yeah we just tell them theyre hitlers

#

lmao

crude moat
#

Just remember, Nazis invaded, not the Germans you see today.

honest geyser
crude moat
#

Awesome.

honest geyser
#

but they speak fluent polish

#

Thankfully

crude moat
#

For God's sake. My message got eaten again.

#

That's gotta be handy for learning German. I wish I had a family member who spoke German.

honest geyser
#

Could be handy that i can walk five km and already am in germany

crude moat
#

😮

#

I am so jealous.

honest geyser
#

no border control

#

cuz EU

crude moat
#

Wow.

#

You're incredibly lucky.

#

In that regard.

honest geyser
#

If i replaced germany with UK or USA or australia

crude moat
#

Are you just north of Germany?

honest geyser
#

Then that'd be lucky

crude moat
#

Or East?

#

I can't remember the map that well over that way.

#

I wish I were so close to Germany. I'd love to live there... well, I think I would. I've heard some unpleasant things, though.

honest geyser
#

i live in south-western poland, which means the part of germany am touching must be east-southern

crude moat
#

Ah. Gotcha.

honest geyser
#

would be so nice to live like 5km not to germany, but to australia or UK

#

(which means id have to live in sea)

crude moat
#

Oooh, I see. Looked at a map just now.

#

You're near Prague or something.

honest geyser
#

yes

#

Close proximity to czech republic and germany, at once

crude moat
#

Berlin is just a hop and a skip away.

#

Jealous.

#

I've gotta get a plane for all that.

#

Would probably cost a fortune.

honest geyser
#

yeah but... you know it sounds fun and so on, for me it is not, because i have no interest in germany or czech, am interested in english more

crude moat
#

Yeah, I know what you mean.

#

You planning to move to the UK or America some day?

#

Or Australia.

#

Or Canada. Lol

honest geyser
#

I thought about that and more likely UK or Canada

crude moat
#

Awesome.

honest geyser
#

USA is not friendly to foreigners

#

i mean politically yes

crude moat
#

Yeah, certainly seems that way. ICE and all that.

honest geyser
#

but practically it is not

crude moat
#

It seems like foreigners there are seen as „less than“.

#

I'm sure it's not the case for everyone, though.

#

TBH, the UK can be pretty xenophobia, too.

#

I don't really care. I like seeing the variety of different people.

honest geyser
#

in germany they often joke about shooting polish so, every country can be racist

crude moat
#

As long as when I go to make a phone call (i.e., to order food), it's someone who can speak English. Lol That's quite a popular opinion, I'm afraid.

honest geyser
#

and polish joke about sending ukrainians away, even tho they migrate to poland to escape the war

crude moat
#

I'd actually love to have a friend here who had bad English. I think I'd enjoy helping them speak English. Sounds like it would be fun.

#

A weird thing to want, but it is what it is. Lol I just see teachers in programmes teaching people English, and it seems so much fun.

#

I'd love to have a German friend like that, especially.

honest geyser
#

Lmao i have to maybe just go outside and catch you one

crude moat
#

Lol

#

Get a big net. Get a few.

#

Just in-case some turn out to be weird.

honest geyser
#

Like, kidnap them and pack them into a container, some idk, jar, and send them via plane

crude moat
#

Jar? How small a German are you thinking of?

#

A little mini German. Lol

honest geyser
#

no, am thinking about a big jar

crude moat
#

Ooh.

#

That's a relief.

honest geyser
#

Like ||as gas chamber||

crude moat
#

I've been thinking of joining a German speaking group, if such a thing exists here.

#

Oh scheiße, you went there.

honest geyser
#

lmfaooo

crude moat
#

Now who's the racist! Lol

honest geyser
#

Es tut mir leid dass ich schlecht joks machen

#

jokes

crude moat
#

(not that it's racism... same race... different nationality)

crude moat
#

(obwohl es ja schlecht war lol)

honest geyser
#

war in english = war
war in german = was
war in polish = brewing

#

lol

crude moat
#

Lol

#

We all have our priorities.

honest geyser
#

or japanese "i love you" sounds like "gimme b#tches" in polish

#

Daisuki vs daj suki

crude moat
#

Obohl man vermuten würde, dass die Deutschen an „brewing“ denken würden.

#

I used to know that.

honest geyser
#

yeah

crude moat
#

I can't remember what I learned, though.

#

Daikirai, maybe.

honest geyser
#

daikirai

crude moat
#

Yeah.

honest geyser
#

大嫌い

crude moat
#

Is that love?

honest geyser
#

to hate the most

crude moat
#

Oooh.

#

Right.

honest geyser
#

lmao

crude moat
#

Oops. Lol

#

Imagine that.

honest geyser
#

like u can say "doitsujin ga daikirai desu"

#

"I hate germans the most"

crude moat
#

Cool.... I think. lol

#

Hasst du eigentlich die Deutschen?

honest geyser
#

hasst du = do u hate
eigentlich = no idea here

crude moat
#

Actually.

honest geyser
#

ah

#

no

#

Ich hasse diesen menschen nicht

#

diesen personen

crude moat
#

diese Menschen oder diese Personen. Diesen gilt für den Dativ und so.

honest geyser
#

yeah

crude moat
#

Aber in deinem Satz war es nur der Nominativ, glaub ich.

honest geyser
#

thats because i use no logic here, i simply recall some random words and patterns i know, lol

crude moat
#

Naja, du sprichst Deutsch nicht so schlimm.

#

Considering you're just remembering bits and pieces.

honest geyser
#

Schlimm

#

Shady

crude moat
#

Lool

#

Took me a moment to get that.

honest geyser
#

i listen to eminem a lot

crude moat
#

I loved Eminem when I was younger. Still love his music, but I've heard his stuff a bazillion times at this point. It's a happy memory from my Kindheit, Enimen anzuhören.

#

His older music was amazing.

honest geyser
#

Yeah, my favorites are without me, the real slim shady, rap god, so on

#

till i collapse

crude moat
#

The Slim Shady LP was my favorite album.

honest geyser
#

He was the reason I learned what "till" means in english

crude moat
#

Awesome.

#

Wie alt bist du?

honest geyser
#

because i had to google what "till i collapse" meant

honest geyser
#

Oh shit no

#

19

crude moat
#

Neunzig.

honest geyser
#

i said 90

crude moat
#

Very close.

honest geyser
#

lmfao

crude moat
#

Oh yeah.

#

Neunzehn.

#

I had a brain fart, too.

honest geyser
#

amazing

#

neunzig lmfao

crude moat
#

Lol

#

OK, since you're definitely old enough, I'll show you one of my favorite tracks. But it's pretty messed up.

#

Like, really messed up.

honest geyser
#

after all i have read in stephen king's books then no one surprises me

crude moat
#

Let me know when you've clicked it, so I can delete the message. Don't want kids seeing this.

honest geyser
#

Clicked

#

listening

crude moat
#

It's such a raw and powerful masterpiece. I love it. It's so messed up, it used to give me goosebumps. Something just utterly raw about it.

honest geyser
#

Oh god damn thats good, my first

#

Sounds like my parents when I used to have them

crude moat
#

The original on CD is best. This one's censored and stuff.

#

Oh schitt.

#

You went there, too.

#

Did you „lose“ them?

honest geyser
#

lmfao yeah

#

not really lose

#

abandoned myself

crude moat
#

Oh, OK. Dang. Wow.

#

They were toxic and you escaped their madness?

honest geyser
#

i saw too much and heard too much so, better leave

crude moat
#

Glad you got out. Hope this video doesn't trigger the crap out of you. 😐

honest geyser
#

nah

#

am chill

crude moat
#

Gut zu wissen.

honest geyser
#

Good to know

#

cool

#

i guessed

crude moat
#

Oh, my favorite part „here, I'll scream with you 'aaaah somebody help'!“ lol

#

Ja, du hast gut vermutet.

honest geyser
#

vermutet... your knowledge of verbs is quite vast lol

crude moat
#

Now this one, another track of Eminem I adore.

#

I basically listened to these and other Eminem tracks on loop over and over and over, when I was younger. Lol

#

That intro ... ah man... goosebumps.

honest geyser
#

I learned future simple from Queen

#

We will rock you

crude moat
#

Oooh, nice.

#

Lol That's awesome.

#

Good band.

#

Innuendo is my favorite album from Queen.

honest geyser
#

I repeated that sentence and i even edited it like "We will not rock you. Will we rock you?"

crude moat
#

Lol

honest geyser
#

lmao

crude moat
#

We Will Not Rock You would've been an awesome album title.

honest geyser
#

You have no idea how counterintuitive "Will we rock you?" is to non-natives

#

everyone wants to say "We will rock you?" or idk

#

Or like

#

"We not will rock you", everything except for the correct version

crude moat
#

Oooh.

#

Lol

#

Sounds confusing.

honest geyser
#

or like

#

"We did not rocked you"

#

Lmfao

crude moat
#

Verb tends to go first in English, with a question.

#

But not always.

honest geyser
#

yeah

crude moat
#

Depends how we say it?

That, for example, would be a sort of... unsure statement, posed as a question.

#

Granted, the verb is still first. lol

honest geyser
#

how do we say it is a real question, yeah

crude moat
#

German is quite flexible.

#

I love that about German, even if the word order can be weird.

honest geyser
#

polish the same, we can flip it, reverse it as we want

crude moat
#

Awesome.

honest geyser
#

my favorite was when i was studying the weirdest stuff, like "We will not have been rocking you"

crude moat
#

Sprichst du Deutsch?
Deutsch, sprichst du?
Ich glaub schon beiden Arte klappen.

honest geyser
#

no

#

Am dumb wait

crude moat
#

Probably not the second one. It looks weird.

#

Unless the last clause was an afterthought or something.

honest geyser
#

future perfect continuous

crude moat
#

Ooh.

#

Yeah, sounds about right.

#

German has no present continuous tense. That tripped me up for years.

honest geyser
#

"in a year, this building will have been being built for 20 years"

crude moat
#

Lol

#

I bet that was tricky.

#

I struggle sometimes with those sort of tenses in German.

honest geyser
#

i swear i was just about to wheep when i found out that a sentence like that is possible

#

future perfect continuous in passive voice

crude moat
#

Weep

honest geyser
#

weep

#

Damn

#

really

crude moat
#

Sounds painful to figure that out as a learner.

#

I struggle similarly in German.

#

Yeah, weep. I checked, in-case I was having a blonde moment. Lol

honest geyser
#

Ah yeah, my bad

#

Whimper, wail

#

Similar

crude moat
#

Ich würde den Hund gehabt haben, hätte ich die Zeit gehabt.

#

That was confusing to figure out. I think it might be wrong.

honest geyser
#

if i had time, i would have gone out for a walk with my dog

#

yeah

crude moat
#

I would have had the dog, had I had the time. Lol

honest geyser
#

Would have gone

crude moat
#

Doesn't translate too well to English, I think.

honest geyser
#

Third conditional

Actually not even that

crude moat

Ich hatte gehabt.
I had had?

honest geyser
#

i had had is correct in english tho

#

past perfect

crude moat
#

🤨

honest geyser
#

i think?

crude moat
#

Not sure, actually. Lol

#

What is reality?

#

Who am I?

honest geyser
#

I had dad that little bag before it got stolen

crude moat
#

What is English?

honest geyser
#

*had had

crude moat
#

Ooh

#

Hmm

honest geyser
#

I had had fever before I came back to work

crude moat
#

In a previous time, I had something.

#

I guess that sort of makes sense.

honest geyser
#

Magic of english

crude moat
#

I'd just say I had.

#

To avoid hadhadhadhadhadhadh. lol

honest geyser
#

yeah cuz youre a real human

crude moat
#

I'm not so sure had had is a thing, now.

honest geyser
#

unlike IELTS or other exams

crude moat
#

But, maybe it is.

#

Wow, apparently it is a thing. I guess I already knew it, but we don't really say it. Or maybe I do but don't think about it.

honest geyser
#

i studied that i believe

crude moat
#

Dunno if you've noticed this, but sometimes a native speaker says all sorts of things without really thinking much about it. Then when they're asked about it, suddenly the brain has a mini meltdown. Lol

honest geyser
#

yes

#

because you just learned through input

#

and i learned cuz i had to conciously analyse everything

#

analyze

crude moat
#

Yeah, like I do with German.

#

I think had had is super rare.

#

I feel like time travel would be a good topic for talking about having had had something. Lol

#

I had had been having.

#

That's a thing.

#

I think.

#

I had been having, but all that in past... so had had been having.

honest geyser
#

no

#

this is incorrect

crude moat
#

Lol

honest geyser
#

i had been having = past perfect continuous

crude moat
#

Yeah, but imagine if you're referring to a past case of been having.

#

I had.

#

What had I?

#

Had been having.

honest geyser
#

Ah

crude moat
#

I'm probably breaking English. lol

honest geyser
#

i must say english tenses are already like a fairy tale about fat british dudes drinking tea with weed travelling through parallel universes

#

For ESL speakers

crude moat
#

I had had been having a meal, had I had the money.

#

Lol

#

Oh wait, that doesn't make sense.

honest geyser
#

it doesnt

#

yeah

#

Had I had the money, I would have been having a meal

#

Third conditional

crude moat
#

Had I had had the money, I would have had a meal.

honest geyser
#

third conditional too

crude moat
#

I guess it's mainly saying had had in succession which is unusual.

honest geyser
#

"Had I had" and forms like this, when you omit "if", in conditionals, are extremelly confusing for non-natives

crude moat
#

But had I had sounds normal-ish to me.

#

Oh I bet. Because of the subjunctive mood?

#

I find it a bit confusing in German, sometimes.

#

Especially as some verbs have their own Konjuktiv version.

#

I can't even remember any.

#

I rarely use it.

#

Wären, hätten, würden, that's my lot.

honest geyser
#

I just found out I can not make a sentence like this on my own, like "had I had" or stuff

#

I always need to say "if"

#

otherwise i cant

crude moat
#

Ooh

#

Had I a car, I could drive.

honest geyser
#

yeah i wouldnt even conceive this

#

i would understand of course

crude moat
#

I think the easiest way to remember this is if the clause or sentence starts off with had or were, it might be in the subjunctive mood. Not always, unfortunately.

crude moat
sturdy shadow
crude moat
#

Were I rich, I'd... buy a mansion.

honest geyser
#

crude moat
crude moat
#

Try to form a sentence using the subjunctive mood.

honest geyser
#

its like i cant even explain my own grammar because my native is so overcomplicated

sturdy shadow
crude moat
#

I usually get told and think English isn't that hard, but when I get into the nitty gritty details, I realise there's more to it.

sturdy shadow
crude moat
honest geyser
#

must make sense

crude moat
honest geyser
#

Thanks

#

lmao

crude moat
#

The only issue I have with that sentence, is in the first clause, „a hangman“. It's not wrong, if you meant a hangman.

#

But you might've meant a hanging man.

#

Or, were you hanging.

honest geyser
#

oh yeah

crude moat
#

But if you mean you're a hangman, like.. were you that thing, then sure.

#

For example, were I a car, I'd go vroooooooom.

sturdy shadow
honest geyser
crude moat
#

I'm vague on a bunch of stuff, though.

#

Like... cases. I think I could point the cases out. I just learned all that stuff in German, not English. Most of my grammar knowledge was learned in German, as in for the language and in the language. Lol

#

That's why I just type Genitiv, Akkusativ, Dativ, and Nominativ.

#

I still feel weird typing accusative.

#

I keep misspelling it. lol

honest geyser
#

Not that I remember them

sturdy shadow
crude moat
#

Genitive, accusative, dative, ... nominative? Do we have nominative? I guess we do. We'd have to, I'd have thought.

honest geyser
#

there is more

crude moat
honest geyser
#

english has more case names than this

crude moat
#

I went shopping. Past simple.
I have gone shopping. Past perfect?

honest geyser
honest geyser
crude moat
#

Oh, apparently we just have genitive, nominative, and accusative.

honest geyser
#

I had gone is past perfect

crude moat
#

But genitive is sometimes know as possessive.

#

And I think accusative is sometimes known as objective?

#

Yeah, I definitely need to up my tense game.

#

Lol

#

That's kind of awesome.

honest geyser
#

lmao

crude moat
#

Too late. I read it. 😛

#

No offence taken, if that's what worried you.

#

I was actually thinking something similar. Lol

honest geyser
#

In practice you speak this language way better than I do, so i guess you have no reason to be offended anyway lol

crude moat
#

True. 😛

#

I wish I knew more grammar stuff, as a lot of questions people have here are about grammar.

#

I can help with quite a lot, but I have to sometimes check online to verify or because I have no idea.

honest geyser
#

I sometimes get complexes because I know that I will never speak english as well as some fat american, despite my effort, but then i kinda just remind myself thats not a competition, its just means of communication

#

Like some dumb hog, donald trump or something, speaks better than i do, lmao

crude moat
#

Es ist fast 02:00 Uhr. Also muss ich leider ins Bett gehen. Ich bin hellwach, aber ich muss schlafen. Morgen triffe ich einen Freund von mir.

Jep, gute.

#

Und Nacht. Remember, the nouns are capitalized.

#

Gute Nacht ihr beide.

honest geyser
#

americans are rich ugly and fat

But they speak it natively

crude moat

#

lmao

honest geyser
#

But still its kinda like, the fact itself makes them have it easier

sturdy shadow
honest geyser
#

if i were to be an english teacher, somehow, in some countries, i am going to be paid less regardless of how well i know english, than natives

even if they happen to be worse than me

I get it, it seems unfair in some ways that no matter how hard you work there will be people here that get things handed to them and they are not even capable of recognizing how much privilege they have.

This is the story read in the special session on Accent at..
AlanG's English Class. 2024-01-13
(This post is in six parts. The number in parenthesis refer to the sections as read by the six readers)

Peter Piano
An Adventure In Accent
as told to AlanG

(1)
Once upon a time there was a beautiful little piano named Peter. Peter Piano loved to sing his notes all day and all night. He loved to sing his D sharp and he loved to sing his F minor. He loved to jump from his B to his E. His favorite note of all was his G Major; and he would start his day and finish his night by playing his favorite note over and over. The music Peter played was beautiful.

Peter lived in a small town. There were very few other instruments for Peter to play with. And he longed to make music with others. Peter dreamed that one day, he would play in an orchestra.

But Peter did not know where to find other instruments to play with. One day, he decided to go out and find them. First, he went to the town close by. And he saw some people standing there. Peter went up to these people and said, "Hello, my name is Peter Piano and I love to make music. I am looking for other instruments to play with. Here is the sound of my favorite note, G Major.” And Peter, with a big smile, played his favorite note for them.
.

#

(2)
But suddenly they started to laugh. Peter did not understand. He had never played his favorite note for people before. He did not understand why they were laughing. And then he realized, they were laughing at him. Poor Peter. They said, "What a funny sound you make little Piano". "We have never heard a G Major that sounds like that before". Peter was crushed. He did not know what to say, he did not know what music to make. He just turned around and walked away. And as he did, he heard them continue to laugh.

As Peter slowly walked home, he tried to play his favorite G Major but he could not. All he could think about was being laughed at. When he finally got home, he just sat quietly in the corner. He could not make any more music.

The next day, when Peter woke up, he wondered, should he try again? Could he try again? Could he find others to make music with? Would the next people he found also laugh at him? Somehow, Peter was able to go out and try again. This time, he went to a different town. But poor Peter, the same thing happened again. And this time it hurt more. And this time, when he returned home, he could not make any music at all.
.

#

(3)
It was like this for several days. Peter could not make any of his beautiful music, he was too scared. He was afraid he would get laughed at. He was afraid that no one wanted to hear the sound of his favorite note. He was afraid he would not find his orchestra.

But slowly, when Peter was by himself, he began to be able to make his music again. And when he was able to listen, his notes sounded as beautiful as ever. He really believed in his music, he really believed in his notes. And he thought, "There must be the people who want to hear my notes. There must be other instruments that want to make beautiful music with me."

So he went out again to look for others to make music with; and to look for his orchestra. Much of the time, he doubted; much of the time, it was hard to hold onto hope. But he tried the best he could, he took just one step at a time, he played just one note and then the next. And then one day, he heard something.
.

#

(4)
From not so far away, he heard all kinds of notes, and some of the sounds, he had never heard before, and all of the sounds were wonderful. He followed the sounds and suddenly he saw them. So many wonderful instruments making so many wonderful sounds. There was an oboe and there was a flute and there was a violin, and so many more instruments too, all making beautiful notes.

When they saw him, they said, "Hello little Piano, and welcome; what brings you here?" Peter felt something was different here, something was warm and inviting. He was suddenly excited to tell them, but he felt a little nervous too, "Hello, my name is Peter, and I have been looking so long for someone to play my music with." The other instruments started to smile, they warmly told Peter that he was welcome to play his music here. They said they would love to hear his notes and they asked him, "Peter, do you have a favorite note?"

Peter was so excited, “Oh yes, my favorite note is G Major." He was not sure if they would want him to, but he bravely asked, "Do you think.. do you think I could play it for you? Could I play my favorite note?" "Why yes, Peter, of course, please play your favorite note for us." And Peter played his favorite note, his G Major. All the other instruments applauded. All the other instruments smiled. "That is beautiful Peter. You make a beautiful G Major. Would you like to hear our G Majors?"
.

#

(5)
Peter could not understand. What did they mean, their G Majors. Peter thought it was his note, a G Major on a Piano. But he trusted his new friends, very much. And Peter said, "Yes, I did not know about other G Majors, but yes please, let me hear yours." And each of the other instruments played their G Majors each in turn. The oboe, the flute, the violin, and all the rest; each in turn, they played their own G Majors.

Peter was so happy. Those are all beautiful. They are each so beautiful. But I do not understand. I recognize a G Major in each of yours, you Oboe, You Flute, You Violin, and all the rest. I recognize the G Major, but they each also sound somehow different. They are each G major, they are each beautiful, but they are each unique." "Why Peter," said the other instruments, “that is Accent, that is the sound of our individual voices. Each of the notes we played are a G Major, but each is in our own voice, and the sound is with our own Accent."

“This Accent is wonderful”, thought Peter. “Yes, I can hear the G Major in each, but I can also hear your special and unique voices in each of you.” ”Accent is wonderful”, thought Peter. ”My new friends are wonderful. And Accent is wonderful.”

"Peter", said the instruments. Peter turned to them. "Yes"? "Would you like to play in our orchestra"? Peter wept with tears of joy. "All my life, all my life”. said Peter, ”I have wanted to play in an orchestra. All of my life I have wanted to make the sounds of my notes, the sounds of my voice in an orchestra. Yes, please, oh please", said Peter. "I would love to add the sound of my notes, the sound of my accent to the sounds of your voices, to the sounds of your accents". And together, they made beautiful music.

The End (The Beginning)
.

#

(6)
Epilogue

Many years later, after many notes, after many concerts, Peter had learned so much about beautiful notes; about the unique versions of the shared notes, his favorite G Major and all the other notes, played by all the different instruments. Peter loved the sounds of all of their unique voices. And Peter wanted to help others learn the beauty of individual voices, of individual notes.

Peter had leaned there was one G Major, but so many different expressions of it; so many sounds of a G Major each in the voice of all the so many different instruments.

Peter decided to help the young instruments learn to use their voices, the young Oboes, the young Violins, the young Pianos. Peter worked with all of the young instruments to help them learn how to pronounce their own beautiful notes, their own G Majors and all the rest. Peter helped the young instruments learn to pronounce their own beautiful notes each in their own unique voices, each with their own unique accents.
.

There are videos, and scripts for lower beginners to Advanced on the website and YouTube. Also, explanations about grammar in English, and quizzes. This is very useful.

Hi im about to take my C1 english exam at the end of the year in hopes of getting at least 95 and above, are there any great C1 mock test resource i can refer to?
I have the Cambridge C1 exam book already, but other than that do you guys know of any great resources?
Also are there any great tips for the writting and speaking part of the test?

i can share one advice, read books and note down new words, preferably using some digital app, no need for using paper

#

reading and getting to know new words, seeing many contexts with them, is very helpful later on when you yourself write things

#

its not really a strategy for a test, but its something that definitely improves you generally, and it helped me a lot so i share it

honest geyser
#

and its just easier to have them stored digitally cuz no need to carry an additional physical notebook

#

i probably do not, since am not an exam taker so much recently. although you seem a little bit confusing to me, you have a native role, and youre asking about C1 exam. you'd pass this easily if youre a native

hollow crater
#

Hmm alright then ty

radiant oracle
#

you would still need a little help to get a perfect in C1 :p
not all natives achieve C1, but they mostly do

honest geyser
#

it would suck to speak a language for your entire life and not be above C1

#

like you'd have to maybe read no books at all, never read any documents, and idk what else, some real talent is needed to be so bad while being a native lmao. I mean bad for a native, not bad generally, ofc

radiant oracle
#

on average, late C1 is a native's level, even though they definitely have better average vocabulary 🤔

honest geyser
#

which i agree with, cuz it is so hard to measure something like this. Even the vocabulary is vague, sometimes "rare C2" words are used in a casual conversation even tho theyre "super rare"

#

am sure someone who gets a B2 on a language certificate is stronger than somebody who gets an A2, for sure, but when we go into stuff like C1 and C2 then thats just difficult

radiant oracle
#

you need skills, some even seemingly unrelated to language, to master language -w-

honest geyser
#

Yeah, for example somebody may eventually label me as A1 because of how bad my hearing is

#

not the comprehension skill, literally am like deaf
