Ph usually makes a "f" sound in English.
When you make the F sound you are bringing your upper front teeth towards your bottom lip and blowing.

As an American a lot of times when I hear people making the f/ph sound and they're coming from other countries they are usually mistakenly making a "v" or a "th" sound...
this is the more detailed uneeded stuff
An r-colored or rhotic vowel (also called a retroflex vowel, vocalic r, or a rhotacized vowel) is a vowel that is modified in a way that results in a lowering in frequency of the third formant. R-colored vowels can be articulated in various ways: the tip or blade of the tongue may be turned up during at least part of the articulation of the vowe...

Need to work on the I'll pronunciation. It's not "i'ull" the way you're saying it. You're not supposed to round your lips if that's what you're doing. The contractions that have an apostrophe (') have a specific pronunciation of it. The apostrophe has a subtle sound which you just need to learn and any word such as these: I'll, he'll, they'll, hasn't, haven't, ain't, wasn't, weren't would be easier for you to pronounce.
I am unable to provide any further information but the rest of your pronunciation apart from the aforementioned flaw is comprehensible and about right.
It's "wauta" you're right, they also exaggerate the first vowel sound.
Sammeeeeeee, I kinda know the solution. It's probably because you're speaking unstoppably and without drinking water to comfort your throat.
Or maybe it's because the positioning of your mouth is wrong. Try using a mirror and see if you move your mouth correctly.
Wow U are so good and cool I love you
Thanks
U have a very beautiful voice
I don't know if it's my phone problem or yours.. I can't hear u the sound is so low

Hey guys. Could someone give me some feedback on the English pronunciation in this video? I was planning to start a channel in English, but I feel like my accent might make people not want to watch. Do you think my accent is too strong? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q0XfRlzQCM
If someone from US could hear, it would help a lot.
It's pretty hard to understand some parts to be honest
Either make subtitiles or speak at a speed at which you can still pronounce things clearly
Although, the latter might lessen your retention rates
Ah ok, thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, it could be. The problem is that even I donāt watch many videos of people with a very strong accent in my native language, because it ends up being tiring to listen to. And I wanted to avoid that. But Iāll see what I can do.
Thanks a lot for the help.

Can someone help me critique my overall speaking like my accents, pronunciations,etc...? I have this audio clip of mine where I was reading a post on reddit that I picked randomly. I really don't know what I sounded like and I don't know what are the things I needed to improve.

I have read all of the tongue twisters and I also read the story
I hope you guys can tell or explain what I am doing. Did I perform well? Or are there any or few things that I need to practice when it comes to my pronunciation. Please let me know I'll appreciate it
Sounds decent to me
Really? Can you tell me why? Cuz I think I really sound pretentious. Like I am overusing the stress in some words
Only considering individual words, there are no major issues in the sounds you produce. While for stress and intonation donāt worry too much, as you listen to the language more youāll eventually get the hang of it
I'm gonna try this text with American English pronunciation:

I always get's confuses between there and their, is there any trick to remember which to use when
You use there if youāre talking about where a distant object is placed, while their is used when you are referring to a group of people
their is more used when talking about something someone owns, example, their house is really big
I understand English without any problems, my business is to unlock speech
"they" is used when refereeing to a group of people or if the gender of the person is unknown
I understand music and I can even watch series in English, those that are not very complex, lasting 25 to 30 minutes.

Imitate native speakers
Whats a sick accent. Like how sick would it be if I picked some irish lunatic and just learnt their accent
As long as you enjoy it i think itās fine lol

As an American, I personally like the Australian accent mate
I was lazy to find other passages so I just read the one I used in my 2022 recording šš

Usually the biggest reason people have an accent is related to the mispronounciation of vowel sounds. For instance you want to say "PIN" but you mispronounce the "I" sound and it sounds like an "E" and you end up saying "PEN" instead.

Mitch Albom- The Time Keeper
Try to imagine a life without timekeeping. You probably canāt. You know the month, the year, the day of the week. There is a clock on your wall or the dashboard of your car. You have a schedule, a calendar, a time for dinner or a movie. Yet all around you, timekeeping is ignored. Birds are not late. A dog does not check its watch. Deer do not fret over passing birthdays. Man alone measures time. Man alone chimes the hour. And, because of this, man alone suffers a paralyzing fear that no other creature endures. A fear of time running out.

thank you. anything should i improve? pls comment. thank you very much
Ohh I see, thanks for the feedback!
You and I have a similar issue with pacing, where we tend to rush through certain parts of sentences while speaking. Your pace is perfect in sentences like "You probably can't" and "Yet all around you, timekeeping is ignored". However, in "clock on your wall" or "check its watch", the words come out rapidly, and blend together in a manner that might impact clarity.
Pacing can certainly be adjusted while speaking for varying effects, and by no means must everything be read at the same pace. But having some minimum break between words might be something you could try out. You could record the aforementioned sentences with a different pace and listen to them one after the other to see which version you prefer.
thank very much, appreciated.
i'll keep practicing pacing. thank you
No worries! You're well on your way already.
hi
You've got such a clear tone while speaking! I think the only noteworthy mistakes are the pronunciation of specific words like "schedule" and "chimes". Also for "A Dog does not check its watch", I feel you're already capable of nailing this part, but perhaps the clarity there was sacrificed to maintain a steady pace. You could try that part again and compare the two recordings to check for yourself!
hello!
thanks for the insight! i'll do my best
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
Music had stirred him like that. Music had troubled him many times. But music was not articulate. It was not a new world, but rather another chaos, that it created in us. Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic there was in them! They seemed to be able to give a plastic form to formless things, and to have a music of their own as sweet as that of viol or of lute. Mere words! Was there anything so real as words?
Here's another passage to practice with!
Here's my sample attempt. Feel free free to post your own so we can learn together!
I was not familiar with the word "viol" here, so I had to look up the pronunciation. It's an instrument similar to the viola and violin. It seems to be pronounced similarly to the english word "vile".

Good job! Subtle is definitely a word with deceptive spelling, given how the b doesn't make any impact on the pronunciation. I had no trouble distinguishing your "world" from "word", though you could consider altering your pronunciation of "stirred" to rhyme more with "heard" or "bird".

The Brothers Karamazov - Fyodor Dostoyevsky
You must know that there is nothing higher and stronger and more wholesome and good for life in the future than some good memory, especially a memory of childhood, of home. People talk to you a great deal about your education, but some good, sacred memory, preserved from childhood, is perhaps the best education. If a man carries many such memories with him into life, he is safe to the end of his days, and if one has only one good memory left in one's heart, even that may sometime be the means of saving us.
Here's todays passage! The word "memory" is repeated a lot here so this is a good opportunity to nail it if it's given you trouble before.

Excellent stuff, the only slight error I can spot is in the word "sacred", where the 'a' sound should be the same as in the word "say" or "pray". In the recording it's going more towards an "ah" sound like in sack or back, but this should be an easy fix. Solid pace all throughout.
Looking forward to it
Thanks for the feedback!

Nice work! A simple mistake that you can look into is on words like "preserved", where the 'ed" at the end is more like only a 'd' sound. So you essentially say "preservd". The same applies to words like conserved, insured etc, the e before the d in these words isn't stressed in the pronounciation.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

'peace' sounded a bit like 'pierce' in a British accent. The vowel in 'peace' should be a bit higher. Just like saying 'pee' but with an s added on to the end
'hitherto' sounded too much like 'hither'. The t in the 'to' of 'hitherto' shouldn't be flapped
'therein' sounded kinda like 'the rin' (if 'rin is a word). The vowel in 'thjere' should be stressed
how about me?
I think you meant it in the british way
Because it sounds right in my ears in american english
I mean, I'm replaying it a few times and it sounds a lot like 'pissing', or like something is off with the 'i', at the very least. This could just be a me thing, though. I would ask others if they feel anything is off with that word. It may just be that you didn't make the 'i' long enough
Either way, here you're saying it fine
so that may have just been a one time issue
Hmm, that's fast speech I guess
So what is your feedback for my voice?
*recording
Thank you very much
No problem :>
Cheers!
š
Very well done! The only real mistake I hear is saying "disassociated" instead of "dissociated". Though they're similar enough in meaning that it hardly warrants looking into unless you're going for 100% reading accuracy.
ohh, I didn't even realise these were different words. After some Googling, apparently they majorly mean the same thing, except that 'dissociate' is prefered in psychology and chemistry. I had not known that, thank you š
this is interesting cuz in my native "disassociate" (dysasocjowaÄ) is almost entirely unused, while "dissociate" (dysocjowaÄ) is used in psychology and chemistry too

The Master of Mankind - Aaron Dembski-Bowden
Internment within a Dreadnought chassis straddled the border between both life and death ā an intolerable weakness that required sacred machinery to maintain, coupled with a strength of purpose so unquenchably fierce that it defied the grave. The Ten Thousand, supremely educated and philosophical souls all, had ultimately reached the only conclusion that mattered: their hesitancies and doubts meant nothing. It was the Emperorās will that His warriors live and fight until they could no longer do either. That very testament was inscribed upon Sagittarusā armoured hull by the Emperorās own carving hand: Only in death does duty end.
Another passage with ramped up difficulty, give it a try and see if you can get through it! Post your attempts and ask for feedback should you need it!
Anyone know how to approach the " sagittarrus' " word in the last sentence? I'm assuming it's a name of someone/something, but the plural possessive " s' " doesn't seem to sound right when reading it as just "Sagittarrus". Any help would be appreciated, and I look forward to listening to other attempts!

I think that's a singular possessive. I'd say Sagittarus-iz for the singular possessive and Sagittarus-iz for the plural and plural possessive
Sagittarus
Sagittarus's thing
Sagittaruses
Sagittaruses' things
cf.,
Bus
Bus's
Buses
Buses'
but with words ending in s, it's often only a matter of style whether you only add an apostrophe or an apostrophe and an s to the singular
So I'd pronounce it as 'Sagittarus-iz' in that text
You looked up the wrong word. 'Interment' and 'internment' are very similar in form but not in meaning

Hmm, I'm not sure if the vowel in hesitancies should be long or short
I guess hesitances would be short and hesitancies would be long
This is really good! I think the only things I'd point out are your pronunciation of 'border' and 'chassis'. I believe that d in 'border' wouldn't be flapped in an American accent, but I'm not too sure as I don't flap any of my d's or t's personally. As for 'chassis', this is more of a nitpicky thing, so your current pronunciation is fine, but what I'd point out is that saying it with a 'sh' sound instead of a 'ch' sound is closer to how it is said in French (which is whence we get the word). However, it can also varry based on English dialect. From what I'm seeing, the Brits tend to use 'sh' like the French, whilst the Americans go with pronouncing it with a 'ch' like it's spelt
Thanks for the clarification, my urge was also to add the -iz so I'll do that next time.
And I like the notes, I haven't given much thought into pursuing any one accent for the language , American or otherwise but perhaps I should. Generally I parrot the pronunciation presently available when I first encounter a word, but I doesn't sound detrimental to know when I'm using which.
Yours is an accent that mixes American and British pronuncation, for sure. It's not unpleasant
Shasee is a good one to remember though, gotta keep that in mind.

Today's challenge paragraph, brought to you by @ember hatch :
My father, a wise and grave man, gave me serious and excellent counsel against what he foresaw was my design. He called me one morning into his chamber, where he was confined by the gout, and expostulated very warmly with me upon this subject. He asked me what reasons, more than a mere wandering inclination, I had for leaving fatherās house and my native country, where I might be well introduced, and had a prospect of raising my fortune by application and industry, with a life of ease and pleasure. He told me it was men of desperate fortunes on one hand, or of aspiring, superior fortunes on the other, who went abroad upon adventures, to rise by enterprise, and make themselves famous in undertakings of a nature out of the common road; that these things were all either too far above me or too far below me; that mine was the middle state, or what might be called the upper station of low life, which he had found, by long experience, was the best state in the world, the most suited to human happiness, not exposed to the miseries and hardships, the labour and sufferings of the mechanic part of mankind, and not embarrassed with the pride, luxury, ambition, and envy of the upper part of mankind. He told me I might judge of the happiness of this state by this one thingāviz. that this was the state of life which all other people envied; that kings have frequently lamented the miserable consequence of being born to great things, and wished they had been placed in the middle of the two extremes, between the mean and the great; that the wise man gave his testimony to this, as the standard of felicity, when he prayed to have neither poverty nor riches.```

Only thing I'd note is that 'viz.' can (not that it ought to, but it can) be read as 'namely'

I will try
Makes sense! Haven't encountered it before, or at least not enough to have commit it to memory. Saying "thing-viz" felt more like invoking an orc sorcerer, 'namely" it is.
Sounds great! I'll try to copy your pacing next time, I stumbled myself on the first attempt and just rage-restarted.

V for Vendetta - Alan Moore
There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler

Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky
He had successfully avoided meeting his landlady on the staircase. His garret was under the roof of a high, five-storied house, and was more like a cupboard than a room. The landlady, who provided him with garret, dinners, and attendance, lived on the floor below, and every time he went out he was obliged to pass her kitchen, the door of which invariably stood open. And each time he passed, the young man had a sick, frightened feeling, which made him scowl and feel ashamed. He was hopelessly in debt to his landlady, and was afraid of meeting her.
This was not because he was cowardly and abject, quite the contrary; but for some time past, he had been in an over-strained, irritable condition, verging on hypochondria. He had become so completely absorbed in himself, and isolated from his fellows that he dreaded meeting, not only his landlady, but any one at all. He was crushed by poverty, but the anxieties of his position had of late ceased to weigh upon him. He had given up attending to matters of practical importance; he had lost all desire to do so. Nothing that any landlady could do had a real terror for him. But to be stopped on the stairs, to be forced to listen to her trivial, irrelevant gossip, to pestering demands for payment, threats and complaints, and to rack his brains for excuses, to prevaricate, to lie--no, rather than that, he would creep down the stairs like a cat and slip out unseen.```

Nemik's manifesto - Andor
Remember this, Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that theyāve already enlisted in the cause.
Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.
And remember this: the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.
Remember that. And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empiresās authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege.
Remember this: Try.```

'Behold! You are come to Cerin Amroth,' said Haldir. `For this is the heart of the ancient realm as it was long ago, and here is the mound of Amroth, where in happier days his high house was built. Here ever bloom the winter flowers in the unfading grass: the yellow elanor, and the pale niphredil. Here we will stay awhile, and come to the city of the Galadhrim at dusk.'```
He turned and saw that Sam was now standing beside him, looking round with a puzzled expression, and rubbing his eyes as if he was not sure that he was awake. `It's sunlight and bright day, right enough,' he said. `I thought that Elves were all for moon and stars: but this is more elvish than anything I ever heard tell of. I feel as if I was inside a song. if you take my meaning.'```

Of course not

Do all natives actually know these words? If so, how do they learn them other then reading a lot of books?
Ohhh sorry, my mind was focused on that last word.
Like, fancy words? Depend on the education of the native speaker, of course. If you read a lot and expose yourself a frequently to some more advanced contexts, eventually you will have a good or solid repertoire.
*of course yes

Any advice is appreciated. I'm aiming for American English

but seriously, I think one of the things you could do would be to change your pronunciation of some frequently occuring sounds. Like "th". I used to mispronounce it all the time, but after I listened to this specific sound more, tried to somehow mimick it, looked at the way it is produced (like, a graphic/animation of the mouth), then I slowly tried and tried and finally I learned it
Nah, no one casually uses it, unless they wanna sound sophisticated
That's easy just listen to how each letter is pronounced in American accent
And repeat, till your tongue gets used to it
I've done it myself
And got rid of my arabic-english accent
people casually use rarer words, normally. It's normal that even the most casual conversation may involve words that are just not common at all, because someone wants to express something very specific
if you hear somebody talking about a breakup, then they may want to express their pain very accurately and may reach for words that are kinda not so common, like "man, this is just suffering, it's merely an endless vicious cycle of excruciating despair.". Just because they want to express how much pain they really feel, and they want to highlight it as much as possible
Of course it sounds kinda odd but it can be done on purpose, just to show something, highlight something
It's not like "such words are useless", it's like they exist, for a reason. If someone wants to ignore them then 100% alright, they do what they want. But they may miss some things
Hi, coming from a native Canadian speaker, while itās true youāll sometimes encounter uncommon words in conversation, I wouldnāt necessarily say itās a common occurrence. If a person is referring to something or someone very specific, itās possible that theyāll use more nuanced vocabulary to articulate themselves. However, the words you typically use to express yourself often depend a lot on context and the tone youāre aiming for. āvicious cycle of despairā sounds exaggerated, almost a bit theatrical, or poetic. If youāre looking for a more natural response, a refined version could sound like āIt was an endless cycle of despair, and I couldnāt take it anymoreā adding emphasis to the speakers emotional state.
that's true, but really I think it's just generally better to tell someone "know more" than "ignore more". It's just more useful to know more

Can someone please tell me what accent you hear?
It sounds generally American, but this person (I assume it's you) 1. mispronounced 'endowed' so are unlikely to be an American, and 2. speak too slowly for an American (and emphasise every word, unlike any native).
I agree ^
Ah, I need to look up the pronunciation of every word I have never used or heard.
I'll record another, can you judge it as well?
I'll try my best, but when someone is sufficiently fluent, it's hard to say exactly what's wrong even when you sort of hear an accent (I'm also not a native so it's harder for me)
regardless, 'endowed' isn't all too common in spoken English (though common in written English), so don't beat yourself up over it
I have a speech impediment that makes it difficult for people to understand me without enunciating my words, this happens in my native language too not just in English.
So every time I speak it has to be slow and with proper enunciation.
Wouldn't intonation not be a factor then? I feel there's a strange evenness and duration that's more than about just speaking slowly
I feel the first one is more natural even because of the difference in word stress
I still haven't decided what intonation to use because to me it seems like every speaker has a different melody in their speech.
In the past it has been common for me to imitate the intonation of different TV characters but I could never imitate a single one consistently and would thus end up with mishmashes of words being intoned as if each were being spoken by a different person.
I tried to imitate text to speech in my first recording, I did not listen to that paragraph through text to speech beforehand though.
There can be individual but natural speech
Well good text to speech does attempt to mimic somewhat imperfectly the natural cadence of speech
Whereas some things like even syllables between all words is only something someone Japanese would do for example

If you hypothetically had the pronunciation of a native speaker, but also had the speech impediment that you referred to. There would still be a registration of foreign-ness, of course I donāt actually know how severe this supposed impediment is, and am just giving the benefit of the doubt
Do you know the sound people make when they burp? Something akin to that often gets produced and blended with my voice when I speak without putting effort into enunciating.
I don't know what it is like to speak without this impediment so it's possible that my accent acquisition did not mimic that of natives because of this impediment despite almost being a native since I was born and raised in the United States and thus acquired English as a toddler.
I feel if you acquired it as a toddler you probably would have had the accent, so maybe itās just the impediment overpowering all of it
Maybe, though my lack of speaking experience could also be a factor.
If you were raised there you would have needed to speak, unless you were only there for a short while then transferred
In which case, the acquisition period may have been disrupted
I did speak often in my early years of schooling (1st - 3rd grade) but after that I no longer had anyone to speak English with so I would only ever speak when prompted with questions by other people usually a teacher which was not often and only Spanish is and was spoken in my household so I have no chance to speak English there.
Iāll bump this for the next person to review
Yeah, sorry it got buried in my venting.
It was still within the scope of the channel anyways

āYou know what I realized?
We spend so much time trying to control everything.
Trying to predict it.
But life doesnāt care about your plans.
It moves ā fast, slow, forward, sideways ā whatever it wants.
And if you keep fighting it, youāre gonna miss whatās right in front of you.
Sometimes you gotta stop⦠breatheā¦
and just let it happen.
Let go of the idea that you always have to win.
That you always have to be right.
Because maybe the point isnāt control.
Maybe itās learning how to stay standing⦠even when everything shifts.ā
Guys, give me a hand my speaking, id appreeciated

what a bloke you are
I really like taking the lift. Never use any elevators! And these are trolleys, not shopping carts
also, only aubergines and courgettes
no eggplants and zucchinis
you kinda messed up the 'sesquippeda'
'ses' needs to be fully pronounced, 'da' is also stressed
the vowel after the 'pp' was barely audible
The o in 'monstro' gets stressed as well; you didn't stress it
often, but not always, the 'o' of the 'stro' gets reduced to a schwa
I couldn't catch that
I can go slower, my apologies
Third go was a bit messed up, but in fast speech no one's going to notice
That was literally the same one
I'm stupid lol
But still it sounds wrong to me even if it's fast
Yeah some people have keen ears
Why you connect mon with stroses
I think you broke it down in the wrong order
'monstra' is one unit
Are you sure about the syllables
you know the word 'sesquipedalian'
the 'ses' belongs to that
'monstra' comes from latin 'monstrum' meaning 'monster'
yup
No, what'd it mean?
someone who uses long words
thas the meaning of it
it's one unit. 'sesquipedalia' is also a word, it jus means 'long words (collectively)'
See you soon!

so yeah, the 'ses' isn't a unit with 'stra'
he places weird stress on the 'ra' of 'monstra' but he does keep 'ses' as a unit with 'quipedalia'

See I told you
You were wrong about the stress
Oh UK one, well I'm going for American accent so I think my way of pronouncing it was right
here is another: https://youtu.be/EJkwpvi9FjU?t=329
monstro - sesqui
He doesn't weaken the 'o' of 'monstro' to a schwa, but that's optional
@sage glen he sounds american
I guess there's more than one way of pronouncing it
Yeah, I don't know of any variants, but that may be the case
Good luck with long words lol
Piece of cake
This is a sentence I use when I wanna pronounce a few of them in a row:
That hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobic otorhinolaryngologist with pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is an antidisestablishmentarianist, how very not supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
it's missing 'floccinaucinihilipilification' but idk how to implement that into it
either way, have fun with it
Will do
"when I wanna pronounce a few of them in a row" but when would you want to
puzzling...
What is this for? US English?
ššš
when I wanna challenge myself lol
