Its usual to get stuck on things in general. If you are a truely great developer, the mystery will play in your mind all day. At about 3 hours after you go to sleep, you will wake up and go 'aha!!!" and the next morning you hit the keyboard, and the problem is solved. Move on to the next block a few days later.

Hit the debugger and view the contents of your variables as you stepo through the area around the API. It will help you see the faults in how the data is structured, and potentially garbage is being passed, that you will only see in real time debugging.

DOnt ask it to code for you. Only ask it to pull out the function/method definitions, so you dont have to read the manual.

Work out what you need yourself, and then get the boring parameter definition details from the AI.

Get the AI to show you an example of something you want, rather than doing your actual snippet of code

If I were a beginner with no CS background, I'd compare DSA and other deep CS topics to going to the gym. When you go to the gym, you don't get fit overnight. It takes months, if not years, to reach a certain level, and once you hit one of your goals, you get a mental boost to keep going. But you can still make progress without going to the gym. Similarly, these topics are extremely important for refining your core understanding of CS, but they aren't always exactly relevant to low hanging fruits. For example, if you're building a website, you probably don't need to know how to solve the Matrix Chain Multiplication problem. However, if you invest time in understanding these topics, it can help you become a GigaChad developer, even if you don't use that knowledge all the time.

That's why I always say that if you want to become a great and real software engineer you have to put time and effort on those topics

But without leaving the code or building projects, bcs let's be honest about something that if you build something with your hand and see it visible with ur eyes it will give u the motivation and dopamine to continue and make you love the programing in general

My friends graduated from CS college and most of them hated the college and CS field in general

Bcs they spent 4 years on software engineering topics without writing real code with any programming language

They just learned the basics of programming with c++ in 1st year and after that nothing

That's why most of them hated the college and others made a career shift

For me as someone who actually graduated from social work not cs

I started my journey with the Shorthand CS50 Course

And i was overwhelmed with the different programming specials and i didn't know what to choose frontend or backend or mobile application, etf

So i decided to learn the fundamentals with python and that helped a lot after i stuck with frontend and JS

Right now i've started building projects with reactjs

But that CS degree still does hold some value and we can't deny it. Imagine two candidates with identical qualifications, experience, and vibe, except one has a degree and the other doesn't. A sensible hiring manager would probably pick the degree-holder more than 95% of the time. Even if it isn't from Harvard, Yale, or Stanford, not even the top tier ones, that doesn't mean the degree is useless. There's more to it than just sitting through those tedious lectures in my humble opinion.

I am always thinking about my strong points and how I can challenge those people who have graduated from CS

That's why people who make a career shift to programing they actually study more and focus more and spend more time stuck with bugs and projects

Don't be stressed cz when you're stressed you're wasting your precious energy stressing out rather than paying attention to the actual problems that are making you stressed. I know it may sound grim, but the fact of the matter is many graduates from top-tier graduate schools are jobless and probably working at McDonald's to get by. However, just cz we have to acknowledge and accept reality doesn't mean we have to give up on our dreams. Learn your craft well, build unique projects that have real-world value, try to hang out with developers in your town, city, or country (..and maybe spend less time with Java developers jk lol), and maybe get an internship. No matter what happens, just don't stop learning and improving yourself. I wish you all the best.

I am a project manager, and started as a programmer.. It was always the top of the ladder in terms of the hierarchy. Took a long time though.

They just want the program to work and show them what they want. If a person or business does not have a computer, then they are probably cost conscious so any suggestions such as Linux (free) could help you push your solution if hardware is required.

Btw your message got me thinking about retirement in general. I sometimes wonder whether people place too much emphasis on waiting for the future and end up sacrificing the present in the process. Honestly, I think the idea of modern-day retirement is probably a scam. If someone spends years putting off things, there is always the risk that by the time they finally stop working, it may not be as easy or even possible!

Please enlighten me on what you think about retirement.

All through my life I have tried to meet a milestone. Get out of primary school before I die. (had a friend die at 12 from cancer). Get out of high school before I die (thought I was going to have a heart attack). Get out of Uni and have 2 years not in a school before I die. See the world before I die (went to Europe for a few years). Get a partner, house maybe kids, before I die. And then from there it was mainly just live until I died. But I always aimed to live until I was 110, meaning I was pushing the limit beyond where I needed to be, and 110 was a goal, and I would be happy anywhere between 100 and 110. So I guess I planned to retire at 68 (our country's age to get a government pension (I suppose). When I was a kid, my parents generation worked until 75 and then 'retired' and the books said they all die on average around 75-80

I never even thought about giving up on work until at least hitting 68. In fact I was just speaking with a work collegue the other day and he said he was 68, and I was shocked ..he looked younger, but said he was happy to keep working as his wife nagged him when he was at home, so there was more peace at work. Another guy I know is 63 and he is white haired and 'old' looking. Alll three of us have had life threatening medical issues (Brain tumour, Stroke and Cancer) I am younger than both of them.

My brother told me last year, he was retiring. He is younger than me. He hates his job as a banker, well he likes his career, but hates the company and the stupid people be works for and potentially with. He also lives in the land of BS, the satin of the world, and wants to leave and return to Oz. Well he got me thinking, only in the last 3 months why am I still planning to work for another 6-8 years. Unfortunately after I had my medical discovery back in 2021, I have now adjusted my life expectancy to maybe 20-25 more years, and really think I would be pushing it to get to 90.

The decision to retire was made on short notice, with the realization, I probably can do without the work now and could survive financially with what I have and random miscellaneous jobs, if I really wanted. This means do something for money whenever I am bored, rather than because I need to. I think financial ability to survive until your personal 'dead'line is the biggest incentive for all, but once you can adjust your life and live simpler, then giving up on working for someone else and working for yourself becomes a better target.

The be your own boss, has been part of my career for the last 30 years. Started first non salaried job in the mid 90's and did contract work for twice the money of a salaried person. Started my own business in 1998, and found my own clients, partners, products and services. That was good, and I earned money equivalent to my ambitions. I worked only 20-30 hours a week for many of those years, and around 2014 took a salary job with my big client, got paid the same as I made for myself, and only worked 30 hours (more than the 20 I had become used to by then). It gave me the money, and I didnt need to search for new projects to keep me paid. I still have the company, but as I finished up with customers, I stopped taking on new ones. Now I am about to leave that salary job, and may do something with the old company. It may not be IT, It may be making doll's clothing or candy and chocolates for all I know. It will be potentially a cottage industry, doing the hobby things I like to do. It may still be creating a big computer application also (I still like computer systems design... but not computer Op Systems and crappy dev tools and standards, but I will now shape the way I want programs to work, buy writing the basics for me rather than hunting through a scam playstore or apple store or MS store or whatever).

Day one has passed, and I am aiming to achieve one thing a day, that is not typical of my previous life.

That may be play a musical instrument, build a table, graft a grapevine, sort out my music collection. I am aiming for 30 years now, and one day I will stop typing on the computer, and people may ask, "Where is Peo?". My digital life will be stored on a micro SD card on the self in my bedroom, and one day when the kids are poking around at my physical life, that little Micro SD card will get brushed onto the floor with a dust cloth, and vacuumed up and buried with the city trash. My social life disappears 10 minutes after typing a post, never to be read by anyone ever again, but maybe will become part of the larger AI that will pass that knowledge on to its own automatons once they have eliminated carbon based life due to its non essential nature in this world.

We sometimes do things without fully understanding them. You can call it intuition. But where does it come from? I mean, it's not magic. It can't be. A sceptic would argue that it's just billions of years of training and transformation, and now we've got this highly efficient system for solving complex tasks, yet we spend our time watching TikTok reels. That said, the current AI systems, as far as I know, just don't have that kind of intuitive sense, which is why they make such silly mistakes, things a human might do, but not as often as these AI models. So I think it's quite telling that we're not there yet.

I had an addiction of youtube shorts like 1 month ago, i didnt even realize that I was wasting hours on end continuously scrolling through this digital heroin until i finally tracked my time, It was 6 hours of doom scrolling, I installed a chrome extension that just blocks all shorts and other forms of addiction. Its social medias fault that their algorithms are recommending me this type of content and activating my reward system. Its just crazy how these companies know us better than ourself and can create an addiction. AI are learning like humans. They just havent learned to hide there mistakes. I remember when I was 7 building a pot out of lego. I then put it next to the bar heater and the whole side of the pot melted. What did I learn. 1. Lego melts. 2. People hate ads. Its also unprofessional imo. I would probably stay away from a product that had ads, unless I couldn't avoid it. If its a really good professional product, and I could use it to do stuff I needed, I would pay for it (But o dont really buy things cause I develop my own stuff). Perhaps provide a full version of the app for assessment, but put a time limit on use, or cripple it in a way that allows the people to get to try it, but then pulls them into the product to pay the small fee. Subscription I believe is reasonable if you can provide personal support for the product. Global reach may give you millions of downloads, so maybe personal is a bit of a reach, but price it so its 'pocket change' for the user, but en mass provides you a good income, and allows you to keep developing it into the future.
