Gems are pretty hard to obtain, especially when you're lvl 50 already. You could exchange gems for coins, so why not the other way around? 1 gem could be exchanged for 20 coins (in use now) and then there could be 25 coins for 1 gem (so you can't get a profit/it's more expensive).
