I want to hear your suggestions for a pretty cheap and lightweight camera mainly for planetary, but to still be able to take decent dso pictures. My telescope is a sw dobson heritage 150mm and i want to make an upgrade from my phone cam

#

also i want to mention i wouldn't change my telescope, or the mount

whats your budget?

carmine moat
#

i would say maximum 200$

#

ik its not much

#

and a decent cam goes for 300$ minimum

#

but as i said i want a smaller one, not heavy, that is a big upgrade from my phone

#

i like this one

#

might consider it

#

thanks

#

also if i buy the 662 will i need the uv/ir cut filter?

#

it's not a bad idea to get one

#

even the cheapest svbony uv/ir

#

i got another suggestion from a fellow astrophotographer

#

QHY5III715c

#

same price

#

smaller

#

idk now which one better

livid dew
#

it has super small pixels, Ig the intent behind that cam was for high res imaging but tbh I'd still get a 662

#

I would reccomend the 715, it can be later used for guiding, planetary imaging or deep sky imaging with a refractor, its performance beats the 662 by far

livid dew
#

I would have said the opposite, 662 to use later for guiding

#

tbh I haven't seen many use the 715, I'm mostly worried about the very small pixels both in terms of sensitivity and file sizes

#

Most of my subs are around 16mb, and you can always 2x bin

#

The QE is great

livid dew
#

that's quite a lot for what's supposed to be a guide cam, I really meant the file size of planetary recordings

glad magnet
#

Oh, yea they will be big

#

I only livestacked my planets, i didnt do actual imaging...

#

The result was still great

livid dew
#

my file sizes where huge on the 462 and cropped, I can't imagine the 715 with like 2x the pixel count and higher fps

carmine moat
#

so from what i understood the 662 is a better choice

#

We will leave this up to you, both cameras are awesome. Both also have their cons and pros

livid dew
#

both will give you good images

carmine moat
#

i would trust the 662 more

#

even tho i like how small the 715 is

livid dew
#

the fov is the same

carmine moat
#

is it

#

also what is the thing about the small pixels

livid dew
#

less sensitive, mathematically by being smaller they have a lower chance of getting hit by photons, this matters more for guiding and dso imaging as planets are very very bright

carmine moat
#

as it is more sensitive

livid dew
#

the larger pixels would help

#

binning is an option on the 715 and it gives more or less the same resolution as the 662 and identically sized pixels

#

oh ok

If you want to try DSOs as well as planets, then maybe consider the 664 (eg Player One Neptune 664c), which has the same pixels as the 662 but more of them (it’s sort of half way between the 662 and the 585). I was considering getting one for my Heritage 150, it seems like a good fit for it.

#

Or maybe the slightly older version, 464. The older Neptune C-II has that sensor and is going for $200 from Player One,

ill check them out
