I was planning to get an upgrade from my unmodded DSLR to a Altair 183c hypercam and was wondering on people inputs and if its a good investment

It's a pretty old sensor, and the one you're talking about is just fan cooled, not TEC cooled, so that makes the noise even worse.
I would recommend saving a bit for an Ares C / 533 MC Pro, or Altair's 533c

Absolutely not

An astro cam is a very good investment, but if you're going to make the investment I suggest getting a good one

Im still using my Altair 183mc. It may be an older sensor but with calibration frames it produces nice images.
