i can beat 99% of people in a battle of knowledge as long as we exclusively talk about comets
Bet let’s fight !
wait crap how
because if its just me asking questions I know the answer too then you can just google them lol
Tbh I was just gonna have you ask me a question. Then I’d say. Crap you win
lmao
perihelion distance of c/2024 g3 and c/2024 e1?
wait no thats easy
is c/1956 r1 dynamically new or dynamically old (list source)
im gonna start copying the fun facts from the r/astrophotography sever https://discordapp.com/channels/247338197921693697/1313190375342735473 (if your in it)
fun fact! 323p soho might lose up to 10% (largest estimate ive seen) of its mass every apparition. that would imply if it continues it will cease to exist within a lifetime
and even if it doesnt it will hit the sun in about 1.7k-2.7 thousand years
No sane person would know this
Nobody here is sane anymore, with all the clouds
Fax
sunward tail of arend roland, nature
id say that c/2024 g3 is probably getting between 0 and -3rd mag
that'd be fun if I could see it
yeah g3 is not good for northeners

Not that great for us either
Woah
what happened to the corner
corner not comet
oh im blind
think thats just the horizon existing
how dare it
i order this to be stopped immediately
@lavish lark i might be able to shoot the comet just before sunrise rn
could do it tonight
hell yeah
yeah no that was wrong
Oo is this the new comet?
this was a3 in october on those dates
Ahh alr
LOl
hurts my brain
which comet
G3
ohh that
dew itr
discord sent me back 5000 years again and I came across this
Hey look it's me
Lol
Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF passing next to Mars.
24x30s
hell yeah
comet c/2024 g3 is at 5.1
Woah
sadly a strictly southern hem only object
praying on your C/2025 A1 (ATLAS) prediction rn
January 6th 🔛 🔝 ‼️
c/2024 g3 may have had a major outburst, terry lovejoy reported it as mag 3.7 a few hours ago
what this means for its survival I dont know
cracket 2.0?????
How close is it to the sun? I may go for it. Not home rn for stellarium
about the height of Mercury
Suboptimal
It rises basically as soon as astrodark ends
Ofc it's happening when I'm not home
Probably displaying full disintegration in the next 3 days anyway

Yeah idk why ppl didn't think the trajectory may have changed or smth
Probably the most likely event to have caused a 0.09AU perihelion
https://discord.com/channels/247338197921693697/1313190375342735473 for those in the r/astrophotography server check out the sister thread
if your not in it then L
is it open for anyone to join
i dont see it from searching
yeah
how do i join?
c/2024 g3 has had yet another outburst apparently
dang thats bright
methet?
cracket 2
the sequel
br
0.9
too bad it's literally southern only
like anyone north of equator will not see it

a guy in mexico saw it
ok you know what I mean
Europe is kinda close to Mexico right?? Maybe I have a chance :))))))))
i mean go for it lol
not like its really getting better after this
mag 0.1
🙀
Wtf that's so bright where are the images of it?!?!
Or is it still too close to the sun
it has 12 degrees of elongation right now
small trickle of images coming in
it is also southern only pretty much
https://x.com/vivstoitsis/status/1876585580647346281 (sourced from this)
whens the best time to see it
in southern hemisphere
im not southern hemisphere but my friend is
It's pretty shit for south aswell
I don't think I'd even be able to see it if I tried
very low, sun is 8 degrees below the horizon
*center of south america
what latitude
its a bit worse, but it isnt really good anywhere lol (1.5 degrees instead of 2)
(also stellarium mobile has it)
I knowww but there's gotta be some people from down south in this server :D
Ty for the pic tho

How’s G3 doing
last obersations have it at 0.1-0.2
enters soho c3 in 2 and a bit days
0.21 au from the sun or so
Look forward to seeing it!
Well, from SOHO at least
God I hope it does a funny and splits in two and sends one bit into the northern sky
or something
while comets do split somewhat often, no
at best in a split it would brighten a bit and maybe some faint tail could be observed low in the north
no like this
or curve the cyan one a bit
you realize how much delta v (change in velocity) that would require
idk i do meth instead of math
its going approximately fast as hell
yeah just fast as hell in a little funny and boom
northen sky g3
comets dont split fast enough lol
idk just throw the parker solar probe at it
or smthn
or like
throw the remains of s1 at it
if u throw a bit hard enough it might ouh on the comet and 💥 comet part 2, do the funny
g3 becomes visible in uk
mr pottasium this would take going a non igsignificant fraction of the speed of light
also I don't think ur c 2025 a1 prediction made it
probably I havent done the math
throw France at it then
When bright comet for north
No fr
uhhhh, not discovered yet
halley in 2061
What the
bruh
to the oort cloud I go!
uhhh
c 2025 k3
discovered may 25th
perihelion March 2026
discovered by either atlas or panstaars

also did ur 2025 a1 prediction make it
going off the dates and the average magnitude on discovery, that would be about as good as leonard on a realistic best
no
whar magnitude was leanord
4
and has an c2025 a1 been discovered
4 is
good enough
that's abt how bright a3 was when I finally got to see it
real
Your welcome
i swear if comets gets locked im actually like dming the mods or something lol
Make it August 12th 2026
Total solar eclipse with a kreutz
Speaking of kreutz, S1 stings a lot more than G3 tbh
At least to me
comets is too dead to get locked
now now g3 isnt dead yet
but yeah s1 was a kruetz and those are supposed to act similarly to eachother
Still very shitty position
Yeah S1 was on some kind of crack for sure
C/2025 g2 in april, magnitude -5 northern hemisphere comet, you just have to believe hard enough
t
I saw
I heard it can get bright as Venus if it survives perihelion
yea
im still thinking-3 max
I heard -4
But sure, still very bright
I wish it was more easy to see ):
Very hard, especially in northern hemisphere
Close to the sun
the range is between like -2nd mag to -6th mag lol
Holy
I wish I get a chance to image it
Is there a chance it ends up being higher up than expected?
Like above the horizon
no not really
that means I could catch it Venus in the daytime style
Oof

Ngl if it survives perihelion even seeing it for a bit would be cool
comets dont tend to change their position from expected very much
if its real bright then it might display a long tail that stretches enough for the north
https://hdr-astrophotography.com/comet-tails-simulations/ has a simulation of it
it would not be very bright
Why
b9 would likely render it invisible
Huh
*THE LONG TAIL
**not the -4 comet
a few degrees above the horizon right after sunset
check it in stellarium
Alr thanks
Ok seems I can’t see it
It sets at like 6pm @lavish lark
does this mean there is a possibility of catching it from the north hemisphere on jan 14/15/16th? 👀
ah nvm ig
on the 20th or so the dust tail might be visible
depending on perihelion performance
woooooo!!!!!!
bro a short just popped up in my feed about the comet, and the comments are like so excited n shit
they 'bouta get a rude awakening
even if it gets bright it still sucks lol
fr
they had their chance with A3, and they blew it
to be fair a3 was only visible to the average person from the 12th-16th
*in the north
dk much about comets, but I feel like 4 days is pretty decent
eh not really
maybe
damn, so like what is the average seeing period for a 'good' comet (Like say Mag. 2 or under)
dont, know
gimme a moe lemme check some comets
i have dug myself into a hole of research
maybe a week
problem js that there isnt really an average comet
ok, so A3 was below average, but it could definitely be worse
problem is that if a3 avoided the sun a bit more it would've been visible longer for the average person
oh well, what has happened has happened
I suppose you can look at comets from the past decade or so and pull out an average from there? It won't be super accurate but still
in the past decade theres been 2 comets above mag 2 lol
*to my memory
neowise and a3
wow that's insane, crazy how my mom somehow never saw it with a time period like that
wait 'above'?
brighter than
i see
there has been a lot of comets above mag 2 if you go the other way lol
how many comets in general tho? Like any mag. (cause the whole point was to find the general range for an "average" comet)
dont have the number off the top of my head but the total number of comets above mag 21 over 10 years is probably a hundred or more?
ok maybe Mag 21 is a little too much 💀
if you go off of pure averages then the average bright comet is actually just a kruets sungrazer
How 'bout like, Mag 7?
10-30 as a complete guess that are observable
youve been asking difficult questions because an average comet doesnt really exist lol
homemade distribution graph of peak magnitude
what can I say, just a curious lad
yeah it occasionally goes without contact for a few hours
oh wait im stupid
thats more than a few hours
general principle is the same though
11 hours until g3 should get to soho c3
is this it?
@lavish lark gonna try the comet
Wish me Luck
Someone much more north than me got it
In like 1/4000 exposure
yay!
only chance ill be able to see this comet beside other peoples images lol
What mag is it currently?
probably like -1 to -2
maybe a bit brighter than -2
no idea lol
Oh nice
Hope I’ll see it tommorow at sunrise
the one day its clear for me is a school day, sun rises right as school starts
i do not have high hopes lol
Should be there somewhere so maybe it will turn out as a cool landscape photo
- landscape would help me focus
Skip 1st lesson
kinda considering it lol
Might be worth it
Same
I can’t wait
I wish I could get the tail but impossible
Since we gon be imaging at sunrise literally
This better be like A3 where a fat cme happened right as it was closest in soho
ill attempt tommorow
btw
any tips on camera settings?
this is a single frame
iso 100
1/2000s
f8
is it too dark or too bright
i'm taking as many of these frames as i can until the earths rotation is a problem
4 sec period
Honestly sun is too close. You probably need IR filter and longer exposures.
You have to pretty much be seeing other stars
It’s mag -2
And also, a friend of his got it in daylight
Like blue sky
It’s just a bit challenging to find sadly
the photo from ISS is so epic, wow
yea, still a day or so until perihelion
Cool
Hope it survives
Wasn’t it right?
Keep in mind the sun wasn’t that big it’s just overexposed
wouldn't be suprised
Wdym
i have minor doubts but yeah that's probably it
Hmm
I wish there was a way to confirm
I have my doubts because it was kinda too close imo
According to stellarium atleast
Is stellarium accurate with positioning?
oh and on the survival front, it doesn't bode the greatest but not the worst either. comet west in the 70s had a similar thing happen and it went from mediorce comet to a great comet.
not expecting the same from g3 but IF IT SURVIVES it might be brighter than some predictions
I’m not totally sure what this means
Oh
That would be insane if it becomes brighter than predictions
I hope it doesn’t kaboom in the sun
poor g3 😦
theres 2 now
@lavish lark on second thought it might just be glare
I can’t really see it in other subs
For some reason
ah rip
yea
no they arent moving very fast from eachother
nothing I can't do
so comet yes or no
comet right now is bright but i dont know how that will change over time
Hard to get in northern hemisphere
I reccomend attempting in sunrise with a good view of the horizon
for sure
https://umbra.nascom.nasa.gov/pub/lasco/lastimage/level_05/250112/c3/ raw data looks nicer lol
Lowkey looks like a hyperactive mini-west with no gas (pic below is of West, btw)
Holy moly
More recent one
that tail
Very reminiscent of west
And very similar to the simulations
Gives a bit of a cheseaux vibe
But yeah, very large striations
It could be a patch of noise
in the day?
Yes
looks like G3 survived ?
maybe?
It could break up at anytime Just gets more unlikely
this is certainly an error but it goes hard af
g3 has left soho c3
now only stereo (this is the crappy ultra compressed data) can see it
Sad
should i try G3 tonight ?
it is like 1am for him
what mag is it rn
havent got any recent estimates cause its left soho but somewhere along the lines of -1 to -3
could I get it around sunset then
like right after sun dips down
yeah solid chance
wahoo
No it’s impossible don’t even try
i think both you and i just suck and got unlucky
I’m kidding lol
Maybe
@velvet cipher I think this guy is spitting fax
This why we can’t get it
celestialsail got it with a 300mm lens, i think we're just bad
Yea…
location issue
I'm at 40N.
I'm at 54N.
Not really relevant for daytime observations anyway
Did G3 last night. Pretty bright. Very hard to see without processing the image.
Also a bit of smoke around
Potassium carbonate is mid
Cooper carbonate supremacy
How? Any tips?
I got this which is exactly where the comet should be
I’ll go to a beach today to try at sunset
But unfocused ik
Could just be dust
Just pointed to where it should be, used the sun as reference. And took photos.
Low iso for lower noise on the exposure triangle.
Alright thanks
i think we can both agree sodium carbonate is the better than both
I used the last of mine yesterday
Making copper carbonate
Because I ran out
yummy
I haven't had the chance to make anything recently
my dad was renovating the garage but the cold paused work on it
I’ve been having fun with copper compounds recently
Lucky the cold isn’t a problem in Australia
I cannot find this comet bruh
I couldn’t see it at all until I processed the images.
Oop I see a tiny dot
No way
Bruh I NEED to get it today
@velvet cipher
ill try process them now i think its below the horizon now
nope got nothing
I got the comet
Wow
I can see it with naked eye
No processing at all
I wonder how to stack these comets photos
@lavish lark
i have big chance today
i realized i can go into my apartments swimming pool and its rooftop
i have view of the horizon perfectly
holy shet\
Equator
what settings
ok nice
Like -6 altitude
i need some tips before i go
alr
Its actually depends tho i use 1/100 iso 3200
okk
and also how do u focus on the sky without seeing the comet
any advice on that too? pls?
I capture at 18.41 P.M
I use the tower
hmm
Over there too make sure its focus
Depends with your place
hmm
i have yes
Greatt!!
No
ok nvm
united arab emirates but yeh
its visible from the place
but small
i think it will be good
for focusing
You can use that as the focusing
And i use 10x zoom to make sure its perfectly focused
coool
yea i have something where it zooms automatically when doing manual focus
The comet itself is pretty bright
i can try in an hour or so
im aware
Goodluck with that!!!
i really hope i get it
Just prepare your setup first
BROOOO
its not crazy trust me
That will show the detailsss
its not like real zoom idk how to explain it
Ahhh i see
but like the real fl of it is 357mm
but i can ger pretty nice shots of moon and saturn thankfully lol
@compact flare well bye i have to go for a bit thanks for the help!

Alright good luck with the shott!!
thankss
Use lower than higher. Otherwise it’s too hard to find ngl
im aware
i will use like 400mm or so
ofc i can zoom in and out tho for finding
i really do hope i find it cuz i have had troubles with that and stellarium doesnt have AR mode
@hoary mauve got my subs, now im gonna stretch fingers crossed.
Nice. Also background extraction
i cant see em in single subs
i have definetly captuered where the comet was positoned tho
im quite confident
weird
im looking on my sd card and theres no recent images showing up
dont think i got anything
i have other subs too but i wont really bother trying idk
my focus was prolly bad ig
Yea I give up
There’s no way I’m ever getting this comet
Hey im wondering how to stack these comet image
Use dss?
It has comet stacking tho
Siril.
Unless you want to go through all of your images and manually tell dss where the comet is
iirc no
Iirc?
if i recall
you dont have to do that
you have to do it 3 times
first middle and end
maybe not even middle
as someone who used siril for comet stacking, never again
I reccomend it over dss for normal deep sky but comets are pain in siril
comets are pain in every software
Yes, but it gives very poor results most of the time.
it needs at least 1
The logs probably explained why
In siril you can align with all stars, with 3 stars, with two stars, with one star, with pattern mattching... Well, many ways to do it.
(and now it will be also possible with astrometry)
?
all of the above have been stacked with dss
i guess star traing exists but I dont really mind that
Oh, you have star trail, well in Siril this is easy too then 🙂
well yeah I like the look
oh i agree with you there
😉
that one does suck
yep
but i like the trailed stars look
Sure. ANd in Siril this is very easy to process :). We even have a tutorial for that
Behold the copper collection
And my other non copper chemicals
yum
Welp- my exposures of G3 from the 14th turned out to be out of focus, except for the test ones
im convinced this comet doesnt exist
Give it a few days
It’s still mostly in the suns glare
people gotten it in the day and i cant even see it when the suns below the horizon
It’s very tricky
On the 20-21. I’m going to a tall mountain
To hopefully get it near the horizon
nvm i went out again and easily saw the tail naked eye
as i got the camera it went below the trees :/
that shit is so bright tho tf
Wait
We will get higher chance soon?
not for you
its strictly a southern hemisphere target
wont be doable from india
Someone here got it
I’m in uae
wha
Yea
i sware you where india my bad g
India is just the closest lol
It’s alr
anyway thats even worse
lmao
its hard to get even from the southern hemisphere lol
Someone here got it tho so I tried anyways
can i see
do you know who did it?
what?!
are you west coast?
oof
east
Lucky
u are east coast aswell
i know
but i couldn't see it
im heading up to the mountains soon
on Monday Tuesday ish
Nice
So yeah it won’t get much better for you guys
Yea I see
I mean atleast I gave it a try
Better to try than never know if I could get it
by the end of the month g3 won't even hit the horizon for me lol
forever relegated to skies which i cannot chart
skill issue
holy

i can shoot it with roki tonight now i know where it is in the sky
dew it
i finish work at 8:30 and its visible naked eye at like 8:45
and i dont get home till 9
Oh, rip 😦
Ooooh people are seeing the comet already
it's supposed to be clear skies tomorrow
maybe I should try :>
I see it's very close to sun... So I will not look at it, let my camera do it xD
Probably don't need ND filter, f/8 and very fast shutter speed should be fine, right?
If you live in the northern hemisphere I wouldn’t really attempt it
Why not?
ong bob dropped his best image
Just processed my shot of this sucker on the 14th
I had to work with very few exposures and stack manually but eh
Thankfully one of them had the comet right over a cable which somewhat enhanced it, so I used that as the meain image while the others smoothened everything out
Cable looks a bit wonky though
pretty sure its an image from namibia
dayumn.
It lowkey looks like comet west so much
Wait u took this??
No
Np
Very bright woah
Did you get any images ?
ya
this is my comet
stacked already
i crop it too much
and i only stack 20 frame of 80 frame
i did it manually on photoshop
if anyone wondering
Hopefully
I’m sad there isn’t much of an ion tail
How big is it rn?
Oh oof
Oh sick
And fairly bright, quite a bit more than milky way
Sucks that A3 had a full moon
Otherwise I'm convinced I would have seen a ~25deg long tail
Single exposures showed all of it
Oh you should of seen a3 from Australia
During perihelion
It was new moon at the time
And the tail was massive
Yeah pre-perihelion A3 was impressive
And so was post perihelion but yeah moon had it all ruined
(As I predicted but no one believed)
Still naked eye visible tho
The sky was so bright that I had to cut my exposures short unfortunately
But yeah result was still awesome
Twas A3 on the 1st october
wish A3 had a brighter ion tail
It wasn't too large but it was just graceful
its barely in my pic only just
So magnificent, watched it from a bortle 2
Ion tails suck tbh
Even if bright, seeing them is very challenging
unpopular opinion
I couldn't get a glimpse of it with neowise
Btw, I wonder if G3 will display the appendix that sunskimmers have
Like McNaught
Also from now on ppl should start attempting images at the tail after the nucleus sets
Gonna do it
how u guys stacking this ?
Manually LMAO
oh
Thank god I had very few exposures to deal with
looks like i aint stacking mine then
I mean, surely there is another way for you
Mines are during daylight
Oh I see, that's a bit unfair! 😄
space rock
what a scene
Oh it really is coming into view there
AWESOME
Reminds me of perihelion neowise so far
Still not close to post-perihelion from dark skies
Let's hope it gets the glow-up soon
Ignore ass stack but it has nice structure
👀
holy cow
Oh that sodium!
Surely right?
very nice!
no
no
Hmmm
I just saw an image that looks a bit weird
If someone is thinking about shooting a close up of the comet to see the coma's structure, please do
That is all I'll say
He has a goto telescope
You don’t
It’s much easier for him
Why not
If your not using it I’d gladly buy it off you 😂
I’m using it for imaging lol
Wow
Its literally different than mine
@hoary basin it looked exactly like this image naked eye
Image is taken the exact same night btw (not mine)
neowise lookin ahh
it looks like neowise not looks like neowise
you get me?
neowise morphology not neowise anything else
Lol
Oh ok
Yea true that
Though perihelion G3 was very different
yea
Not even similar to mcnaught
not even similar to c/2002 v1 really
Yea
Idk why ppl were comparing them tbh lol
It reminded me of west but now it's lowkey a scorched dust-rich neowise
Hmmmmm
Funny quote lmao
Tbh all of us were like that
"Like- surely it won't be a southern west, right-?"
We were at that god damn kreutz comet
Doing its own crack
it might but on the other 0.4au
although that would be very strange
Fair actually
we have comet lovejoy at home
Yea
Bar-shaped nucleus means goodbye
Well
Headless comet, actually
That January 14th outburst was probably the disintegration
That is if what we are seeing IS indeed a bar
this image unstretched doesnt show the bar though (and is of a higher quality)
Uhm
Yeah that looks like a bar-shaped nucleus to me.
It can still be visible though, as C/2011 W3 was
But yeah it will progressively just vanish with the tail remaining only
Ppl are saying that brightness went down quickly too
Tail is still great though
Dang that’s good
Yea
The nucleus disintegrating is concerning though
See posts, photos and more on Facebook.
?
U mean here?
See posts, photos and more on Facebook.
@hoary mauve sorry for the bother but do u have any tips on how I could possibly get into good focus without seeing the comet? I felt the method where u focus on surrounding buildings wasn’t good
Try focusing on the moon or maybe a bright planet (Venus, Jupiter)
Perhaps even a star (not the sun) if possible
Focus on Venus
i don't think g3 is visble in dubai anymore
Only reason I wouldn’t get it is cuz I’m stupid cuz I have the perfect opportunity
It is
Stellarium isn’t accurate?
well the main part at least
ok, have fun
Thx
Came back down to get some food cuz I have a better chance in 20 mins when it’s darker
it doesn't have a nucleus
And also there are some clouds
Wait what
scroll up
tail is brighter but no high surface brightness parts at the nucleus anymore
only been one estimate on cobs and its 1
sure i dunno
Ye
@lavish lark
This one time
Out of everyday
Clouds.
My
Stupid ass prolly wouldn’t have gotten it anyway
Thx for the help tho 🙏
yeah you were cooked beforehand
Lmao Fr
Ouch
Nucleus is gone but the tail remains great
it better survive till wednesday
well it will still be visible by wednesday

no garuntees it will be an impressive object
lemme check how lovejoy did
ok so very approximately (this is not very accurate) every 0.1 au that comet lovejoy got farther away from the sun post disintegration, it got a magnitude fainter
yeah g3 aint doing the hottest anymore
so its now a kinda mcnaught kinda lovejoy comet
@lavish lark Can I quickly remind you when I said that this comet was going to be pretty good. And you were like. Nah I’m not even counting it. It sucks
yeah i also didnt count it because it sucks for me personally
and who the heck saw any of this coming
Me
its brightened by several magnitudes intrinsically lol
well i guess not really
it did disintegrate
the general feeling at the time was that it wasn't going to survive:(((
and also that wouldn't have been anything too amazing even if it had
Well. I had faith. And lots of copium
you were right
although I did begin to change my mind a bit after that
also wtf 65 notifications
It doesn’t really matter tbh. You can’t even see it
I have a problem
well maybe a little bit of the tail
can people even ping you at all
like does that even work
(for its intended purpose of having you look at something)
it very clearly functions as a mechanic
There
Fixed
0 pings
@lavish lark I just never look at my pings
The not important ones anyway
Like server announcements and stuff
based
ah i have a few thousand hours in that game
i got it a few days ago so ive got no clue what im doing yet
1k on steam and I haven't primarily used it in years
ah nice
yeah looks like it lol
think it took me a year to get good at ksp but i was also 12
maybe 10
damm
it was a while ago
i somehow did a mun flyby a lil bit ago
