no in the north it sucks
it was like 4 degrees above the horizon when i couldnt see it anymore with the cam
on the 28th
Yeah jeez that's rough
In the south it's great
Finally, because we missed neowise lol
Yes
I saw it really well from 4:50am to 5:10am
there has been consistent debate on when the best day is
The sun rise was at 5:44pm
jfc compact mode still looks as horrendous as ever
its compact though
@lavish lark
look like that visually?
I could see about 2⁰ of the tail naked eye
i guess not
It looked exactly like this, everything cropped out was not visible naked eye
yea
Did it have good elongation when it was bright?
saw it on the 12th of july so not really
looked like this effectively
i thought it was lame at the time lol
comet was epic and will get even more epic soon
u northeres just left it to late to look should have around the 1st
This was already amazing though
I'm satisfied
i think there was like a 2 day window where it was good in the north so far lol
28th was too early and now its far too late
*or i was too far north in the first place lol
For naked eye in Australia it was a one week window I think
im gonna have to wait for mid to late october to shoot the comet, surely it will still be good
Twilight was deep when I finally got my scope out yesterday morning
The comet was low and the sky was bright (I imaged it as early as I could)
1st october was def the best time to see it here
So I just decided to video it and it turned out incredible
I think the tail should still be visible even after the 9th in the morning (for the southerners)
Here are the videos
i should have piggybacked the dslr on the roki for my widefield stuff
rip
ya just a bit lower
hell the anti tail might appear on the 14th
*in the morning sky
*for people in the south
which would be in my professional opinion, preddy cool
its sets with the sun untill the 16th
on the 16th its 2deg above the horizon so not really shootable
it was 3 degrees above the horizon when i lost it, never lose hope
wdym u lost it ?
i zoomed in and it both changed focus and moved
didnt find it again
0 bright stars near it did not help lol
strange
https://hdr-astrophotography.com/comet-tails-simulations/ using this simulation
oh yra
just matched the stars
ic
Phone pic of July 22
And a naked eye sketch of July 18
Neowise was truly wonderful if you were under dark skies
I will forever remember it
Shut up. That’s when I had clouds.
I don't think it was directed at you ?
im not sure how really accurate it will be, but it does paint a (likely somewhat accurate) picture
@bright minnow is the new comet named yet?
probs
the sungrazer? its named c/2024 s1
huh?
when thing gets close to sun thing get bright
and thing get very close to sun
but october 2024?
it got discovered close to the sun
so its not even on any planetarium app?
i cant find it on stellarium or sky portal
its on stellarium desktop if you add it
lol
for someone else
is this during day
yea (simulation)
gonna try it out
aight
1
what is this orbit lol
anti orbit
Black hole binary
And there it goes across SOHO
Where? I don't see it yet
Oh! I thought it was Venus 😅
the one on the left is, one on the right is a3
location matches
lol
There it is

guessing entirely based off "the spikes are a little shorter than mercury" id guess its like -0.4 or something
A3!!
where r u getting these images
and DAMN thats bright
dang
Cloud gods have only given me the 10th of october to see the comet again. I am eternally grateful
I'd say -1
Still well below what people were hoping
So forget about seeing this one during the day
news flash u wont see it
itll sink below the horizon as soon as the sun goes out
update
this A3 or S1?
and that white circle in the middle of the blue disk is the sun's disk right?
if so, A3 is pretty far away
ya
A3's having a rough journey so far
apparently it could rip off A3's tail ?
👀 from nambia
Really? Damn
LMAO comet having a scary journey
Please don't rip the tail
S1?
Yes
Noooooooo😭
Rip
A3 IS VISIBLE DURING THE DAY (WITH CAMERAS NOT NAKED EYE)
maybe
only 1 other person has tried so far and they have failed
im gonna try it
yeah im not seeing anything
this puts my first message into doubt
apparently so
what kind of tail ios that
Dust tail
With very complex structure
STEREO is offset from Earth
So it can see the tail in all of its glory while we are the comet's orbital plane
Hence we can't see all those striae
Yeah, I wasn't expecting it to be so chaotic
It's a pity we'll be losing all of those neat striae
what does this mean?
yeah, what happened?
its just like that,
stereo isnt near earth so it has a different view
probably a better view actually
i mean look at it lol
it broke into 3 smaller pieces
s1?
it was already on the verge of surving perihelion so imagine if it was 1/3rd the size
yea
noooo
so there wont be -7mag 🥺 ?
*maybe, mightve broken apart today and went away from each other real quick
Best case scenario would be something like this
Called a headless wonder event
Basically the 3 nuclei(or the 2 larger ones) might just survive perihelion for a bit if we are VERY lucky, and then vanish
If they last enough, the tail could still form before they disappear
are all of the nuclei the same size approximately?
Hence we would se the tail without a head
One is tiny, and two are more equal
so its like 2 70% lovejoys
*50%
Since the discovery was caused by an outburst
im just basing off the absolute magnitude, which probably isn't accurate but what else do you go off of
Idk
Just saying that it outbursted during the discovery
So it may be larger anyway, or equal or even smaller than lovejoy
Idrk
dont remember if it was you or descending that said the tail like doubled in length over a few days in response to my "it outburst and became visible" theory
Descending I think
but like thinking about that, thats kinda suspicious
because if it were always that active it shouldn't have displayed that much tail growth over just a few days
*maybe
wonder if you could project it backwards to get an approximate date of outburst
will it even survive
Being realistic: no
.
Check those few posts
But yeah, very unlikely
🫡
However, the existance of that thing could mean that larger kreutz fragments are on their way
I mean, all kreutz sprees began with small thingies, then went to the big ones and then ended with more small comets
or smaller ones
We had the late 1800s spree, the mid 1900s spree
Maybe early-mid 2000s could have a big one stored
That always
It's very common to see tiny fragments every year
Yea
Most being kreutz
(Or meyer)
Wait, does anyone know about the existance of large meyer comets?
not personally
best guess is aperson1 to know it
(at least in terms of discord servers)
Ah
cant wait for g3 to get to like -9 somehow purely out of spite for being made fun of
And obviously being southern only
and having like no elongation
That too
lmao
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1160693147521777715/1291991529879240804/tsuchinshanatlas_zoom.gif?ex=6706b9a0&is=67056820&hm=11f0b4952e2fffa52d39688477353984a7859ae06aadbd86148321cc9cad60f3& comparison between the astro vanbuitenen a3 tail simulation and the hdr astronomy one
the hdr one seems a bit less rough around the edges and provides more details
does it take the CME into account
no, but the dust doesn't get affected by cme's anyway
Only on images
Jad A3 been a mag brighter and fs it would have been seen visually
I may try shooting it with a scope or smth
Oh wait it's impossible-
Curse you, Tropical Storm Kirk
Yes
Should be about -3 now
Abd that image is from yesterday
So it should be easier today
Would I capture anything worth while if I aimed my 540mm fl Quattro at this?
I could do it next morning with a light shroud
Middle of the day
I'll do it tmr if all goes well
I'll just leave my rig running during the day, simply just not turning it off after my night time imaging session
Should work well
I'll need a long ass light shroud tho
And to leave the lens cap on as it passes by the sun
Wonder if it's bright enough to be seen through a sun filter? Maybe a weak filter ig
Certainly not
I can't see the full moon through one of those
And that's by intent
yeah no
ok new data has come in which seems to imply that the observations that claimed the comet fragmenting isnt real
which is pretty poggers if i must say so myself
#1160693147521777715 message
this is prolly a learning experience to not base a comet off of 17 pixels
so our mag -5 comet stays?
lesgoo
probably
🎉🎉🎉
it might still fall apart
it mightve fallen apart and its just kinda tricked us
i dont know
i dont trust it
but so far it seems like the 17 pixels were wrong
man, aint no one trusting comets
correct
“Comets are like cats: they have tails, and they do precisely what they want.”
― David H. Levy, Comets: Creators and Destroyers
oh yo
Yess
Imma wait a bit anyway
Just in case
Yeah people really need to check how they estimate forward scattering, it always happens lol
It happened with Leonard, and then this guy
c/2021 A1?
yea
that guy has some a cool tail tho
Yeah, scattering predictions were VERY off
Only came close because the comet happened to outburst just at the recovery
had it not outburst how faint would it have been?
ok yeah thats pretty terrible
quite lucky to have an outburst enough to make it cool but not enough to destroy the comet
*the comet did disintegrate later
lol
imagine shooting the comet disintegrating on its closest approath to earth
that's be cool af
What comet is that
But the name says that its gonna get close to the sun
C/20XX C(lose)2 (TheSun)
Ouch.
Yeah that does not look promissing
I still want to see more footage just to be sure
But yeah, let's hope for the least possible damage to the nucleus
Is this the kreutz one?
I'm afraid so

I'm still surprised honestly
Kreutz comets usually don't fragment this early
But oh well
not again
hey so you know how i said its alive
donrt think so
how r u sure its fragmented when all the stars are trailing
Full of cosmic rays
Has anyone managed to image this in the day?
I'm trying right now, no sight of anything
Some friends apparently managed to do it from Brazil today
Is this stacked?
I'm trying so do this myself
Any intel on this picture?
The image is stacked on the comet
Since it moves slowly
ohh
That is why the stars are trailing
yea L comet
he cut half the solar filter onto the sun
thats how he did it
also its not possible now cuz the comet is on the sun
Gonna try to image the comet at sunset today. Forecast tells me clouds will clear a bit at that time so there is hope
Is it far enough from the sun to be photographed at sunset?
Kinda. Like less than 10 but more than 5 degrees
It's my only day without clouds man
Yeah, I totally get you, the weather has been shitty here too, I should have a couple of clear windows next week... hopefully
I caught it very low a few days ago. Now I wanna take many photos to just reduce noise.
What are you going to use? A telephoto objective?
Will you use a tracking mount or just try short exposures?
^anybody know approx how much integration time is enough to decently make out the comet?
Short exposures on a tripod
I just wanna reduce some noise
Next week, if I have a clear night, I will try 1h with this comet.
October 15th it's right next to a globular cluster, could be a nice image for observers in the norther hemisphere
2 comets and a globular cluster
Oh what the mag of the second one?
About nine, but it's still really cool that you could potentially catch two comets in one shot.
And a globular cluster too
Yep, even a tiny smudge would be cool
I have a clear horizon 🤞
Anything at all?
about 10th mag
The sensor is detiorating, the sun is too powerful
literally
Didn't caught the comet. Got pretty wide angles of the Moon and Venus. And I think I saw a hawk hunting a rabbit.
A flew clouds got in the way at the very end. Unlucky
at 12. october its visible in the northern hemisphere in the evening (and its at its brightest then)
I will try next week a 1h 50mm fl exposure of the comet when it's higher up in the sky
but at 12th october its brightest
Damn. I got rain all week
i will image it then (if the weather allows it)
Nah, my last date with this comet will be 16 oct at least. With a classic long exposure stack.
Good luck! 👌
thanks
no????
it was brightest on the 9th (yesterday) due to forward scattering
the 12th is the first day where i would call it imagable and i guess its the brightest then
but thats not counting atmospheric extinction
itll fall under horizon really quick
highest most shootable day is 16th
uy can go 13th to 16th
should be naked eye until the 20th or so (easily naked eye, will last a few more days in b1 and your good at visual)
yea
you can image it until like november easily
yea
A3's across soho lasco C3
the 14th
actually if thats uct then the 15th would be a bit more accurate
actually technically i think the 14th is more accurate
i dunno
this comet has too much nuance and im tired
shoot and check it out
its alr transitioning to flip
u can see i tin the coorngrophg timepses
the SOHO timelapse
true
hey you know how implied it might be dying
because i have no idea anymore
god help me
s1 is really the most unpredictable guy i've seen personally
that mf got discovered just a month before its perihelion
and got predicted as a mag -8 comet
'comet of the decade'
then it looked like it split up when it actually didnt
and then it actually split up
So no -8 mag comet?
not mag -8 fosho
probably -3 in a perfect universe
maybe?
Fr
And kreutz comets are relatively well know
This one sure is an exception lol
My bet (please take it with a grain of salt) is that it only had a minor disintegration
Images do show a slightly elongated nucleus but yeah
Still very uncertain
And the center is retaining some brightness
Nothing today either, despite being bright this comet is still eluding me...
so did it survive?
yea
yea its in a few days
Ye
Eh it's fine
great to hear that
It's bright enough
ill try seeing comet on the 12th and 13th
thats a bit early, the days after are a bit better
although if its cloudy the other days
then yeah thats fine
yea but that is the only time i can see it since the other days i got school and homework
ah rip
i mean you could prolly just do the homework before going outside
it isnt too far after sunset
do the homework while outside
yea but where i live i got too many buildings covering it
have you actually checked it in stellarium lol
because its like 3 degrees above the horizon on the 12th
imma try anyway
13th?
wouldn't that go against this?
im going on seashore btw
ill try
because this is the 12th vs the 14th
damn
*these are using an outdated simulation of the comet tail
*45 degrees north is the location
ok ill try on the 14th
they took a while to make im not doing that again lol
i mean ideally you would try every day its clear until like the 20th
but thats impractical
imma go on a rooftop place then
12th is hard as shit to shoot
13th is where its at
nah the 15th is better
its clear for me
(and also its higher up so you can get more exposure on it)
actually the tail curve might be visible again after the 15th
fairly remote chance though
how
true
it (MIGHT, NOT GARUNTEED) just keep on going
becoming a very low brightness thing
during a nearly full moon
yeah im not confident many will see it
wdym
yk it wont dip that hard right
ur makin it a scene
referred to the curved tail
oh well its only from 12-13th
idc if I dont get much data I atleast want to see it
*curved tail after the 15th
ohhh
w
nah the tail will be fine
what are the brightness estimates rn
oh hell yea
for what
For Tsuchinshan Atlas
no?
it actually gets better the next few days as it rises higher
*it does get fainter but there would also be less atmospheric extinction
What's with the C/2024 S1
I heard it didn't survive the meetup with the sun
Is it true?
ahh
when should i capture that big boy
october 32nd
I will be attempting atlas tonight
I just caught a Tiangong transit!!!
Literally visible for a single frame lmao
Apparently the 533MC Pro has a very short framerate
it's too light rn
Yee
when u see venus you'll probably see the comet too
I would but honestly I don't know anything ab it
I mean lower iso and higher exposure idk
Yee that's trye
and focus it
Oh yeahhh
focus on venus so it will also be focused on comet
Alrr
js gotta be patient ig
@worthy steppe how is it going
Apparently it didn't break apart...
I haven't been this excited since comet Neowise showed up, that comet was truly spectacular, could see it from my backyard
Bro
Couldn't even see that star
I mean comet
damn
dont be
in the next days it will be better to see
like on 14th
or even later
don't lose hope cuz this is a good comet
It did go through a fragmentation it seems
i should wait until like the 20th for atlas one, fun
But images are still coming and there is a bit of everything
Ohh
Yeee
Woah
True true
oooo what comet was this
C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy)
Mag 4 by that time, and without nucleus
Late stage of the peak, a day after Christmas
oof elongated nucleus
didn't that happen to 20d/westphal before it disintegrated?
oof elongated nucleus
didn't that happen to 20d/westphal before it disintegrated?
No clue
oops ot sent twice
lemme check if the nucleus elongated
yeah it did
should I try for a3 today
if its clear
yea ofc
👍
luck has to be on my side though
short time to see it + passing rainstorms
by the time it really clears up a3 will have set long ago
at least 12p met our expectations back in March
mag 5 we expected
mag 5 we got
it it to 3.6th mag in an outburst
looked cool
AAAAAAFHSGDHFHHFHFHD A STORM CLOUD APPEARD OUTTA NOWHERE
Those distant horizon clouds are a pain
I caught the begining of the outburst funny enough lol
Lil’ bubble
could prolly derive the expansion speed with these 2 images
you won't believe this
2 giant clouds in a row
I missed the 3 minute gap between them getting my stuff ready
and gueeess when they'll move? that's right, AFTER A3 SETS
Got it
what's the best day to see the comet?
depends on stuff like horizon but the 13th-16th is about the peak
i have obstructions on the horizon so i assume later
but the only thing i have for imaging it is my pyone
ooo what focal length?
135 mm
what latitude?
37 degrees
well damn
my next chance is monday
Jesus tail is already more up than I thought
It gets really thin though
was thi when sun is setting
not worth it today but its naked eye
u can try
About an hour later
I was clouded out just when it was getting good
what day
oh 💀
Today
...I give up.
i am not going to able to see a3
by the time it clears it'll be too dim to catch
dont give up
weather is unpredictable
I have 6 clear nights out of 7 this week so comet hunting time
gonna pick out a place for rig and spray paint the floor
the uk weather is predictable enough (rain)
oh uk :(
rn im getting passing storm after passing storm
10 minutes to an hour inbetween them
bold of you to assume I can drive
no like parents
nah
damn
also im pretty sure it's ass everywhere else
oops I time traveled agaon
oh 💀
LOL
I am the traveler through time
bros a minute ahead
hows this shit possible
not 1
type in a message
go on another app for 2 - 3 mins
go back to discord, send message before others load
if enough messages were sent while u were gone then it probably works
sometimes discord loads fast
oh mine doesnt do that
mine can
and it makes for some pretty funny stuff on pc
Lol
^
correct
5000 BC? 💀
yep
bro is in the ancient egypt
very little
the comet kinda got a super budget Mcnaught tail
not naked eye though
*it was naked eye but did not have a cool tail
Yep, it does show some striae
Maybe you got haze or smth
Most people could see the tail pretty well
the fancy bits?
saw 2 degrees of the tail visually, no coma
I hope the tail will stay like this for another 7 days 🙏
looked like neowise on july 12th lol
It will definitely lengthen a lot
At least photohraphically
It will eventually lose some detail though
Don't complain, I got 0
And I'm probably missing the whole thing anyway thanks to the weather
Ah okay
Can you see the fainter regions?
There's even some antitail
It's broad and faint though
Similar to the September comet of 1882
in the photo?
Yes
didnt look for it but yeah its visible
so that implies that the bright sharp anti tail predicted isnt appearing
i mean a faint anti tail might emerge at peak
not a lick of heavy dust in that there comet
Wasn’t supposed to appear yet anyway
Wow, that comet is pretty huge if that's 75mm 😮
Any chance of seeting it from center of europe? 😄
yes
this month is perfect for seeing it
Awesome
I see it should be nicely visible a bit after sunset
only hope is there won't be clouds in the way 😄
yeah
I tried
I'm gonna try again today. May the cloud gods be merciful
Good thing is that it has been raining these days. That clears the smog no?
new image just dropped
yea this data
is bad
Better than mine 😄
what fl was this at
hmmm, im gonna try to image it in a couple of days, not sure whether to use 135mm or 50mm
i think in a few days the 50mm might be the better choice
why did bro DBE a sky image
also u cant see the tail curve
ig its way too dim
i crave detail
I crave baller
135
the tail is so dang long
you can?
barely
DAAAAAM
all I'm seeing is stratus cloud
like
a giant sheet of stratus has decided to park itself on me
tomorrow looking real fine rn tho
set to be clear
use it
this is a kinda lame image
a bit more detail at least
The camera sensor definitely needs more cleaning, nonetheless it's a great shot!
yea lol
Today was great though, much higher than I expected, gave me more time to take several hundred shots with the telephoto lens, can't wait to stack them
Can't wait for the 15th, I'll get to use the tracking mount this time
this looks good but also not
cus sky
mayb overlay each image and mask in the DBE comet
to the first one
What's this
Broooooo
It was very faint
This is what my eyes were seeing
But it's captured in dslr
Several exposures
nice!
Its just upon that building
But couldn't even see that bro
Even with long exposures
Twilight 😭😭
But I spotted it in my dslr's image
A very very very faint trail
I captured 40-60 shots of it
4 seconds each
discord ruined the quality th9
if u focused on venus it should focus on comet
Comet was invisible
can u draw where the comet is located?
It was very very faint in the shots as well
like circle it
Idk about my phone's captures
I'll share that picture with u tomorrow
ok
soho
yeah i just wanted the detail lol
yea
Eh
guys what do you think about this image? it was cloudy so this is a single sub of 40seconds bc i couldnt stack the frames
i took it with my roki 135 at f2 and the 533mc pro
it looks great
tail will get sharper soon
is that a CLOUDDDDD??
ima try tonight
oh yeah it was a little bit cloudy
but i could see it with the naked eye
it was amazing
im going to try it with my evostar 72 ed next few days to get that detail in the tail
oh damn best ive seen so far
faint heavy dust tail in the anti tail
and tuesday im going to try and image it with the 13p olber comet and M5
thank you !!
its so cool
was it taken now or yesterday?
today
like a few hours ago
it was pretty high in the sky but there was still a little bit of light from the sunset
tuesday its going to be a super cool event
and its clearrrr
i am experiencing comet withdrawal synptoma
(this is 12p from March 30)
-# the faint smudge in the center
antitail!!!
Best one after peak I've seen so far
You can hint the stronger region of the antitail
And the larger faint one
Very very reminiscent of the comet of 1882
And it is a single sub this is amazing
Stay tuned for Tuesday
It will be fantastic
I’m enjoying the roki 135 too much
my faith in you was well placed lol
dude that tail was so bright naked eye I was jumping everywhere
my neighbor came out
real lmfao
Might have a go today
dropping this here
rippppppppp

hopefully circumstances improve in a few years and you can pick it back up
maybe
*by few years i mean like 20
lol
@lavish lark anti tail ?
Let me drop this here as well
What's the current magnitude of a3
guessing 0-1
I mean i have it here
Its just
Bad
And no i couldn't see it visually
Even from my current bortle 4 place
Any ways to improve?
Im relatively new to comet shooting
C/2020 V2 (ZTF), located 5.7 AU from the sun, beyond the orbit of Jupiter. Magnitude 15.1, shot on the 9th of October.
is this it?
Yeah
damm gj
that s actually what i saw the first time i went outside
one feet inside one on the window holding the camera tripod to not fall from the 2nd story
Are yall stacking your shots or is it single sub shots?
Stacking
I believe so
That's not possible wtf
Let your eyes adjust to the deck
Dark
Oof 💀😔
Last Saturday
It was actually more contrasted naked eye when it wasn't behind the clouds
single
woow
3rd floor apartment
They were pretty well adjusted
Imma try tomm again if clear
I give up
I'm.not gonna be able to see a3
clouded out today
raining tomorrow n wed
probably gonna be clouded out thu
After that, rain until the end of the month
We have naked eye time till 20
Dont loose hope
every forecast I can check says rain until the end of the month
radar maps n all support thar
L forecast
the forecast is a lot more accurate with rain n clouds than with clear
But it aint much in the image too
Well
Good luck on the next ones then
ikr
aint s1 and g3 both sungrazers
that both also get at horrible angles to see from the uk
After that ig it's 19P/Borrelly
but that ain't for 2 years
Yeah maybe
and I'm pretty sure they both get bright at weird angles for the UK
so I cant see them (assuming it's clear, highly unlikely)
Try getting close to the equator when they come
I live 53N
equator my ass
and they're both during school times anyways
i love comets like the atlas at 58N
you can see it?
same
though looks like I'll be waiting a lot longer than you
technically could get a pic of it but its so low that it just isnt worth it
I did my first observation of the comet rn
im further north so i should have to wait longer
A tiny, saggy star-like, almost undiscernible nucleus thingy that may have even been my imagination lol
LP and cirrus must have done a lot lol
I live in the UK, need i say more
ah, clouds ☠️
woah
