#Comets
1 messages · Page 2 of 1
ah that's plenty for my one inch of ap and 180mm of fl
So, the coma is 20 arcseconds across and the tail about one arcminute
Meanwhile, comet 154P/Brewington is just a streak
http://www.astrostudio.at/2_Bright Comets.php?img=images/2_Bright Comets/811_2023A3_30_07_24.jpg a3 is actually having an active gas tail
Yeap, there is a faint ion tail
Does anyone know a bright comet on the north empishere?
13p olbers is 7-8th magnitude right now, in october c/2023 a3 will be a 1-3rd mag object the 12th-20th (predictions are hard)
they should both be in stellarium (and if your using desktop and its not you can add it)
Thanks
How bright will it get
on the 9th it may reach like -3 or brighter but it will also have 3 degrees of elongation, on the days after its like 1-3rd mag for the 11th-15th
(open in browser for high quality)
Interesting
It seems to be overperforming again though
People are calculating it is surpassing the mag 7 threshold from the stereo footage
zamn
i wonder if a3 wont be as reported in the news as neowise, leonard ect because its name isn't catchy
i find it funny how c/2024 g3 has gotten only 1 news article
It does have horrible visibility conditions
can you cook over here @lavish lark so it doesnt get lost to gen chat
comet
indeed
so what i can do is choose 3 comets, make magnitudue graph for each one, image comet like 5 days later and see if it follows my predictions
also, could using the brightness and stuff give me other info? like could i try getting distance possibly? @lavish lark
yea that would work
yipee
how are you going to calculate the mag tho
the math is like 4.00 + 5 log[∆] + 12.50 log[r]
could i use a reference star?
ooh
idk i got the same question
ah lol
yea
you could use a reference star
unfortunately i am building a bed so i cant be much help lol
worst possible time lol
oh lol okay
if you crave more information about comets (in like 3 hours and later) you can just ping me
i know too much about comets
yipee thank you
actually what even led to the interest in comets in the first place lol
science project due nov 20 lol
lol
an i want to do something related to space but since comets arent an all night thing, i can use scope for astrophotography and project
oh yipee
same thing
would i just get like 20 mins of data for like a week and use brightness trends to makea chart?
yea probably
Yay. Now I just need clear nights. Any comets rn?
http://astro.vanbuitenen.nl/comets right now 13p olbers is the best one
Ooh thanks
a3 is at 0.7 au from the sun
Ooh that's close. How do we know that
math, i just checked what stellarium says for the distance to the sun
Ah okay nice
a3 is 0.58 au from the sun
i put it at 5th mag or so but it has 13 degrees of elongation
Okey
c/2024 l4 when (idek where I found anything abt it all I know it exists)
wait no it was l3
nope it's l5
i want @river patio dead
Then you want me dead too
Cuz i aint imaging comets
Its too complicated
im dumb as shit and understand it
yea
Okey
I won't be able of 💔
instant death
cant realy
in australia is gonna be very tricky to catch it
The comet has been recovered
Report of mag 5.5 by Terry lovejoy
It's probably still be below the actual brightness due to the altitude
So it's probably around 5th magnitude by now.
the uk weather system:
yeah :(
Another observation today
Nuclear condensation is ridiculously high
Mag 4 estimation, on very small region, may I add
I'd say comet is mag 4.5-5 rn
They used a massive 16" (probably an SCT) scope for this one so I suppose it is more trustworthy
messed up that theres only 14 days until a3 perhelion
Is the comet visible during daytime too? Since when it’s dark it’s not visible for me
not right now, maybe on october 9th though
maybe
Im talking about the 12th October
It’s supposed to be -3 mag for me on the 12th October
what source is that?
Starwalk
not accurate sadly

thats not good news lol
I know
cowmet
a3 is 0.5 au from the sun
yooo (heartlessly stolen from a different astro server
they are on comet dust
I think they just want hale bopp/ the Japanese 1964 one that i forgot the name to happen again
iyeka seki?
Senpai
yea that one
also it turns out the reason was because the guy misread it lol
hwar
Jesus Christ
Lowkey looks exactly like 2011 L4
Very impressive footage
Probably around the mag 4 threshold rn
double tail?
Yes, you can see two dust tails, a bright, straight one of lighter dust and a fainter, curvier one of heavier dust
You should
Best one since neowise most probably
Even since mcnaught if things go accordingly
C/2023 A3 is only at the end of October/start of November visible for me when it’s dark
ripp
for me from about 15 Oct onwards
For me it’s 19th of august 2025
Pretty much at optimal latitude here
If weather allows ir I will be able to get some early glimpses
?
It will be visible for me then
That's uh
Very late
It will just be a faint telescopic comet by then
What's your latitude
69
North or South?
Oh
Yeah the comet won't be visible there
Really sucks for ya

Okay jokes aside it should be visible pretty much anywhere from Oct 13 onwards
ok imma go to the south pole to see it then, thanks!
it's gonna be polar day by then
cance*
bruh
chance
lmfao
2nd october is rough
Try a few days before
Yessir
beautiful
anyone's knows if 2024 PT⁵ will be visible?
and if so, how can I find it,
?
Yeah, more Gerald rhemann stuff
I mean ir will be pretty close
@lavish lark any comet up rn that I can image? Got clear skies tonight
13p olbers should still be visible quite low in the somewhat south, like 9th mag or so
c/2023 a3 should be low in the southeast horizon during dawn by the end of the week
(by low i mean like 5 degrees, maximum)
Ah okay thanks I'll try to cook
As sun sets?
you actually have a far better c/2023 a3 morning passage than me, 6 whole degrees above the horizon with the sun at -11 degrees instead of my 2
Ooh
I can try getting data on it, then imaging something for the night
*this is on the 27th
Ohh okay lol
YOO
south
Ah, well
Any focal works
Depends on how you want your image to look like
If you want to do landscape I'd reccomend a lens between 35 and 85mm
If you want to capture the comet only, go higher
200mm at least
Ok I’ll probs do 300
oh its looking good
that dust tail is forming nicely
Yeah
The one it had before august is quite faint now
And it will probably dim more and more
Simce it's heavy dust from the surface
presuming you took several?
yeah
was slightly worried you only had the one lol
lol
Ohh sweet
not naked eye visable from my location tho
10"
what timezone?
Australian eastern standard time
How much brighter will C/2023 A3 get?
if you count october 9th, 7.5 magnitudes brighter
*3 degrees from the sun on the 9th
In just praying for clear nights
real
Istg ill just buy time on a remote telescope if not lol
Or go up a mountain/drive inland
I'm not missing this
Especially in October
I've seen 3 comets so far
ZTF, Pons Brook and C/2023 A3
I saw A3 back in May though, when it was mag 10
damn I've only seen 12p
morning passage what's thar
if you count both photgraphy and visual ive seen 8
neowise, c/2023 h2, 12p, 62p, 144p, c/2021 s3, 13p, c/2023 a3
I've seen none thus far 💀
skill issue fr
Just aim your scope at the dim ones fr
There are something like 5 mag 10 to 13 comets at any given time
well that'll be just a dot doe
Not always
huh?
I've yet to image the dim ones, hence I've only imaged 3 comets
The mag 11 and 12 ones sometimes have small tails
huh, then I defo gotta look into those
Yeah
how high up are they? the brighter ones tend to be quite low, and unfortunately the horizon at my telescoping spot is not the greatest due to trees
They're usually out at 2 au from the sun
All over the place, sometimes at Zenith
They're past mars
So they can be anywhere
that's great, defo looking into that whenever I get the opportunity :p thanks!
2025 is actually somewhat low in terms of bright comets
https://www.aerith.net/comet/future-n.html large portion of the year theres no comets below mag 13
how much focal length do you have?
oh your fine
i resolved a 12th mag comet with 180mm of fl
i mean it was small
but it was there
yeh, gonna be like this once I get that 585, should be neat :p about as far as my scope can go really in terms of pixel per fov any further and I'd start oversampling
I've seen 5
Neowise, Leonard, C/2017 K2, ZTF and Nishimura
I've seen 3
Pons Brooks ZTF and that other one
Olbers
#1230216213901082744 message
Is there any comet which isn’t near the horizon and is currently ok or good visible?
theres a few ok faint ones
*open in browser
https://hdr-astrophotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/output2023a3_closeup.gif?w=600 the old one for comtext
hell yeah
I should be able to get c/2023a3 Thursday/friday and Sunday
Sunday should be almost st it’s brightest roughly
that looks really good
COMETT
i did not make it
wdym
i thought you thought i made it lol
oh 💀
Wow
Woaaaahhh
Can someone link a good tutorial for comet astrophotography? Or is it like regular planetary/DSO? I don't have a clue
its about the same in terms of acquisition to like a galaxy, only difference is that you have to use the comet mode in your stacking program of choice (dss is easiest)
*unless its a bright naked eye comet (like c/2023 a3) in which it is widefield
A balaxu? You mean a galaxy?
galaxy*
i should really check what i say before sending it
All good, thx bob
comet's gonna pass soho spacecraft
what camera
585
for several days most likely
for 3 days
and it still fit ur framing??
I was worreid the entire comet wouldnt fit my roki 135 and 533
Ya
oh im chilling then
do you think 1 minute subs are ideal for the comet
since its moving fast
1 min is almost to long cuz it will clip it white
not really
The comet is moving towards us Rn so no motion relative to us
yea but during the 13th
I tried last night this comet is very bright
Istg it better rotate and reveal the ion tail cuz it's annoying that it'd hiding it :/
im gon shoot 13th cuz thats when the comet's tail is curved
LEGIT
we get antitail but still
I might check out that date
Ya
Roughly looked like this in the dob eyepiece
Bit dimmer and comet nucleus was alot smaller
Picture with my phone of the screen cuz I got no internet
ohh
Got my internet back, here are the better ones on my computer
6 HOURS UNTIL A3 PERIHELION (or maybe 7 hours)
yea, it actually continues to brighten until then
i could shoot it again tonight but i cant really be bothered
lol
meh i might try on Monday
@lavish lark can you use nina to track the comet?
probably? i dunno i dont use it
right now its not moving very fast though
NINA has some plugins for asteroids; maybe it works for comets. But PHD2 has a tool for guiding on comets...
you have to be PA'd before using it right
thx
(stolen heartlessly from a different discord) official CBAT (Central Bureau of Astronomical Telegrams) estimate of C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) magnitudes as it reaches perihelion and experiences forward scattering:
(Forward scattering is a phenomenon that exists when a dusty object is between us and the Sun - so the intensity of it is directly correlated to how close C/2023 A3 is to the sun.
October 5: magnitude 0.0 (15 degrees from the sun)
October 6: magnitude -1.0 (13 degrees) (peak magnitude of comet Hale-Bopp at a high solar elongation)
October 7: magnitude -2.0 (10) (peak magnitude of comet ISON)
October 8: magnitude -3.0 (6.6)
October 9.4: magnitude -4.0 (3.5) (peak magnitude of comet McNaught in 2006 in the far south was -6)
October 10: magnitude -3.0 (4.3)
October 11: magnitude -2.0 (7.9)
October 12: magnitude -1.0 (12)
October 13: magnitude 0.0 (17)
The comet will experience forward scattering between September 29 and October 21, although the intensity of this will only brighten the comet by >1 magnitude between October 2 and 16.
istg if it clouds up for two weeks in October
I might shoot a3 this morning
How good will it be visible at 47 degrees Latitude?
Wasn't able 😭
New comet discovered by atlas
Gonnw be a very very sun grazer and likely mag -5 /-10 at the least, perihelion is on the 28th October
But basically on the sun
iyeka seki part 2 real
damn
I knew there is a group of comets from ikeya seki but I didn't know I'd guess it was one 😭
(istg if its cloudy then too)
btw what's its name
like what did atlas name it
if they've named it yet
dont think they have yet
oh ok
gonna keep up on this comet as well as a3
i already posted it
Great comet
?
hopefully
Hopefully is visible from the southern hemisphere
2023A3 isn’t the best comet for southern hemisphere
its better for us before perihelion but north gets it better after perihelion
80% of the images that exist of A3 rn are from australia iirc
lol
I’m just waiting for another lovejoy
deets about it
C/2023 A3 this morning at around 5am aest
-4??
you know how dust in a window gets brighter?
the same thing happens
yea
w
Sadly tonight’s probably the last night I can shoot A3
rip
As it becomes a northern hemisphere target
it should be about as high though
October 9th
well yeah but after the 9th is when its visible in the evening
i mean 4th mag at 6 degrees above the horizon (random point in aus on the 18th) isnt particularly amazing but it is most certainly possible
*astrodark
This was my shot tonight
WHAT
DAMN that is a long tail
12 and 15th for me
14th or 15th is when I'll start taking pictures probably
I'll try to shoot it next morning, today was a big fail
There were clouds and the sun was already almost out
am or pm?
That seems way way higher then when I got it only 3 days ago
Can’t shoot it in pm atm so def am
yea its about the highest it gets for the southerners
My bad
C/2023 A3 with sunrise ☄️
So it gets that high even tho in stellarium it shows that its not going to be very high?
I love how almost everyone is ignoring this lol
That is nuts
Hopefully we get a nasty bright comet
Focal length and cropping should have affected the way we comprehend it's height
here's the raw file at 28mm (fullframe)
Now it makes sense
I was also looking back on my ztf and Mars data lmao
When I was even worse at processing somehow
that image was my first ever astophoto
like ever
Okay so people are starting to confirm that it's a Kreutz comet
This may turn into an absolute frenzy of hype in the next few days
c/2024 g3 cant get a single win 😭😭
Guys a new comet just dropped
https://groups.io/g/comets-ml/message/32622
yes
it was discovered last night
do i understsand it right?
it will be closest to the sun at Oct 28
and was the furthest at Sep 28
a3 from an hour and 40 minutes ago
thats pretty soon
didnt we have to wait like 5 months for A3
30 days is crazy
Tho considering it’s gonna be in October I’ll get like 2 clear nights cuz of storms
im just gonna pray
woah thats gonna get close to the sun
jeezus
no way in hell thats surviving
the 0.005 AU? im tring to figure out how to decode the orbit spec
if it fragments which it probably will then that'll be fun watching each fragment
It's a kreutz sungrazer after all, if comets are a wheel of fortune, kreutz comets are that but 10 fold
Most do survive the perihelion and have partial disintegrations afterwards
Even ikeya seki split right before perihelion and still gave quite the show
I'll just hope for a partial disintegration at most
i can't wait for the weather to completly fuc this up for me
what would that even look like
maybe a bunch of comets similar brightness to pons Brooks back in March, but in a stream going up from virgo to ophiucus?
About a year
I heard about it like may 2023
It’s crazy that this new comet that was discovered yesterday will be at perihelion in like 30 days
And gonna be possibly brighter then 2023 A3
i eat comets
real
Here is the kreutz in color
Michael Jager says mag 11.5
Compare it to Lovejoy from 2011
Woah, is the A3 visible for the naked eye yet?
Absolutely
Was just shooting it
Super naked eye visible lmao
awesome
gotta pray the weather is in our favour
oh man i love this one
oooo what bortle
i actually love the composition of that
4 although it shouldn’t matter to much
Due to the sunrise
and integration time? :oooo
looks sick btw
Single 30 second sub
!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my 4 minute stack
is this zoomed in or is this true scale?
True scale:)
i thought it was a tiny little dot lol
what FL?
135mm
omg this actually might be doable for me
This one is 55mm
wait so did u shoot widefield or with a scope?
Wide field. Just me and my trusty lens
55-250 kit
damn thats insane, i didnt realize it would appear that big in the sky in a widefield
I measured around 5-7 degrees
im screwd my phone shoots 87 degrees
In the span of 1 day. It’s brightened a whole bunch
As I was also shooting yesterday morning
Comparison
Same fl
wow
when will it get too close to the sun?
or better to ask when is the best period to shoot it
like what day, in your opinion
stellarium shows it slowly fading away around 16th october?
The best time to shoot depends highly on location
Correct. Keep in mind Stellarium sucks at comet magnitudes. It’s usually quite off with its predictions
i better hope so 🙏
I live in the south so you will have to do your own research
oh ok
It is dimming tho. It got that part correct
ah shoot
Don’t worry tho. A new comet was discovered yesterday It’s predicted to outshine this one by a whole lot
It’s a little too early to tell for sure tho
:ooo
Currently it’s being compared to comet lovejoy from 2011
(Lovejoy for reference)
so pretty
Keep in mind it’s still much to early to know anything with certainty so take everything I say with a grain of salt
we just need 2 weeks and trus in forward scatering to give us the brightest comet
if comet melts im blowin up the sun
vaporise the sun (the planets are cooked
)
Btw tmr marks the 1 year anniversary of me starting astrophotography!
SOHO space craft better get a good image of the comet
ayyyy w
for me its 3rd year
approaching fourth year
in 2 weeks
1 year progress
or we could manipulate the comets orbit to send it towards earth so we can get a nice close up view of the comet :)
bro r u tryna get us destroyed 💀
one of mine as well :p
im so curious how you do moons like this
nwerd wroerty
i can never get the shadow side to show any detail even with overexposure and long exposures
ahem.. mininerd worthy
i wish 😭
regular moon stack and brightened up moon
and then alignning
shit my bad I forfgot about
MININERD
secret is to get a full moon shot adn then underexposure it in photoshop
mininerd > nerd
this was my best one
lowkey looks like a drawing
background is my nikon d7000 and moon is from seestar s50 from someone else
yea lmao
omg i should def try getting more moon/cloud shots
weather is cloudy when i dont need it to be and vice versa 😩
its kinda painful
yea
yea uhhh we dont worry about that
im worried about it it hurts me physically
and mostly mentally but yknow

who is this a picture of i really wanna know lol
Right now
Yep a kreutz comet
It actually seems to be rather large compared to lovejoy
No as big as ikeya but yea
Actually I'd say it will be more like ikeya than lovejoy
Just fainter
the comets Ion tail is getting brighter
so sad, it actually has gas in it
we lost a real one (the concept of c/2023 a3 having only dust) today
Why would it be better if there were no gas?
Whats the name?
name is not public
its going to be called "C/2024 S1 (ATLAS)"
if you look it up now, it wont come up with anything since its not yet public
ok, but I got hurricane asley rn, so ....
another atlas comet dang
and its an election year which adds onto the craziness lol
Yea lol
a3 has broken the 2nd mag barrier*
*approximately
*if it hasn't yet it will in like 12 hours
have you seen PANSTARRS?
yes no
hm
honestly im not 100% sure i believe it
hm the ion tail is getting significantly brighter maybe it is real
Is this your image?
its from facebook
I am from Mars
SCNR'd
lmafo
altitude graph for a3, very useful
Can i shoot this current commet at b9?
should be possible but faint and low
at 17th itll look crazy with just tail and anti
star walk 2 shows the comet as small on my screen 💀
should be 2.5th mag or so by then
Imma wait for mid october to image it, too low for me
wait for 17th
the 17th has a nearly full moon though
are those all sattelites
ur all the way on the other side of the sky
it would still affect things?
whats that
I process out the moon's effects

what about visual
I aint a comet visual kid
*and it adds more noise
fine ill do 16th ig 💀
There‘s actually this really cool software which can do that, it’s only 500$ too
I dont need to worry about noise
lame, become one
my sensor is extremely sensitive + f/3
only if I can see it
it would be 2.5th mag or so, so should be easy unless your in like b9
0-0.5
oh easy to spot
the gif of not quite infinite but very large amounts of knowledge is very useful
That tail is insane
It clearly extends outside this frame
On the right
the tail simulation isnt far off even
Its dim but the tail extends so far
I have a whole other panel taken up by the tail that I gotta process

what other comets there will be in the next 100 years (I'll miss this one fs)
a lot dont worry
if you average it out there's a pretty cool one every few years
*dont know the actual statistic off the top of my head
Is this symbolizing you downloading the image
also the newly discovered one is gonna put on quite a show if it works out as predicted, it's due in about a month
damn so many comets
do you know it's name?
well i had it somewere give me a min
c/2024 s1
thanks
Hopefully with s1 getting confirmed we get a better idea of how bright it is right now
estimate range from mag 11 or so to mag 16 or so
well stellarium is not seeing it
im talking about A11bP71
unless it's the same one
same one, it got confirmed
what version?
ooh ik ab that, I've seen an insta post
idk, the regular phone stellarium
ah it just hasn't been updated yet
should happen in a few days
usually there is more stuff on PC
maybe a week at most
ok great
you have to add it
oh
*in the desktop version
bruh why do all comets got to be where the sun rises
there are some tall buildings right there
shouldve imaged it a couple months ago when it was in virgo
get on top of the tall buildings i guess
firstly I will have to pray to not get caught by police or homeless people
enjoy the pain
Get out of any light pollution, as much as possible
Idk why ppl try to see comets from cities
I only saw neowise from a bortle 2 and visual almost matched images
(Except for the gas tail)
in europe it's not that easy to get out of light pollution, best skies are usually ~2h away and they end in B5 sometimes B4 and that's looking strait up, close to horisont the sky is lit up anyway.
and the atlas comet is so close to the sun the Brotle class doesn't matter much
it will matter in 2 weeks when the comet will be setting a bit AFTER the sun sothe sky will actually have a chance to get dark enough bor the sky class to matter
1h b3 for me
it does matter after like the 13th though
because by the 14th its more than 5 degrees above the horizon after astrodark
Any ammount counts, trust me
Yea
Specially when the moon goes away
yeah the 20th in a b1 would probably be a stunning sight
*for like 20 minutes until the moon rises
well the moon is gonna be there at the same time as the comet but on the oposite part of the sky so not super terrible
Yea
Can confirm
On July 17th I could only see neowise as a small thingy from a bortle 5-6 village
But a day later feom the bortke 2, the view was breathtaking
saw it on the 12th, it kinda sucked lol
on the 13th the separation between sun and comet is 2h, sun sets and the comet sets 2h after it
It did suck in the morning
Like early july
But mid-late july from dark skies was just sublime
Something I always dreamed of
god damnt, i was suppose to study for the exam tomorrow not plan my next astrophotography trip
sowwy :((
i love and hate this hobby at the same time
(you can do it after the exam, you have until like the 9th to have plans being prepared)
it's not your falt
lol
i know but im exited now
Fair
the 12th and 14th are also looking pretty good i think
the 12th would have similar viewing to neowise when i saw it and be 2 mags brighter (approximately)
and thats preddy cool
to bad that weather will mess with us
14-16th is probably what il steer normal people to see though
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE
YOU JINXED IT
THE ENTIRE WORLD WILL BE CLOUDY
Eh fair
actually i guess jinxing it would mean the entire world would be clear
But 14th will have it at mag 0.5-1 under good conditions
im looking at windy and it's not looking great
yeah thats probably the more impressive sight
that's as bright as mars, that's incredible
yeah but the nearly full moon
For me, a faint, large comet is better than a small, bright one
it would be in the opposite side of the sky but still
Other side of the sky
i dont think the difference is as large as you think it is between skies
*i have not checked
the y axis is magnitude?
Yes
it's all over the place, why would it be so unstable? is it just mesurment error or could it be an indication of it revolving or something
it's too random to be coused from a revolwing motion, maybe it's just bracking apart and burtsts of dust make it brighter
oh
And it's foing back into the sun's glare
So meassurements tend to be uncertain
Most are visually comparing the head with Regulus, though
So that is mag 1.5
Kind of
siril refuses to open it lmao
not sure if i 100% like it or not yet, Ion was faintly in the data but i used gimp to stretch that part of the image more but ik it does look a bit tacky
think ill leave it there anyway
is comet A3 naked eye?
planning on going out in the morning to see it
ive heard reports the tail is...i dont my mother is and she is interested
dev version might be more forgiving
roughly looks like this from where i was
Which one ?
Is it naked eye visible even during sunrise??
the one you posted above
Dammit, comet isn't high enough in the sky for me before sun rises 😩
like 4:50am on the 1st October
alright thanks
same, it rises at such a shallow angle to the sun for me rn
???
It's close to the sun now
that's G3 not A3
I was just scrolling through atellarium mobile bc boredom and wanting to see funni cometa from b7 (seen pons brooks)
Ohh
Well that's a new comet that got discovered last week
I need to find the orbit of this
not like I can see it anyways
After perihelion it stays at a weird angle to the sun
idk I'm going off this (stellarium)
this is just two days after the first ss
3 days*
Just learned that this is a summer comet
I mean Southern hemisphere
bs 💀💀💀
that explains why my 53N ahh can't see it
Now I'll screw up the comet's orbit and make it hit us
I'm at 37N lol
wahoo
woohoo
virgo sets horizontal for me 😭
any evening object in virgo from July to like December is a nogo for me
Is this current comet good for you
g3 sucks anyways lol
actively seeks out the sun
If this comet gets a negative mag I'ma punch you
Real
it is never brighter than 10th mag when above 25 degrees of elongation
Bruh 💀
dont worry it will (probably) fall apart beforehand
Good
if it does survive it still sucks lol
Yea
G3 will be a great comet only for SOHO at most
People should really focus on S1
It's a frickin' Kreutz, ffs
Not common to find a large one at all
Even larger than Lovejoy
*unless its just had an outburst and isn't actually all that bright
*even then its still cool
*and better than g3
All kreutzs are cool lol
And this one seems like it is steadily developing
For one, the tail has doubled in size
And second, brightness estimates are slowly comong together
What’s c/2024 g3 ?
14-15thth mag or so sunskirter (not a sungrazer)
it kinda sucks in every way
that one might be? maybe??
*with telscopes
still counts
I will try to see it on 11th october. Maybe it's still bright
messed up how theres only 5 days until October 9th
whats happening october 9th
a3 gets really close to the sun and forward scattering makes it -4th mag or so
you sure it's -4
added the "or so" since it might get only to like mag -3.5 on pessimistic predictions or like mag -4.5 on the most optimistic.
im guessing mag -4 max but i cant really say anything more than that
Well look at the data chart lol
Max will be at least -2 or -1
i have been
no way it's going up to -4
Nah this shit is exciting
I'ma start practicing my framing 4 days in advance
http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/iau/cbet/005400/CBET005404.txt has it going to -4 lol
*i am scared of data like that
Are they plotting the data every damn day
no but its predictions have help up so far
of
the blue is plotted data
yep
the graph and the link are different with entirely seperate predictions
thats a long tail
a3 is displaying a new feature, i dont trust it
wdym dont trust it ?
its new and weird
didnt appear in an image (posted on astrobin) 2 days ago https://app.astrobin.com/search?p=eJy7GVeSWlFiq2rupGpkVJaYU5oKpFWNHYFksqqRm5GBkbGqkUGiMUjUyBlI5iaWJGeEVBYg1Dn6%2BIDY5i5qBYnpqbaGYCo4swrINDAAABMTGnA%3D&i=ewbvsh
hm
Idk i think that its not going to survive when it goes close to the sun but we will se
it is already past perihelion
that was on the 27th
Bruh i thought thats on the 12th
thats closest approach to earth
this comet has too much damn nuance
This comet is overhyped tbh
Barely saw it with my naked eye
Really low to the horizon
thats because the morning approach is bad for people in the northern hem
(at least in terms of altitude)
the evening approach(october 12th-30th) is far better
(the "news" articles calling it a great comet are wrong though)
decent
Maybe great for the south but that's about it
People could see 25degs of tail during these days
i dont think it qualifies though due to being visible like a week
yea ig
and most of that week sucked
after it comes to earth its the northern hemisphere's comet
Ruined by the moon
By the time it goes past full moon the comet will be mag 3.5
So yeah
South almost got to great comet status thanks to tail length, but here the moon is ruining it all
I think I caught it this morning without knowing. It wasn't visible to the eye and I didn't have binos. Is it that spot on the lower left?
40N lat ass photo
Wrong
u guys just gotta wait a bit longer till mid October then it will be so much better
Moon will ruin it all
At least visually
That's definitely it
It appears over STEREO too btw
May just be into the negatives unlike some say
Definitely around mag 0 at the very least
This has been the best comet I've seen in my entire life
Looks very nice
Not close to topping my account with neowise though
Hopefully that changes soon
I like how condensed the nucleus is though
yep thats it
What latitude?
Lowest I've ever astrophotographed
the music caught me ff guard
comet coming wee
thankfully it gets much higher after october 9th
yea
Clouds are gonna mess my week. I think my only options to see and image will be 11th to 13th
rip
in the 11th it would be much lower in the west after sunset but 2 mags brighter, the 13th is likely the better option
🤓 perihelion was the 27th, your missing the closest approach
Oh yea I got them mixed, mb
oh no
nah its fine lol
(Meteoblue)
oh this is a bit more optomistic
Yeah that other app shows rain everyday for me lol
oh lol
i can mostly only wait until until its 2 days before because then zoom.earth has a (so far quite accurate) prediction of what the weather will be
yea
im gonna lose my shit if this october weather pulls a "3 week long cloudy" joke and i miss yet another comet opportunity 😭
no
Oh Ic
another one of my world famous "moshing together that tail simulation and stellarium"
