May I add that it is a tiny comet. This is a 100% cut out, the comet is less than half arcminute across.

(stolen heartlessly from a different discord) official CBAT (Central Bureau of Astronomical Telegrams) estimate of C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) magnitudes as it reaches perihelion and experiences forward scattering:

(Forward scattering is a phenomenon that exists when a dusty object is between us and the Sun - so the intensity of it is directly correlated to how close C/2023 A3 is to the sun.

October 5: magnitude 0.0 (15 degrees from the sun)
October 6: magnitude -1.0 (13 degrees) (peak magnitude of comet Hale-Bopp at a high solar elongation)
October 7: magnitude -2.0 (10) (peak magnitude of comet ISON)
October 8: magnitude -3.0 (6.6)
October 9.4: magnitude -4.0 (3.5) (peak magnitude of comet McNaught in 2006 in the far south was -6)
October 10: magnitude -3.0 (4.3)
October 11: magnitude -2.0 (7.9)
October 12: magnitude -1.0 (12)
October 13: magnitude 0.0 (17)

The comet will experience forward scattering between September 29 and October 21, although the intensity of this will only brighten the comet by >1 magnitude between October 2 and 16.

little moon
#

Idk why ppl try to see comets from cities

#

I only saw neowise from a bortle 2 and visual almost matched images

#

(Except for the gas tail)

proud dew
#

and the atlas comet is so close to the sun the Brotle class doesn't matter much

#

it will matter in 2 weeks when the comet will be setting a bit AFTER the sun sothe sky will actually have a chance to get dark enough bor the sky class to matter

lavish lark
#

because by the 14th its more than 5 degrees above the horizon after astrodark

little moon
#

Specially when the moon goes away

lavish lark
#

yeah the 20th in a b1 would probably be a stunning sight

#

*for like 20 minutes until the moon rises

proud dew
little moon
#

Yea

little moon
#

On July 17th I could only see neowise as a small thingy from a bortle 5-6 village

#

But a day later feom the bortke 2, the view was breathtaking

lavish lark
proud dew
#

on the 13th the separation between sun and comet is 2h, sun sets and the comet sets 2h after it

little moon
#

Like early july

#

But mid-late july from dark skies was just sublime

#

Something I always dreamed of

proud dew
#

god damnt, i was suppose to study for the exam tomorrow not plan my next astrophotography trip

proud dew
#

i love and hate this hobby at the same time

lol

little moon
#

Fair

lavish lark
#

the 12th and 14th are also looking pretty good i think

little moon
#

Do you have any chance with the sungrazer?

#

I'd say 14th onwards

lavish lark
#

and thats preddy cool

proud dew
#

to bad that weather will mess with us

lavish lark
#

14-16th is probably what il steer normal people to see though

lavish lark
#

YOU JINXED IT

#

THE ENTIRE WORLD WILL BE CLOUDY

lavish lark
#

actually i guess jinxing it would mean the entire world would be clear

little moon
#

But 14th will have it at mag 0.5-1 under good conditions

proud dew
#

im looking at windy and it's not looking great

lavish lark
proud dew
little moon
#

I still think the best will be on the 16th

#

Mag 2, and a long tail

lavish lark
little moon
#

For me, a faint, large comet is better than a small, bright one

lavish lark
#

it would be in the opposite side of the sky but still

little moon
lavish lark
#

*i have not checked

little moon
#

It is also an issue on the 14th anyway

#

Forward scattering is going as expected

proud dew
little moon
#

Yes

proud dew
#

it's all over the place, why would it be so unstable? is it just mesurment error or could it be an indication of it revolving or something

little moon
#

Meassurement errors

#

The comet has become very large

proud dew
#

it's too random to be coused from a revolwing motion, maybe it's just bracking apart and burtsts of dust make it brighter

proud dew
little moon
#

And it's foing back into the sun's glare

#

So meassurements tend to be uncertain

#

Most are visually comparing the head with Regulus, though

#

So that is mag 1.5

proud dew
#

how does one mesure magnitude of an objet

#

just snap a photo and comapre to others?

lavish lark

if it does survive it still sucks lol

little moon
#

Yea

#

G3 will be a great comet only for SOHO at most

#

People should really focus on S1

#

It's a frickin' Kreutz, ffs

#

Not common to find a large one at all

#

Even larger than Lovejoy

lavish lark
#

*unless its just had an outburst and isn't actually all that bright

#

*even then its still cool

*and better than g3

And this one seems like it is steadily developing

Really low to the horizon

lavish lark

(at least in terms of altitude)

lavish lark
#

(the "news" articles calling it a great comet are wrong though)

little moon
#

Yea

#

More like a good comet rather than great

lavish lark
#

decent

little moon
#

Maybe great for the south but that's about it

#

People could see 25degs of tail during these days

lavish lark
little moon
#

I mean

#

Don't kreutz comets kinda do that too

lavish lark
#

yea ig

lavish lark
compact bronze
#

after it comes to earth its the northern hemisphere's comet

little moon
#

Ruined by the moon

#

By the time it goes past full moon the comet will be mag 3.5

#

So yeah

#

South almost got to great comet status thanks to tail length, but here the moon is ruining it all

I think I caught it this morning without knowing. It wasn't visible to the eye and I didn't have binos. Is it that spot on the lower left?
