Hi there, first post.

I’ve noticed that literally everyone seems to use canon when shooting with DSLR. Is that just because they are good and not very expensive?

Reason I’m asking is that i have a Nikon D3100. Anything i should be aware of? It’s good? Bad for this? Too old?

Oh when i say “everyone” i kinda meant all the cool guys on YouTube. I didn’t do a survey or anything. 🙂

Hi! I used to own a Nikon D3100 and recently had it upgraded, I'll share what I found out. Canon's were said to say better white-balance for astrophotography few years ago, with modern cameras really dosen't matter any more, however they were popularised and more filters and accesories are available for Canon. However nowadays if you pick similar cameras for Canon and Nikon should perform the same(Don't try to compare the a 3000€ camera tu a 500€).

Here are my thoughts for the Nikon D3100, it's the most basic DSLR in the Nikon range, and it performs fine for a begginer. The sensor it's made by Nikon in-house, higher end Nikon cameras use Sony sensor that perform better. I found that the Nikon D3100 has way too much noise when the ISO is crancked up to 3200. If you are starting just use what you have, it will do it's work just fine, once you get to a certain level you will feel limited by this entry level camera and eventually upgrade it. I just switched to a second hand D5300 and I can really tell a difference, the noise is lower with the higher-end sensor and the resolution is way higher. Overall, if you already own a D3100 just use it till you get sick of it.
