#Is this a good combo?

I looked around and found a mount and a telescope for deepspace, I have 0 knowledge and wanted to know if these 2 are a good combination or not. I am not sure if the mount can hold the weight etc etc.

Mount:

telescope:

if you've got a general idea of what you want to do and a budget we can help you out. That mount isn't really good and the telescope doesn't have anything wrong in particular but depending on what your plans are may not be suited

mighty flicker
#

Well I want to focus on deep space, my budget is someone around a total of 1k euro. I do have the camera (canon 5d mark ii)

weary ferry
#

the most important part is going to be the mount and the minimum for a goto one is the star adventurer gti which can only hold cameras and small telescopes, if you want something that can hold more than than the eqm-35 is the next step. Unfortunately mounts take a good chunk out of the budget and don't leave much for the telescopes themselves

mighty flicker
#

what would you advise to buy / what was your first setup(can be more than 1k but try to keep it budget)

weary ferry
#

the bare minimum would be a star adventurer 2i (no goto but can be found for relatively cheap) with your camera and lens, the step above is the gti version and again camera and lens. I started out with an az-gti in eq mode and a small refractor, but i don't recommend getting that mount

mighty flicker
#

wait is goto the same as startracker, i just want it to follow so i can have exposure time

weary ferry
#

they all track, but goto allows you to tell the mount to point on it's own to a specific target, with non goto mounts you need to frame the target manually

mighty flicker
#

ooooooh okay,

#

and for a telescope max 500 euro

weary ferry
#

there's a bit of an issue when choosing a telescope. If you want a reflector like the one you linked then you need a beefier mount, for small refractors you can get away with the smaller ones but will most likely need a field flattener which will drive up the cost

#

in general I wouldn't recommend to pick something with a long focal length as it's less forgiving if there are errors in the polar alignment or the tracking isn't perfect

mighty flicker
#

Okay thanks

#

so lets say you were me, you have a canon 5d mark ii. a budget of around 1.5k what setup would you get

frigid marten
#

Me personally a small refractor and a small mount.

weary ferry
#

if you need a portable rig then star adventurer gti and a small refractor with a focal length of max 400mm

frigid marten
#

A bit over is fine too honestly

weary ferry
#

if you want to upgrade in the future to something bigger than the eqm35 and the same refractor as it's easier to use when starting

#

it's recommended to use a laptop or minipc to control the mount and camera as it can be automated and you can use softwares to accurately polar align

mighty flicker
#

the flatterner makes it so that the edges aren't blurry right

weary ferry
#

without it the stars at the edges get elongated quite a bit

mighty flicker
#

okay thanks

weary ferry
#

both eqm and star adventurer can use autoguiders in case you'll want to get into that too, for longer exposures it's quite important

#

for reference I have an evostar 72ed which can take both it's own reducer/flattener (279€) or more generic ones that range from 120 to 150. Don't be like me and get one, I didn't for budget reasons but it's quite ugly sometimes

#

I would personally jump up to an eqm35/eq 5pro, you could get a 130pds or a 6' f/5 to go with it if you want a Newtonian, although those are quite big.

#

Don't forget a coma corrector though

#

If you want a refractor, maybe the TS 72/420 because that has a dedicated field flattener

#

Make sure to consider your targets and which focal length you need

#

The iExos may be able to take a small refractor but I wouldn't really trust it, I think it's worth it to spend a little more to get the eqm35 rather than the SA GTi as it it will take a lot more load before needing an upgrade for not too much more money

#

It'd be pushing to find those 2 for cheap tho

#

A more comfortable and portable setup would be a roki, guiding, and a swsa gti

frigid marten
#

Eqm35<sa gti

weary ferry
#

the sa gti better than the eqm?

frigid marten
#

Whoops other way

#

Eqm35 > sa gti

weary ferry
#

ok lol, that did sound weird

My entire rig was purchased used, no issue on my end other than one snag. I'm a huge proponent of buying used gear

lilac shuttle
#

I got a good deal on my eq5 pro, it was 375 and basically new, plus it came with a wireless adapter

zinc hare
#

That's quite good. Comes to the cost of my eq5 + onstep

lilac shuttle
#

I also got a "used" AA183C pro for 360 but it didn't have any marks on the adapter at all. It also still had the free sharpcap pro trial so that was new too

viral latch
#

I do used as well lol

#

My roki and dslr were both used

lilac shuttle
#

Like who would buy a camera and not use the trial unless it's new

#

Although I can't see many good deals atm, seems like it's better to buy just before the summer

lilac shuttle
#

Oh, it also came with a free 5x2inch filter wheel

zinc hare
#

Manual?

lilac shuttle
#

I just use it as a spacer to reach focus AwkwardSmile

lilac shuttle
zinc hare
#

Ah

lilac shuttle
#

Still not bad tho

zinc hare
#

Still a great deal

lilac shuttle
#

In the summer, there was a quadruplet with fpl53 for 250, THAT would have been a great deal

#

Sadly, I didn't know enough back then so I bought a large aperture achromat

zinc hare
#

Damn

lilac shuttle
#

Now I need a new telescope since the one I have now is designed for visual not photography and it's just way too large anyway

lilac shuttle
#

@zinc hare have you seen and insane deals?

zinc hare
#

Elan once gave me a heads up for a £20 130pds

#

I saw an EQ3 and a 150P for £25

#

Well I was about ten minutes off getting the second one

#

But someone went to get it before me

lilac shuttle
#

Damn that's good

zinc hare
#

MPCC for £60

lilac shuttle
#

I almost got a 269c for less than half price

zinc hare
#

My best deal is probs my camera

#

EOS 100D with a slight issue for £28

lilac shuttle
#

Oooo

#

What was the issue?

zinc hare
#

Autofocus doesn't work through the viewfinder

#

But that's a common asf issue

lilac shuttle
#

Not really a problem for astro

zinc hare
#

I do use it for daily as well and it is an issue lol

lilac shuttle
#

That's pretty good

zinc hare
#

Not for nature photography but for animals and people it's an issue

lilac shuttle
zinc hare
#

It really is lol

#

Buuut I'm gonna get another cam soon

lilac shuttle
#

What's it going to be?

zinc hare
#

Well I wanted a Nikon D5100 for the price and sensor but I'm thinking 1300D is a bit more responsible

#

Since I won't need several cameras then

#

D5100 is Nikon mount which is ass for my huge vintage lens collection

lilac shuttle
#

I assume you're getting that used as well

zinc hare
#

Can't get it new anyway they're both old

lilac shuttle
#

Are you planning to get it modded?

zinc hare
#

I am immensely into DIY

#

(note onstep in my nickname, and I made my own board for that)
