Idk much about books but don't get him that small refractor. Go for a tabletop dob or a full size one

Don't get an ED glass telescope. As a matter of fact don't even go for a refractor, go for a reflector.(dobsonian)You get the most out of it. You can afford a 6" or if you add a bit an 8", but go for whatever you like.

#

ED is more meant for photographing. And with such low Focal Lenght, planets are gonna be RRALLY tiny

#

Thats why you want a big reflector. A lot of magnification and long focal lenght

#

You can still take pics with a dobsonian

Big Agree with Sunnigfu and fenice. A small Dobsonian would be best here imho.

#

As for books - aynthing that's astro science related for kids will work imho. There should be plenty for kids this age.

#

Well - or there are those kits for kids where they can experiment on. Might be interesting to get a kit for optics?

an 8" dob is fairly portable even tho it doesn't look like it, in the end it's just 2 parts

Turn left at Orion is supposed to be a great book

And yes I agree with above and you should get a 8” dob for a first scope. They pack across the back seat of a sedan easily.
