So I've just started the game, I've gotten to lvl 30 and I want to look at life skills but I've got no idea how they work I've done a bit of fishing but I'm.looking at gathering now as well can someone explain to me where I should start with gathering please, thanks so much 🙏

if you are on a season character, for now you can not use mastery gear (what is mastery? is basically what lets you get more drops from the different lifeskills / or horse exp in case of training) you can use the Stella tool or any Magic tool (we got one Stella on the last patch, it is a time limited tool that has nice stats on it).
As per starting, if you want to just level it up a bit, for now get a hoe and start gathering wild grass, usually the go to spot for it is at Bher, you will most likely meet someone gathering there, can ask kindly to them if they are willing to let you see how the rotate on the herbs there, if you do not want to bother picking up grass you can just go chopping wood or mining rocks, but each gathring type needs one specific tool (axe for the trees and a pickaxe for the rocks, yea it was obvious XD)

I also want to ask, other than life skills and grinding mobs for xp what else can I do in bdo

Are the dungeons and raids and stuff like that?

there are dungeons but it's not your typical mmo style like WoW

Can make music, go questing, there are some group contents as of like whale hunts and khalks, but you have to join a specific discord for that go in #community-discords and take a look there, other than this you can explore the map and play as you feel like

Oh... there is also sailing you need a ship tho

Once you reach level 60 there’s a season character quest line that is a very good intro to life skills and a great reward, Treant’s Tear. The quest is called [Season] [Life 101] The Adventurer That Does It All
There are some great sites that will help as you go along like bdolytics, Garmoth, grumpygreen.cricket, blackdesertfoundry, incendar, etc.
