Schools: Umass Amherst vs. UMB

Intended major: Biology, pre-med or PA

Umass Amherst
Pros:

  • Amazing alumni network
  • Good opportunities and research
  • Possible housing with my girlfriend in the future

Cons:

  • Very competitive when it comes down to pre-med
  • No guaranteed housing for upperclassmen
  • Difficult to get into upper-level classes
  • An hour or two from home

Umass Boston
Pros:

  • Close to home
  • Saves money by commuting to school
  • Bit more affordable than Amherst (possible full-ride)
  • Nearby hospitals which could help me get a job for PCE
  • Could transfer to other schools like BU or NEU
  • Semi-good research opportunities

Cons:

  • Not as well known as Umass
  • Too many students
  • Apathetic environment(?)

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Being debt-free is one of my top priorities. I’m afraid that being at UMB won’t give me a good social life, which is important to me.

Addendum:

  • UMB campus is pretty basic and ugly. I feel like I won’t want to stay after class for clubs and social events in that kind of environment. Umass Amherst is also too lively for me? The students are also more competitive.
