cc then USC for BFA design

  • Usc offered transfer plan in which I can attend after my 1st yr at any college with almost a guarantee
  • considered going to cal poly and then applying to usc but it’s harder to get it in that way so I have to choose between cal poly and community college

USC Pros

  • Prestige
  • Close to home
  • Build connections in LA, where I’ll probably work after college
  • Would feel like hard work paid off
    Cons
  • Commute
  • Reapply (need high gpa, more ecs, get LOC, portfolio)
  • Idk how my financial aid will be (heard good & bad things about FA for low income)
  • Not sure if design program if good fit for me (want to go into digital design but seems more fine art based + career outcomes aren’t as impressive)
  • If rejected will probably go to a another cal state (not cal poly)

Cal poly for BS graphic communication or BS packaging technology
Pros

  • Fully covered tuition + dorm (for 1st yr at least)
  • Great career outcomes for both majors
  • “Learn by doing”
  • Become more independent by leaving home
  • Best friend is going as well
    Cons
  • Not as prestigious
  • Feels like hard work did not pay off (did so many ECs in hs but didn’t even get write about it when I applied)
  • Get home sick easily

Considerations:

  • I’m an introvert so if I go to usc as a commuter I see myself being too comfortable at home vs at cal poly I’ll probably put myself out there more
  • I’m not set on a career (in between graphic/ux design and packaging design/engineering) so I’m choosing based off of which school I go
  • Parents prefer I go usc mainly due to location and prestige

Coming from someone who applied heavily to CSUs prior to choosing CC then transferring, I can attest to CSU being a not bad choice. USC sounds like it will be very expensive with little aid if (no offense) they deemed you wouldn’t be a normal acceptance. Could I suggest looking into CSUN? They have a great media program. I’d also perhaps look at CalArts, unless that’s too expensive/not an option.
