Schools: University of Waterloo, University of Wisconsin Madison
Intended major: Computer Science
Similarities: Highly competitive school located in a smaller city with less than perfect weather
Status: Chinese citizen, Canadian permanent resident, hoping to get a Ph.D in computer science then join industry for research (This means I will need a student visa, though 2nd/3rd year I can change my citizenship to void this requirement)
(Probably gonna go in some form of AI/CV/CG combo or System/Embed/Database combo in research)

University of Waterloo
Pros:
- Lower COA(abt $27000 USD)
- Great coop opportunity, with 24 month experience over multiple terms
- Most of my high school friends will attend this university at this program
- Highly reputable in Canada, often known as the best CS program in Canada, also well known and welcomed in Cali/NYC
School 1 Cons:
- Lower research output
- Lower international ranking
- Less research opportunities in school
- Less focused on research
(Though I could work with other universities' research groups over my coop terms and count it as work, if I can find any)
University of Wisconsin Madison
Pros:
- Great undergrad research opportunity
- T20 CS School
- Highly reputable internationally
- High research output, some of the best in the world for system/architecture/network
School 2 Cons:
- Higher COA ($57000 USD)
- Poorer coop opportunity(?)
- I won't know anyone
- Student visa may get revoked depending on how international politics goes
Tiebreaking considerations:
- Coop Internship opportunities for students at Madison (FAANG during Sophomore/Junior year)
- Likelihood of publishing highly reputable paper as an undergrad at Waterloo/Madison with research group
- Possibility of students from other universities joining Madison for collaborations in research
Waterloo for sure
