Schools: Tufts vs. NEU
Intended Major: Biomedical Engineering (Tufts) vs. Bioengineering + Biochemistry Combined Major (NEU). NOT planning to go pre-med but am looking to go to grad school/PhD programs.

Tufts (65K/year)
Pros:

  • Emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. I'm interested in BME/BioE, but also want to explore public policy/global health, which is likely going to be easier to do at Tufts.
  • Great sense of community. From what I've heard everyone is super kind and collaborative with an intellectual and curious vibe that I adore.
  • Smaller class sizes so easier to form relationships w/ professors who are genuinely invested in their students.
  • Love its location; I get a college campus w/ lots of green space but I'm also a train ride away from Boston
  • Prefer its liberal arts tradition compared to NEU's more pre-professional and research-oriented tradition.

Cons:

  • MORE EXPENSIVE (tbh my main concern)
  • Engineering at Tufts is ranked lower than at NEU (do rankings even matter for engineering though?!)

Northeastern (45K/year)
Pros:

  • Less expensive (20K/year cheaper)
  • NEU's co-op program is very strong and will give me lots of work experience before I even graduate + networking opportunities (plus I'll likely get paid during my co-op and won't need to pay tuition while I'm in it!). I know Tufts has co-op for BME but it seems less established.

Cons:

  • The co-op program makes it hard to maintain friendships because you could be on different cycles.
  • Very industry and career-focused
  • Much bigger than Tufts, scared I'll have very large classes and won't be able to connect with my professors as well.
  • Not a huge fan of NU Path (pretty much their core), but I've heard that it's changing and is now much broader/less restricting.
  • I'd prefer not to be right in the middle of the city lol
#

Important considerations:

  • Everything ultimately comes down to cost for me. Tufts will be an extra 20K (or more) per year-- is this difference going to be worth it?
  • Hesitate to say that this will be a huge deciding factor, but I'm interested in studying abroad and have heard very conflicting information about studying abroad at both universities.

neu prob has stronger engineering program

#

but at end of day either is fine, u'll get plenty of opps cuz boston is biotech capital of world

^ You’re probably more likely to go abroad with NEU’s co-op program as well

my heart isnt set on engineering (e.g. may go just to bio)

#

so tufts would allow me to transfer much easier i think

#

can u afford tufts because as a former bme major i can say 80 k difference is a lot for bme major to pay esp w interest

#

go to tufts

#

if u like neu go to neu

hiiiiii @ornate vault

#

you know my thoughts on this already lol

#

also former?

#

as a bme major im scared now 😳

# ornate vault also former?

yeah i switched to cs and math just because oos tuition was expensive esp since im paying for it out of my own pocket and i wouldnt make enough money to pay off debt in reasonable time esp since u need like grad school to do more meaningful stuff in bme

you also already know the thoughts of our entire ap bio class

i think u'll eventually pay it off eventually, the thing about undegrad as someone who goes to school that is like right behind hopkins for bme imo is that its too generalized for u to do anything super meaningful so u need to do grad school a lot of the time and just minimizing debt is prob smarter move if both programs r good

okay that makes a lot of sense

#

i think tho i like tufts' atmosphere a lot more its just financially so much safer to go w neu

#

its also nice to get an outside perspective from someone who did bme lol

rain pivot
#

just ooc what do u want to do w bme degree?

#

hoping to go into biomedical research but more in academia, less so in the industry

#

i'd probably be focusing on regenerative medicine!
