Public health major looking for a college that will really prepare me for grad school. My main choices are Temple (full ride and honors), UMass Amherst (costs $36k after scholarship) and URochester ($76k after scholarship).

Some background info on me: I'm a Wasian girl from NJ hoping to get a fulfilling, well-paying job in public health as an adult (wild dreams, I know). Some things I value in a college are cost, preparation for grad school and career, academic flexibility, a healthy social life for an introvert, and ease of living (dorm quality, proximity to supermarkets, that kind of thing). Thanks for any and all advice!!

Temple:

Pros:

  • Full tuition scholarship is obviously a huge plus, especially with grad school probablt being in my future
  • honors program might help me get the rigor and smaller-college experience that I prefer. plus it gives you priority scheduling classes and really nice dorms lol
  • the city is pretty good for public health
  • Philly is closer to home and has warmer weather than my other options. This doesn't seem that important but Rochester literally has 30 degree weather in April
  • I feel like living in the city might help get me out of my comfort zone

Cons:

  • I hear a lot about safety issues at Temple, since North Philly can be really dangerous sometimes. It's scary hearing about students who have been attacked or killed a few blocks off campus
  • Temple's public health program is very practical and focused on career skills, which is good but I feel like I need more yknow. Also it's almost impossible to double major with public health at Temple while still graduating in 4 years
  • this is a gut feeling but I feel like Temple might not challenge me enough academically
  • Temple is up and coming but my other options generally have a better reputation for public health

UMass Amherst:

Pros:

  • I basically have in-state tuition
  • Program is pretty well regarded, and Massachusetts is a p good state for public health
  • #1 dining hall food is an obvious plus--as a self-proclaimed foodie this is important to me LOL
  • didn't get honors but I hear it's really easy to get into after committing
  • I visited Amherst and I really like it--it has a classic college town vibe
  • Five College Consortium lets me take classes at liberal arts colleges, which I really like !!

Cons:

  • I feel like I'll be completely in my comfort zone here lol. I guess this is a positive in a way but idk I don't know how much I would grow as a person here
  • Massachusetts winters. yeah
  • student population tends to be on the affluent side which. no offense to rich people but I'm trying to broaden my perspective here

URochester:

Pros:

  • one of few colleges that offer a bachelors in epidemiology, which is my concentration of interest atm and is also just a unique thing that might make my resume stand out lol
  • connected to a highly regarded medical center
  • apparently very good for grad school placement
  • open curriculum basically gives me free reign over my courses. it's very common to double major here as well
  • campus and buildings are quite pretty
  • dining was good when I visited
  • smaller school so I get small school vibes yasss

Cons:

  • mad expensive. I'm not sure if I want to give up (and make my parents give up) $76,000 a year
  • also has a lot of rich kids but like. probably more rich than UMass.
-Rochester is kinda boring and also fucking COLD
