Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Money trumps all. I’m low income and every penny counts. If a school doesn’t help their graduates with job opportunities post graduation, it’s not worth it for me. I need an education that will prepare me for a career.
  • GPA. I aim to apply to PA school so a higher GPA while completing prereqs is highly preferred.
  • Culture fit. I come from an art school full of stoners, and my motto is “work hard play hard”. I can get stuff done but I’m not the kind of person that stays on the grind 24/7.
  • Quality education. I want to be invested in my classes and connected with my professors.

id pick brandeis if the difference in cost is not too big of a factor for you

Schools: UNC Chapel Hill vs Brandeis University
Intended major: Double major in Studio Art and Public Health/Medical Anthropology (I am to apply to Physician Assistant School)
Similarities: large opportunities for multiple majors/minors (very important for me)

Name of School 1
School 1 Pros: UNC Chapel Hill

  • In-state tuition, so I qualify for in-state grants and the scholarship lotteries every year
  • Conditional outside scholarship if I accept UNCCH that is valued up to $10k
  • Excellent medical anthropology major
  • Have visited personally and enjoy the amenities (cat cafe nearby, excellent and trendy restaurants, beautiful campus)
  • I’ve lived in NC for 9 years so I’m used to the culture and weather
  • Will cost roughly $3k/year after federal work study (can be covered with loans)

School 1 Cons:

  • close to home; really wanted to move OOS
  • Public transportation is non-existent, I will have to purchase an e-bike once I get EMT certified
  • Chapel Hill is a higher COL city (full of rich kids ugh)
  • Very white dominant culture :(

Name of School 2
School 2 Pros:

  • Awarded presidential scholarship at $15k/year
  • Net price calculator calculated that before loans I would pay $7k/yr but I have no official finaid package, do with it as ye will
  • Ability to take on 3 majors/3 minors, or even create your own degree
  • Close to the Boston area (my end goal is to live in Boston for most of my adult hood sooo) very easy transportation there which is a HUGE bonus
  • Academics are excellent esp for my intended major

School 2 Cons:

  • Cold as hell
  • Very big “grind” culture and STEM classes are really difficult
  • Parties are subpar compared to UNCCH (especially when it’s UNC vs Duke)
  • Campus is ugly.

from what i've heard from unc students, unc has very solid public transportation. buses around campus are pretty consistent, and (when the system is up and running this fall), you'll be able to see bus location on an app to see how far they are from you.
There's also a bus from campus to the amtrak station / airport in durham
