schools: university of rochester and kenyon college
intended major: undecided and very open, considering physics, architecture, engineering, studio art, etc
similarities: very few, besides rigor

kenyon:
kenyon pros:

  • practically got a full ride and can graduate loan free
  • campus is soooo pretty
  • very welcoming social environment, and everyone seemed to have such good style lol
  • close to home
  • i love writing, and kenyon is known for it
  • LIBERAL ARTS <3
  • amazing learning environment, students develop amazing relationships w professors and it's v easy to get help
  • very small class sizes, love it

kenyon cons:

  • in the middle of absolutely nowhere
  • not too well known
  • not a lot of majors too choose from at all/ doesnt have some that i am considering
  • becoming less selective... dont know if this is bad though
  • very small (idk if this is completely a bad thing tho, smaller=greater sense of community)
#

urochester:
uroch pros:

  • more well known/ prestige
  • offers a good selection of majors
  • research uni
  • fat 25k renewable scholarship (waiting on fin aid tho)
  • open curriculum
  • more student orgs!
  • has a HUGE STARBUCKS and i love working at starbucks
  • pre

uroch cons:

  • isolated (tho not as much as kenyon)
  • might suffer more academically here because classes may not be as stimulating/engaging
  • more cut-throat...
  • very cold

assuming cost is similar/same, i'm a bit conflicted

something to consider about kenyon is that even the town is the college

#

like, there is no reason for the town's existence outside of the college, and kenyon's campus is the town

#

so it might be a little small

#

however, it seems like it's perfect for you if you're interested in writing!

#

plus, the people I know who've gone there are pretty great people

#

also, if you're worried about name recognition, kenyon is very well known within writing circles (more so than the university of rochester, I'd say)

Agree with what mrs mew wrote

#

I’d go to Kenyon esp. for writing

kenyon has a great regional reputation in the midwest, and is known internationally for writing. both schools are relatively isolated from large cities. i’d like to reiterate mrs mew’s point about the college being the town - there is next to nothing going on at any time outside the campus community, which does foster a strong sense of community but can make you feel “trapped”
