Schools - Northeastern vs Penn State Schreyer vs UCSB
Intended major: Business Administration- Finance

Northeastern
School 1 Pros:

  • Co-Op is a good way to leave college with lots of work experience
  • Is in Boston which I think is a great city filled with history. I have been to Boston but not the campus and loved the city
  • 28k a year scholarship
  • Great study abroad programs during the academic year and summer
  • Has been increasing in name recognition
  • Has the lowest student to faculty ratio
  • Very career oriented student body (or so i’ve been told by a friend who goes there) which is something I want in a school and could be beneficial to my future career goals

School 1 Cons:

  • Super cold during the winters. I’ve never experienced really bad winters like they have in Boston
  • Lack of school spirit and large sports teams. I think I would enjoy these aspects that a bigger school usually has. I also would be worried i’m missing out on a large aspect of the college experience.
  • They are having a housing crisis and don’t want to be stuck in overflow housing not on the actual campus.

Penn State Schreyer
School Pros:

  • Honors college benefits. Priority scheduling, honors housing, honors advisors, networking events, etc.
  • Big school atmosphere that provides a good social scene
  • Honors thesis sounds like an interesting project that could look good if I decide to go to grad school
  • Nittany Lion Fund is competitive to get into but has very good placement at investment banks
  • Visited the campus and was pleasantly surprised with the local area
  • 5k year scholarship
  • Very large alumni network which could come in handy for getting a job

School Cons:

  • Hard to get too. It’s not easy to get to state college as an out of state student
  • Cold winters
  • Worried about feeling like just a number in a school this big
  • Not very diverse
  • I’m not very interested in many of the entrance to major courses that I would have to take

UCSB
School Pros:

  • Location next to the beach is amazing
  • Weather would be great year round and can be outside all the time
  • Large social scene
    School Cons:
  • Doesn’t have a business school they only have the economics accounting major
  • Costs the most roughly 15k more each year(i’m oos)
  • I’m not sure how a state school that isn’t seen as a large flagship would look to employers especially outside of California if i decide to leave after graduation

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • I wish I knew more about job placement rates and first destinations

  • Overall I don’t know much about UCSB so any additional info on the school and econ-accounting program would be appreciated
