Intended major: Computer Engineering
Similarities: Rankings ig?
Costs: 67k - UW Madison, UMD - 64k

UW Madison
Pros:

  • Room and board costs are lower than at UMD
  • "Makerspace" facilities larger and better equipped than UMD
  • massive national alumni network
  • strong placement in Silicon Valley and Chicago
  • a full Computer Science double major by taking just a few extra coding classes
    Cons:
  • Frequent sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow for several months
  • difficulty signing up for popular CS/Engineering courses due to large class sizes
  • many local job opportunities are centered in the Midwest (Chicago/Minneapolis) rather than coastal tech hubs
  • housed in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, meaning you will be forced to take deep-physics circuit and electromagnetism classes
  • Finding stomach-friendly global vegetarian options on a daily basis is much harder here

UMD
Pros:

  • milder winters
  • access to internships and high-paying jobs in the D.C
  • a highly diverse student body (like more South Asians/Asians here, I prefer this)
  • Computer Engineering degree is jointly run by the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science
  • incredible global vegetarian food, plant-based options, and authentic South Asian/Indian food
    Cons:
  • Higher Cost of Living
  • heavy construction

Preferences: I am Indian (vegetarian) international student whole lives in malaysia, a place that is kinda tropical and sunny, never lived in a cold place before, trying to do a job in future of software and hardware blend, want ot be able to pivot to purely hardware or software

Personally I think UMD might be better, as the higher cost of living can be mitigated through stipends/part time work/academic scholarships later (unless the diffrience is really bad, in which case, go with the cheaper option), also because of dietary restrictions + Used to warmer climates, going somewhere with those needs met would help you academically (dont want to get sick off of something/too negatively affected by cold during exams and stuff)

for UW madison, would graduating in a certain amount of time be a problem? because not only are you trying to do a double major, but you’re also taking those EE departmental classes

for some people it doesn’t matter, but those two bullets stuck out to me

is it possible with the curriculum map they gave you to do that?

not nudging UW-Mad for this, i’m actually committed, but my counselor and i had to do some dissecting to see if it was possible for me to finish my engineering major AND get a certificate in theater with those extra credits

if doing it in 4 years matters, see how long it’ll take for you to finish with UW-M

i’m a firm believer in comfort while learning because ultimately your college is going to be your HOME for 4 years (if i’m understanding your situation right)

i’m middle eastern and pescatarian, and i seriously think the lack of food diversity from the menus i’ve seen at UW-M SUCKS. but i was okay with sacrificing that comfort.

if a part of your living quality depends on your diet, i can’t see justification for UW-M past price.

UMD is a great school and since it edges so close to UW-M in ranking, i really think your tiebreakers are comfort/vibe

i initally firmed UW madison cause i was still unsure between UMD and uw madison but i felt slightly more sure abt UW madison and my mom wanted me to pay in the "auspicious hour" (cause we indians)

i’d say work your best at changing their minds since your heart leans UMD and if that doesn’t slide then

college paid for IS college paid for and both colleges are awesome with great hiring prospects
