Schools: University of Florida and Olin College of Engineering
Intended major: Chemical Engineering (+ Linguistics?)
Similarities: great engineering programs
Costs: coa for Olin is ~$3,000, coa for UF is ~$5,000
UF
Pros:
-close to home
-ACTUALLY HAS BOTH MY MAJORS
-very good chemical engineering and good latin/classics since a bunch of latin kids go to uf
-best school in florida - respected in the south
-lots of project teams supposedly - opportunity for diverse research
-higher chance of making friends
- probably better food than olin
-school spirit + big alumni network
-beautiful campus
Cons:
-SO FREAKING HOT!!! i was there for one day and got a sunburn and i LIVE in florida..
-competing with MANY peers for internships in the small city of gainesville
-job security not guaranteed
-housing is a nightmare
-will have to buy a dining plan, bike, and dorms
-communal bathrooms…
-i’ve been trying to escape florida my whole life
Olin
School 2 Pros:
-basically guaranteed research + prob internships
-VERY good outcomes (and my priority is getting a job) - high salary, good grad schools
-small, so i could form connections with professors
-professors are goated!!! smart and will help w opportunities
-FOOD COMES WITH COMMITMENT
-ONE BATHROOM PER DORM
-not super competitive; very team-based
-small campus so easy to navigate
-safe
-near boston so opportunities there
-far from stinky florida (RELEASE ME!!!)
(minor pros)
-pretty massachusetts
-snow!!!
Cons:
-DOESN’T HAVE MY MAJOR!! WOULD HAVE TO GET MASTERS IN CHEME FROM ANOTHER SCHOOL POST-GRAD
-i’d have to abandon linguistics
-SUPER small so social scene sucks
-very far from home ☹️
-literally nobody has heard of it
-ugly campus and lowkey mid food
-honestly a risk
Tiebreaking considerations
-how often do people get their masters in cheme after getting their ba in meche?
-how good are the linguistics/chemistry programs at babson and wellesley?
