Im in NY and going prehealth

Schools: Colgate University, Stony Brook University (dorming vs commuting)
Intended major: biochem
Similarities: not much at all honestly.
Costs: Stony Brook coa not counting personal costs and books - 13-16k around probably. BUT if I commute its legit $0
Colgate coa without books and personal costs is 11k

Stony commuting
Pros(over dorming):
FREEEEE.
Cons(compared to dorming):
3-4 hour daily commute overall. Idk if its doable as many say they regret it, but at the same time many ppl say its doable. Its a 50% commuter school after all.

Stony dorming
Pros(over colgate)
Better access to research, it has its own hospital, probably more opportunities as a large public research institution. my friends are there, the social life isn't super active but I like that, closer to home
Cons(compared to colgate):
A little more expensive, a bit less prestigious. Im pretty sure its premed students into med schools acceptance rate is pretty low.

Colgate
Pros:
A little cheaper, nicer campus, facilities, and food. A bit more prestigious. This place also has like a near 80% acceptance rate into med schools tho.
Cons:
BIGGEST con for me is social life, its fratty culture is a big turn off cuz im like the opposite of that. I also dont fit the demographic at all. It's also very isolated so maybe not as many opportunities.

Tiebreaking considerations
I need more information on colgate. It does have its good med school acceptance rate but I still feel wary considering how isolated it is. Does anyone know of the opportunities offered at colgate and if it rivals those offered at stony (labs, hospital, internships etc)

Maybe I should try colgate 1 yr and transfer? Idk honestly

I would dorm at Stony but visit Colgate and give it a chance. E.g. maybe the premeds aren't fratty

Don’t trust any “acceptance rate into medical school” stats you see

I know u brought this up as well but Colgate and Stony are in completely different areas. One’s well connected to the city through the LIRR the other’s in a village of 3000 people in the middle of upstate ny

#

I’ve been to Hamilton a couple of times and it’s a nice place but I’d keep it in mind

Colgate has a summer internship program with the national institutes of health for research. I also wouldn’t consider housing as much in the grand scheme of things so I’d lean towards Colgate. I’m not super well-versed in the world of pre-health though.

Id lean stony brook personally

#

Especially bcs if it is less competitive, it might be easier to get good grades
