Schools: Carleton College vs Washington University in St. Louis
Intended major: Not sure, but interested in mathematics/statistics/psychology
Similarities: Private schools with a smaller undergrad pop, pretty liberal
Costs: Similar
Carleton
Pros:
- Great professors (ranked #1 in Undergraduate Teaching) who form close relationships w students
- LAC pros: builds critical thinking skills, easier to get undergrad research and study abroad opportunities
- Friendly, nerdy, close-knit vibe
- In a quaint college town 45 min away from Twin Cities
- Easier to explore interests bc of liberal arts curriculum and trimester system?
Cons:
- Nobody knows what it is (not super important tho)
- Super cold (I live in the south)
- Bad food apparently
WashU
Pros:
- PNP major (Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology) sounds fire
- Gorgeous campus + dorms and food have a good rep
- Better resources - higher endowment
- More prestige?
Cons:
- T20, but one of the more unknown names
- Don’t know much about the student vibe/culture. Probably more competitive
- Grasping opportunities will take more effort and energy and I don’t have a lot of self drive (need to work on this)
Tiebreaking considerations
- Don’t know really know which would be “better” for my major since this is an LAC vs uni situation (correct me if i’m wrong and one has a better rep)
- Want to go somewhere with a thriving band program / music scene
- Would love to know more about the culture at WashU
