Schools: Northwestern and UNC
Intended major: Journalism + political science
Similarities: Both are great for journalism and political science, love the cultures there, and know some friends there
Costs: UNC (in-state): $28,952, Northwestern: $62,869

UNC
School 1 Pros:
Lower cost
Good weather
Good newspaper that I could contribute to
More flexibility if I wanted to go on to law
Bojangles
School 1 Cons:
Not in a great market for journalism
I want to get away from Carolina
I think I would be a small fish in a big pond, and I want to build close ties with faculty. I don’t think UNC would help me do that
Not diverse (I’m African-American)
Duke fan
DTH April Fool’s rubbed me the wrong way

Northwestern
School 1 Pros:
Best school for journalism out there
Right near Chicago
I love the campus and the Northwestern vibe
Relatively diverse
Opportunity for a fresh start away from home
Best newspaper out there
Established track to NU grad school for law
School 1 Cons:
Crazy cost that I would have to supplement with loans
Can get stressful, I’ve heard
Pretty far from home
Miserable weather
Social scene is pretty dead (?)

Tiebreakers:
Would a degree at Medill vs. Hussman justify the difference in cost?
Is Northwestern really as stressed and quiet as people say it is?

Journalist here who transferred out of Medill (lol)! I would say that the strength of Medill over hussman is really not that big. I’d also say that the strength of a college paper literally does not matter whatsoever, it’s all about what you do with it. That said, I get wanting a new, diverse environment. But that cost difference says it all. Do not take out loans for J-school, ever.

ugh i cant blame you for the DTH shit, UNC got some warts for sure (esp with NCGA meddling in admin affairs)
i will say though i agree that the difference in cost is absolutely not worth it, agree with jay 100%. 30k per YEAR is a LOT of money to spend just to get away from NC

i will also say that like, while its not easy to make close connections at UNC, its not hard or impossible either? you just have to put in the effort, find opportunities to meet with the faculty, things like that. and the faculty are AMAZING.

if you have questions about UNC in general id be more than happy to answer, altho i wasnt journalism unfortunately
