Schools: Northwestern and UNC
Intended major: Journalism + political science
Similarities: Both are great for journalism and political science, love the cultures there, and know some friends there
Costs: UNC (in-state): $28,952, Northwestern: $62,869
UNC
School 1 Pros:
Lower cost
Good weather
Good newspaper that I could contribute to
More flexibility if I wanted to go on to law
Bojangles
School 1 Cons:
Not in a great market for journalism
I want to get away from Carolina
I think I would be a small fish in a big pond, and I want to build close ties with faculty. I don’t think UNC would help me do that
Not diverse (I’m African-American)
Duke fan
DTH April Fool’s rubbed me the wrong way
Northwestern
School 1 Pros:
Best school for journalism out there
Right near Chicago
I love the campus and the Northwestern vibe
Relatively diverse
Opportunity for a fresh start away from home
Best newspaper out there
Established track to NU grad school for law
School 1 Cons:
Crazy cost that I would have to supplement with loans
Can get stressful, I’ve heard
Pretty far from home
Miserable weather
Social scene is pretty dead (?)
Tiebreakers:
Would a degree at Medill vs. Hussman justify the difference in cost?
Is Northwestern really as stressed and quiet as people say it is?
