hi guys!! ty in advance!

  • Location/Region: I’m from Massachusetts.. I prefer urban schools. I like Boston, NYC, DC, and California (really looking for private schools here), but I’d go anywhere if the school fits. I am also really considering schools in Europe.
  • Major: I want to work with different cultures and people around the world and help them. International Relations is my primary major, but I would also like to double major in history if possible. Ideal major is IR + Journalism, but I have only seen a few schools with that specifically.
  • Curriculum: While I don’t know much about this, I really don’t want a core curriculum. I want to take classes that go towards my major, not random subjects, and I want to pick what classes I want. I really like an interdisciplinary IR major. I would love to take language classes, such as Russian or Arabic or Portuguese. I want to be able to focus on a certain area of the world or even a couple. Also need good study abroad, and I would like a club tennis team.
  • Size: The school size isn’t as important, but definitely not less than 1000. Overall I’d like a mid-big school with a more personal department.
  • Schools You're Currently Looking At: USC, Georgetown, William & Mary, Northeastern
  • Costs: Not quite sure what the budget is, but I am middle class and definitely need aid, also need to work during college.
  • Additional: I just want to be around others who are smart and informed on the world. There needs to be a good alumni network. I also want to continue to volunteer and write for the newspaper. I want the school to be diverse!

HI MASSACHUSETTS TWIN

#

Tufts is great because it's good for IR, has good study abroad opportunities, is in Medford (my hometown), and also has a strong focus on civic engagement. I don't think they have a journalism major though. They also have a language requirement to graduate so that works well with what you want to do with language

#

Brown has an open curriculum (although they don't have a journalism major) and a strong alumni network, and they are all about being interdisciplinary

#

Also note that you can take a double major in English that will set you up pretty well for journalism at most schools

#

Boston University has a major in journalism as well as IR

#

Pomona College could also be a good choice, they're a pretty global school and their IR majors are required to travel abroad, as well as learn 1-2 foreign languages.

#

I think you could also look into pursuing a major lilke East Asian Languages and Culture rather than just International Relations. If you're interested in just learning about a single region rather than analyzing global trends like world trade or democracy, a region-focused major like that could be a better fit

For safeties, obviously you should apply to UMass Amherst for in-state, it's a great school. Northeastern is also a pretty good chance because it seems like you won't mind being sent to another campus, so there's a pretty good chance of getting something you are happy with--you can rank the London campus second, and it's pretty good for the humanities. Other safeties you could look at are American University and George Washington University

yeah american is not really a school that you are going to love love, but at the same time they have decently strong international relations programs and it's in DC so you can have good opportunities

#

if you aren't feeling it, then no worries though

#

you will get into umass

NYU is pretty nice. The village is away from all the buzz thats in the hell that is midtown, however you still get the "City" experience, especially since its so close to soho

#

they also have a really good journalism department if thats also what ur interested in

#

I would say that it is very pricey, however since you are also looking at Northeastern I just added this in since its a similar price range. Northeastern in general tends to give out aid more frequently, however NYU gives more aid money to those that receive it. Also if you are looking at Northeastern then make sure you get as many co-ops as possible, since most of them end up being paid internships.

Still a good school to consider but not cause of journalism haha
