Location/Region: Anywhere in the US I just wanna make sure the job opps are near NYC

Major: Finance/Econ/Bus (anything that finance roles require)

GPA/Test Scores: 4.0/34 ACT

Curriculum: Northing specific

Size: Not too large where finding a job is hard like anything more than like cornell is too much expect like UMich or crazy good schools

Costs: Everything works fortunately just need to make sure career ops at the end are more than tuiton/cost

Schools You're Currently Looking At: Wharton, Princeton, Yale, Duke, UMich, UT Austin, Brown, Cornell, Harvard, COlumbia, Georgetown, UNC

Additional: I wanna do IB/PE high finance role after college so something that can achieve that and I am not sure what school I can get into so if someone could help see that would be great

glad latch
#

Georgetown is one of the top schools for IB

#

Have you thought about NYU Stern??

#

What are you looking at for instate publics?

#

Lots of state flagships like IU, UC, UMich etc have good business programs, also UMass to some extent

#

I think you could look into expanding your safety list in particular

candid shale
#

Fordham, Baruch, IU, Binghamton, Boston College, Lehigh (4+- in financial engineering). Penn State, TAMU, UGA, UF, UW Madison, Wks Forest

forest snow
#

@cosmic dome IB/PE kid this is ur thing to help with

cosmic dome
cosmic dome
#

umich is good though

#

and berkeley

#

IU sucks butt

glad latch
#

oh i thought iu kelley was a good school oops

cosmic dome
#

its okay

#

not for ib

#

u need to get into ibw

#

which is hard and isnt guarenteed so its not worth it

cosmic dome
#

UChicago is also excellent

mental hare
#

so basically my in-state in NY/NJ/CT and my only safety is the top instate school for my state

#

and theres a reason for that but my logic is I either go to a feeder IB school or my in-state and save monoey nothing in-between like IU or UIUC

mental hare
mental hare
mental hare
glad latch
#

oh rip

mental hare
#

u @ gtown?

glad latch
#

not committed yet

#

but yeah

#

public policy major

mental hare
#

is ea boost over rd?

#

thats good major

#

for gtown

glad latch
cosmic dome
#

its exxagerated a bit

glad latch
cosmic dome
#

stern is really toxic though even for a b school

glad latch
#

if you want to get ahead in ib you will have to grind lol

mental hare
#

which is super comp

#

like the GUSIF

cosmic dome
#

u dont need to rely on clubs

#

although they do make it easier

glad latch
#

to be honest i don’t know all that much but i doubt that’s true

mental hare
#

my ecs keeping it bland are : officer at 20k raised npofounding member lots of impact here, CEO (not founder) of my niche interest podcast we impacted like 9000 ppl (we have courses too), co-founder of app same niche partnered with like 5 unis

#

research at ivy (prof promising me a publication hopefully before college), RA at another ivy (lowk did nothing), research at local uni maybe get published but been here for a good bit of time

#

and the rest is js presidents of clubs at school

cosmic dome
#

eh

#

still kind of reachy

#

research is good and your npo is nice but i dont really see the fin spike

mental hare
#

what do you think I can do

cosmic dome
#

id do something directly related, internships, a competition, founding a club with actual impact

#

you clearly show your academically strong enough via ur research

glad latch
#

look for impact

glad latch
#

get involved with your actual community

mental hare
#

like something niche in finance the npo, app, and pod

cosmic dome
#

ehhh

#

like wdym

mental hare
#

like financial literacy stuff

cosmic dome
#

yeah thats super cliche

#

everyone does that i wont lie to you it wont make you stand out

glad latch
#

dont just engage nunbers on the internet, aos like to see you engaging with the people around you IRL

glad latch
#

so i agree

mental hare
#

I founded investment club if that means anything

cosmic dome
#

he has impact via his ngo

#

depends on what u did w/ it

#

btw

#

for the podcast

glad latch
mental hare
#

raised 20k

cosmic dome
#

when u say impacted 9k

#

is that viewers?

#

subscribers?

mental hare
#

nah

#

9k courses downloaded

#

from Udemy

cosmic dome
#

alr

#

yeah thats pretty good then

mental hare
#

what u think is a good ED

cosmic dome
#

i will say though

glad latch
#

wharton

cosmic dome
#

be careful w/ that when u explain it to the schools

#

u dont want to sound like you already know everything

#

and r selling courses etc

#

frame it humbly

mental hare
#

alr its free the courses

#

wharton too comp bro

cosmic dome
#

they also prefer more pre professional

mental hare
#

kids be wayy too sweaty also does going to a feeder HS matter?

cosmic dome
#

his is more academic

mental hare
#

alr I go to a t100 HS

#

like 150ish

cosmic dome
#

doesnt neccessarily mean its a feeder

glad latch
glad latch
cosmic dome
mental hare
#

I have VC internship

#

my HS sends like 20% to ivy

cosmic dome
#

ok

#

so its a feeder

glad latch
#

k

cosmic dome
#

what % r u in the class

mental hare
#

2%

#

maybe

cosmic dome
#

top 2?

mental hare
#

yea

cosmic dome
#

pretty good

#

it helps then

#

i would maybe aim for a 35+ on the act

mental hare
#

how though does like the AO know the school

glad latch
#

i think you should branch out on your ECs a little bit

#

schools that are holistic like harvard stanford yale gtown, brown also especially

#

like to see range

cosmic dome
glad latch
#

and they know ur school context

#

and in ur case likely have a relationship with the counselor

mental hare
#

hmm

cosmic dome
#

@mental hare

mental hare
#

so about the ED

cosmic dome
#

whats ur region

#

if u dont mind me asking

mental hare
#

is duke good?

#

NY

cosmic dome
#

nyc ny?

glad latch
mental hare
#

NYC

cosmic dome
#

oh

#

wow

mental hare
#

public

glad latch
#

magnet?

cosmic dome
#

yeah maybe dont ed wharton

mental hare
#

yea

#

what about Duke?

cosmic dome
#

u dont have to ED

#

duke is good

#

but personally i wouldnt bind myself to duke for IB specifically

#

if u like duke though

#

go for it

mental hare
#

is it not good for IB>

cosmic dome
#

it is

glad latch
#

i did not ED and i think that was a great choice

mental hare
glad latch
#

you can EA your instate publics, Umich, UT austin, georgetown, UNC etc

#

so a lot of different choices EA

#

also takes the burden off of your RD applications

cosmic dome
mental hare
#

ivy?

glad latch
#

which lets them be higher queality

cosmic dome
#

wharton

mental hare
#

say ong

cosmic dome
#

ong

mental hare
#

bro what

#

ur in IB>

#

?

cosmic dome
#

i did a year already yeah

#

GS

mental hare
#

holy

#

fkc

cosmic dome
#

thats why i got mentioned here lmao

mental hare
#

lol

#

so you think I got a chance

cosmic dome
#

of course

mental hare
#

at Duke or Wharton im tryna max my chances

cosmic dome
#

duke fs

#

wharton is super comp in nyc

glad latch
#

no one ever has a "chance" at wharton bro

cosmic dome
#

most of the people ik from nyc had like 3+ bb internships

glad latch
#

wharton is wharton

mental hare
#

alr i lowk kinda lied its not NYC is like a bit further rural I js didnt wanna reveal

cosmic dome
#

eh

#

ny is still pretty competitive but it helps

mental hare
#

tru

#

someone form my school

#

0 ecs got into wharton

cosmic dome
#

interestin

#

legacy?

mental hare
#

nah ED

#

tho

cosmic dome
#

interesting

#

btw wharton ED doesnt give a big boost

#

its marinal

#

marginal

#

most of the people filling up ED is legacy or recruited

mental hare
#

does duke give ED boost cause every1 ik got in RD

cosmic dome
#
  • qb and fgli
#

duke does but again its not like a big game changer

mental hare
#

what was ur mainecs

#

dang bro I didnt know u went to wharton I thot u went to like Umich or smthn

cosmic dome
#

my best was my sport fs

#

it wasnt a recruit sport

#

but i was like a multiple time nat champ and i was on the us nat team

mental hare
#

archery?

cosmic dome
#

nah

mental hare
#

hmm anyways does awards rlly matter a lot

cosmic dome
#

like the honors section?

mental hare
#

compared to ec's cause I think that is my worst section

#

yes

cosmic dome
#

i lowkey had shity ones i wont lie to you

#

so i dont think so

#

i had the psat one, the ap one, johne locke highest distinction i forget what is called

#

and thats it

#

i had pvsa too

#

gold

mental hare
#

yeah high distinction thats good

#

they stopped pvsa

cosmic dome
#

oh really

mental hare
#

also since ur in IB, whats like the top 5 feeders

cosmic dome
#

into IB?

mental hare
#

yea

#

or PE/HF

cosmic dome
#

wharton harvard princeton

#

uhhhh

#

maybe

#

mit and stanford

#

columbia might replace one of them though

cosmic dome
mental hare
#

Mit?

#

wild

cosmic dome
#

yes

mental hare
#

is duke nepoed?

cosmic dome
#

Sloan serves as a excellent pipeline for the UG interested in MIT, just not alot in mit interested in finance

cosmic dome
#

not really

#

its a legit target

mental hare
#

I see the ppl who got internships all went to private with HS tuiton of 50k

cosmic dome
#

theres always gonna be nepo

mental hare
#

is IB recruiting hard?

cosmic dome
#

i mean yeah

#

you need to be spotless for 3 years

#

for a good chance

mental hare
#

hmm

mental hare
forest snow
cosmic dome
#

@mental hare

#

you seem to be kind of right

#

duke seems to have a bit more nepo vs other schools

#

but its not georgetown levels

#

its still highly respected as a target

#

(Same with georgetown)

#

im not sure though if thats due to club recruitment

peak mural
#

@cosmic dome can i ask u something about kkr

cosmic dome
#

?

mental hare
cosmic dome
mental hare
#

if I get into Duke and try a little for internships and stuff IB shouldnt be a problem?

cosmic dome
#

nah

mental hare
#

also what abt cornell dyson

cosmic dome
#

a lot more comp though

mental hare
#

well thats not good

sterile marsh
#

Youll be one of the annoying campus finance bros but we have better percentage elite firm placement than HYPS + Penn

#

Plus smaller classes so good professor attention

#

Downside is our econ department is grade deflated and difficult but ur applying to cornell so that should be gucci

sterile marsh
# mental hare Mit?

Mit has a tiny percentage of people going into finance but for the ones that do they have insane placement

#

Like 80% percent. Thats why I said Dartmouth has better percentage placement than hyps and not hypsm 💀

cosmic dome
#

lmfao

#

what type of bias is this

#

😭

sterile marsh
#

The elite firm presence number

cosmic dome
#

He puts a lot of weight into total size

#

Dartmouth I can assure you is not stronger then any hypsm

#

It’s weaker then some tier 2s too

#

Regardless yes it is a elite target school

sterile marsh
#

I mean…i agree but, is that your argument against Dartmouth 💀

#

Cuz without it dartmouth would be 7th in percentage of student body presence

#

Which is certainly not tier 2

sterile marsh
sterile marsh
#

You can look into their data to disprove that but the data itself seems accurate even if you disagree with the ranking methodology

cosmic dome
# sterile marsh Of what investment bankers we do have, a higher percentage get placed into elite...

Not too sure about data but I was on my school’s recruitment group in GS and Dartmouth isn’t seen as more desirable as a tier 1, which there r only 5 being hypsm and Wharton (replacing either s or m depending on the firm), this leaves Dartmouth and the other ivies and top 20s in tier 2 or lower, Dartmouth like any other ivy is strong but its pipeline is not that strong in the way you describe it

cosmic dome
cosmic dome
#

Sometimes Stanford or mit

#

He also derives his data from LinkedIn which isn’t the best way to get these metrics

#

I know personally you might feel Dartmouth is super elite from your experience, but so may someone at brown or someone at Cornell, if we look at it overall and from recruiting priorities in general Dartmouth is never ranked as a tier 1

mental hare
#

Soup is right

#

I checked the top club at Dartmouth for finance and none of them placed

#

I thought I was tweaking for a sec but @cosmic dome agrees so prob not better than cornell

#

MIT is a dream school but idk why they would accept me most of their acceptees are like very academic and strong awards in math

cosmic dome
#

yeah they r very quantitative

sterile marsh
#

Obvious just random firms w no connection to dartmouth with perceive it as t2 level

cosmic dome
#

GS is a random firm?

#

its kind of the industry standard

sterile marsh
#

But recruiters w connections to dartmouth will prioritize our alums more than other schools do theirs (same reason we get ranked so strong on alumni networks, being in the woods for 4 years makes you a lot more immersed w the college)

sterile marsh
#

Not random firms

cosmic dome
#

uh

#

i dont think you really understand how recruitment works

#

your team has a process that is applied to the whole for the specific groups, other banks like jpm and other bb use pretty similar systems

#

its not my opinion but the company's placement

#

additionally that might be true for specific recruiters

#

but its not the recruiters decision

#

its the teams

#

they might be able to vouch a bit more, but its not substantial

#

additionally

#

thats not how it really works either

#

since recruitment is done by school

#

so everyone doing dartmouth recruitment is dartmouth alum

#

so there isnt really any alumni bias

sterile marsh
sterile marsh
cosmic dome
#

no

#

how would lead to more bias

sterile marsh
#

If everyone doing recruiting at a school is an alum them schools with alums who care more will have more bias

cosmic dome
#

not how that works

#

what

sterile marsh
#

Idk man linkedin isnt perfect but unless theres a specific reason why dartmouth people would be more likely to be on linkedin (for some reason?) then its a good sample size for a metric

cosmic dome
#

they also dont have a quota, its a does he meet our standard, yes? what does this mean, it means that they understand the school and whats impressive for the school, they select a small amount that they deem imprssive and send the information to the main team and they interview and decide

#

he/she

#

the alumni have little say in the decision

sterile marsh
#

Not to discount your personal experience but like there is a clear disparity with what you’re saying and whats shown. And you definitely have more finance experience than me but equating a complaint on methodology to a complaint on data to discredit a source is not how the scientific method works

cosmic dome
#

not really

#

ok

#

then i guess

#

whats your reasoning for stating dartmouth is better then hypsm?

#

for "elite" placement

sterile marsh
#

I did not say that

cosmic dome
#

is that not exactly what you said

sterile marsh
#

I said it places a higher percentage of people going into the field into elite firms

#

And my reasoning is the source 😭

cosmic dome
#

the source being peak frameworks?

#

thats like you using a opinion newspaper as evidence

sterile marsh
#

That doesnt really equate to being “better” than hypsm because if the pathways arent there its not as easy to do IB and a percentage difference is marginal

sterile marsh
#

Again

#

You have to discredit the data dude not the website nor the ranking methodology

cosmic dome
#

a higher yield into "elite" firms per capita is literally one of the definitions of target status

#

im discrediting the way the data is sourced

#

via linked in, in a reduced sample size, void of any context or actual true weighting

sterile marsh
#

Like you cant really discredit linkedin as a source when very few top college graduates dont have linkedins and there is no confounding variable that would skew results towards dartmouth

cosmic dome
#

also im looking at this source, and peak frameworks lists dartmouth as a semi target, which is def not true it is a target, but this just shows some discrepancies in their data and how they weighted such data

sterile marsh
#

The sample size is large enough to be representative

cosmic dome
#

yes maybe, but the data is not verified, and can easily be fabricated maybe not by peak frameworks but specifically by users on linked in

sterile marsh
cosmic dome
#

im also wondering

#

where did u get this elite firm yield

#

data stat

#

im not seeing it

sterile marsh
cosmic dome
#

ah i see

#

ok

sterile marsh
#

Without a confounding variable there isnt a reason to suspect these skew numbers

cosmic dome
#

maybe so but this data def isnt enough to support your claim of better placements due to alumni

#

and peak frameworks itself made this "elite" firm statistic, what it classifies as elite firms is questionable

sterile marsh
#

That was just a reason I threw out there because it seemed logical. I’m not banking my argument on it being true

cosmic dome
#

i know

#

the list is questionable

#

is what i meant

#

that actually

#

doesnt matter that much

#

so ignore that

sterile marsh
cosmic dome
#

it is odd how dartmouth thru these statistics has better "elite" firm placements

#

but i dont think its anything to base a claim on

#

SMU is a 60%

#

which is explained by nepotism

#

there is usually context explained behind these numbers, im not too familiar w/ dartmouth

#

but i highly doubt its due to it being "dartmouth"

#

or that their alumni care more

#

wait ilied

#

i lied

#

wrong data lemme recheck

sterile marsh
#

Like even among good schools

cosmic dome
#

yes agreed

sterile marsh
#

Again, didnt have evidence, just seemed logical

cosmic dome
#

but by that logic

#

yale should be stellar

#

and looking at it

#

brown too has quite a high yield into elite firms

#

which i think it might be because those schools arent obvious finance into ib schools, so those who go into IB are much better prepared for what high finance requires and more interested in those elite firms

sterile marsh
#

I mean i think you kind of have to find a balance

#

Yeah

#

Thats what i was going to say

#

But the thing is dartmouth is financecentric. We dont have the lay prestige to be famous for it but its the number one field here

#

Thats why we’re also 7th place for the percentage of student body going into the field

#

Other schools that have higher percentage yield dont have a high percentage of undergrads going into it, which means its probably due to nepotism or 100% confidence like you said

cosmic dome
#

perhaps

#

but i really question that point

#

simply because yale isnt that high in %

sterile marsh
#

I mean

#

Yale isnt too known for econ, is it?

#

Last I checked

cosmic dome
#

no but EP and E is a direct feeder

sterile marsh
#

Their alumni network is famous among hypsm but it usually isnt ranked alongside schools like dartmouth and notre dame in pure strength

cosmic dome
#

and additionally those interested in finance would reach out to alumni

#

perhaps but from what ive heard its also very tight knit

sterile marsh
#

Not nearly as much

#

The student body is much bigger and you have new haven to explore

#

Dartmouth is a tiny school of barely a few thousand people and you literally only have the woods

#

The only activity you can do is to talk to others and get involved in the college

cosmic dome
#

i get your point

#

hmm

#

let me ask around w/ people in those teams

#

i dont really think even if alumni were that big into helping they could influence it that much

sterile marsh
#

And alumni are insanely overinvolved. They vote for issues that impact the decisions the college takes, they constantly visit, and they even have sex in undergraduate students beds (we’re told to lock our doors when they come visit)

sterile marsh
#

Not more than hyp but more than the rest of the ivy league, if that makes a difference

cosmic dome
#

not really

sterile marsh
#

Like you can get pretty much any non paid internship financed. You can take one across the world and dartmouth will pay for it and give a few thousand extra

#

Might be good for recruitment, i dunno

cosmic dome
#

most schools do that

#

since most ivies are targets and have direct relations w/ the bank

sterile marsh
#

🤷‍♂️ fair enough

cosmic dome
#

actually all ivies r targets

sterile marsh
#

Wait would the grade deflation have anything to do w it

#

Our econ department has an enforced B+ median. Econ students voted to make it that way so that their gpa’s would look more contextually impressive

cosmic dome
#

no because again the team is filled w/ dartmouth alumni and you are only compared vs other dartmouth students so they understand the school in the context

#

it might make a difference in the interview rounds if your interviewer is a asshole

#

but i doubt it

#

actually scratch that

#

i dont think it would make much of a difference at all unless its drastic and very recent

sterile marsh
#

Not recent. Idk how you define drastic. It is definitely very hard to get a 4.0

cosmic dome
#

only time i could see where that matters

#

is lower semi targets/non targets

#

since they r all clumped into one basket

sterile marsh
#

Its unfeasible to be consistently two median grades above the average in every single major class you take filled with other ivy level studenrs

sterile marsh
#

Either way this campus is very financecentric

#

Moreso than cornell and columbia, which are the other two schools i have a lot of experience being around

cosmic dome
cosmic dome
#

dartmouth is a well rounded school and apparently finance centric

sterile marsh
#

Like i know you said im likely to be biased and I cant promise im not but it definitely seems like us not being famous for finance is more a result of low lay prestige moreso than what we do or dont do well

cosmic dome
#

i think the main reason why is that your class sizes are smaller so the presence isnt as obvious

#

thats also why so many people think stern is super strong

#

even though its not

sterile marsh
#

Yeah true. Doesnt help that the number one study when you research placement rankings only ranks based on total hires (and then admits its own fault and only remedies it by showing a secondary graph where total hires hold 2/3’s weight)

cosmic dome
#

again which is why context is extremely important, even raw data doesnt tell a full story

#

people think kelley is underrated when its not

#

its a terrible school for finance

#

its simply the IBW that makes these numbers for kelley

sterile marsh
#

Makes sense

#

Either way I think i got my point across so im gonna go back to studying

#

This was very informative thank you

cosmic dome
#

maybe so ill ask around about dartmouth and its alumni

sterile marsh
#

Let me know if you find anything out!

mental hare
# sterile marsh Let me know if you find anything out!

I would agree with Soup the rankings on Peak Frameworks is kinda messed up cuz Dartmouth is highly nepo with parents working in finance so they go into the intention of wanting finance jobs so their placement compared to total class size is higher

sterile marsh
#

That is literally not what soup said lol

mental hare
#

idk my friend also junior there and didnt break in I think

sterile marsh
#

Also i dont think dartmouth is any more nepo than any other ivy? We sent such a large relative percentage of our students there that itd be impossible to attribute it to nepo

#

Like a school that sends 0.5% of its undergraduates is probably all nepo lol but we’re 7th in undergraduate percentage going into IB

mental hare
#

nepo/hooked

#

Nobody from my school every got into Dartmouth (I go to feeder) and the only person that did was double legacy, and the only other person was worth 10+ mil + legacy

sterile marsh
#

Dartmouth doesnt have higher legacy percentages than other top schools lol

#

So that experience is purely anecdotal 😭

#

Dartmouth is actually on the lower end

#

Dartmouth is 11% vs stanford and cornells 15% for example

#

So if anything that would indicate that dartmouth is less nepo, unless you’re implying people with nepo connections choose dartmouth at a higher rate without even having legacy

mental hare
#

for this summer program I wanna know like the rating out of 10 and AO would give

sterile marsh
#

No I feel like thats unethical

#

I would probably not want to choose a teacher who asked me to write my own letter

#

That kind of defeats the point

mental hare
#

well she told me the other alternative is her chatgpt

#

so.. lmao

sterile marsh
#

Which is like

#

A really good sign not to ask that teacher for a LOR

mental hare
#

@cosmic dome sorry to ping u but how is UPenn without wharton

#

in terms of placement

cosmic dome
#

strong

#

target

#

not a t ier 1

mental hare
# cosmic dome target

rlly? compared to duke better? and also can you take wharton classes as much as possible

#

cus every1 onine keeps saying apply to wharton for finance and econ for grad school

cosmic dome
#

they r relative

mental hare
cosmic dome
#

most people interested in high finance would do wharton so theres a lot less from CAS on linked in

mental hare
cosmic dome
#

no they do

mental hare
# cosmic dome no they do

yeah seems like most ppl are saying good for BB but EB/PE/HF is where the difference shows, seems like Cornell Dyson might be better placement wise

sterile marsh
#

Gov has a higher percentage of finance employed alumni than law

#

Top employers for sociology, linguistics, classics degrees? Usually dartmouth itself or google but after that its like the top 5 finance firms in order lmao

#

like this is for GOVERNMENT.

#

Probably some survey bias but dude 😭

#

I cannot pick a major no matter how stemmy or obscure without finance being the top sector or at least 2nd place

cosmic dome
