  • Location/Region: I’m in California, though willing to apply somewhere on the East Coast. Or perhaps even internationally?

  • Major: Marine biology, oceanography, or other related majors.

  • GPA/Test Scores: 4.0 Weighted, 3.3 UW

  • Curriculum: preferably a deep sea class. Stuff that deals with the depths of the ocean. A focus on marine trenches and all things related to the oceans abyss. And a focus on marine invertebrate anatomy. It’d be neat if there was water polo or swim available!

  • Size: relatively small, it’d be nice to have a small student to teacher ratio.

  • Costs: haven’t figured it out yet. hopefully get a scholarship. I will definitely be needing aid. I want to go to college for 4 years.

  • Schools You're Currently Looking At: UCSD and CSUMB.

  • Additional: For the college to be on the coast? Not for aesthetics. Just because marine biology would be a lot easier if the college I go to isn’t land locked.

  • Be Detailed! definitely want an inclusive college! Somewhere I won’t be judged for just existing as a human. And scuba certification!! That would be really helpful. Definitely want a roommate!happythumbsup

FIU which is in Miami FL so great opportunities to access scuba diving https://case.fiu.edu/biology/students/undergraduate-programs/bs-in-marine-biology/

Nova Southern looks like it has interesting learning opportunities https://hcas.nova.edu/degrees/bachelors/marine-biology/index.html

This looks like it could be really interesting https://www.hpu.edu/cncs/natural-science/oceanography/index.html

And then maybe you could look to see what the admissions requirements for schools internationally look like.

Here are some programs for that - https://www.marinebio.org/careers/international-schools/

The following is our list of schools outside the US that offer degrees in Marine Biology. Most links open directly to each school’s marine biology program. The list is a work in progress, so please contact us if you have any comments, changes or additions.

no problem! it might help you to make a google sheet with School Name, Location, Total Cost, Net Price Calculator, Scholarships that your gpa/test scores would be competitive for, and then brief key words about the schools program

My bestie from a limnology internship I did does marine bio at Berkeley and they have really good marine bio resources and internships for their students. Shes in Tahiti right now as part of a marine bio research internship that they offer

#

Berk is public and large though so idk if that’s what you’d prefer

#

If you’re looking for east coast umaine might be worth looking at

have you thought about scripps?

NEU also has a marine science center, although I think it is primarily graduate you could probably do undergrad research there https://cos.northeastern.edu/marinescience/

Research at the MSC Marine Science Center researchers conduct vibrant, diverse research, focusing primarily on climate change impacts to marine habitats and how coastal urban communities can best prepare for these effects. Education at the MSC Public Tours of the MSC Join us for a guided tour of Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center ...

I also know St Andrews in Scotland has a 5year masters in marine biology

If you ever want to look at lake ecology more as part of their landgrant deal they do a lot in Oneida Lake and the Great Lakes w/ the bio field station up there

Think it’s already been mentioned but ucsc

Beach, forest, good research, the whole shabang

Yes UCSC is a good option. but I don’t really wanna go the same college as my cousin… I feel like I’ll take away from her goals plus I don’t find that place appealing. Which is really weird. I want the deep cold ocean!!! Thousands of metres down. And CSUMB and alike colleges will likely give me that opportunity!!

Yeah that’s a good point! But for some reason Santa Cruz just doesn’t interest me

I know you said small but University of Delaware has a whole campus on the delaware beaches (Lewes Delaware) dedicated to marine biology. I can't say too much what its like since I've largely ignored UD since I'm a delaware native and just felt like it was overrated for me but if your coming from the west coast definitely check it out. It's 45 minutes away from philly and you have a direct commuter rail connection to the city via Septa (philly's public transit system). Tuition costs 39,190 (data from the 2024-25 school year). Vibe wise I would have to categorize it as a mix between of University of Alabama and Rutgers University. UD was known as number 1 party school back in 2018 but they have since rehabilitated that image with the ranking now at #40. The school is on the larger side with about 19k undergrad students attending for the 24-25 school year.
