**Location/Region:**Lives in Miami Dade County in Miami, FL. Willing to move out of state IF I can get a huge scholarship.
Major: I preferably want to do any law related majors and minor in philosophy.
**GPA/Test Scores:**As a sophomore, 3.8 Weighted 3.2 Unweighted (about to be updated within the next couple of weeks) and an 1100 SAT.
**Curriculum:**I want to preferably take Philosophy and Law classes.
**Size:**I don't really care, but I would prefer bigger schools to meet more people
**Costs:**Not that expensive, fair price.
**Schools You're Currently Looking At:**I am looking to the University of Florida, Miami Dade College, and Florida International University (FIU)
**Additional:**I am not that interested in any "rival" schools within Florida, such as FSU or UM. I preferably want to know what schools are out there that are near Florida (the state), what classes I should take, and what majors.

Miami Dade College is awesome!!! I did a summer medical research program at UM and my lab mate went to MDC and then transferred to a top 4yr college from there.
You're going to need to be more specific about what "not that expensive, fair price" means for you because that's different for everyone
Me personally, if it is in state, 7k annually, 31k out of state
Annually
@frosty cave
And you're currently a sophomore right?
Indeed
I been to Mdc for a visit, campus is nice
Also do you think MDC will have a law research program for HS?
no idea but you should look! I'd also be open minded to political science, english, sociology, anthropology, community service, or cultural programs too.
To see if they have any outreach programs for High Schoolers in the general field of humanities
What does your current extracurricular engagement look like?
Well, I have been a community service guy, helped out for 7 weeks in a Special Needs Program, and used to teach martial arts for 3 years, 1-2 years during high school
I plan to do a summer internship and also try to work with a professor to do research on anything law related
do you have any other clubs/sports too?
I am currently in NHS, but chances are I am gonna be removed since I didn’t get enough points, will try again next year and actually do well
I will try to join the law club and do a mock trial next year
ok. one thing that big-time colleges will also care about is long-term commitment and continued engagement to something. So it's good that you're a sophomore so you have time to start doing things now and continue them throughout the rest of HS.
You could look into volunteering somewhere for a specific population to get in the habit of continued service and activism for others which is important for law.
And then yeah any hobbies or things you can take to the next level, if you like reading, joining a book club, and things like that can be super helpful
I see
Tbh Florida is such a big state and if you're in Miami, the closest out of state schools are going to still be 8-10 hr drives.
but then a flight from Miami to Cle, OH is like 2.5 hrs. So is there a specific flight-time distance you'd want to be near home?
To be honest, any state that borders florida
And any state close to the state that borders florida
Anything past Tennessee/North Carolina no
Anything past arkansas and Louisiana to the left no
only reason I go past that is I get a great scholarship
Which is actually not impossible
I am currently on track for the Capstone Diploma
hmmm ok, and then what kind of college experience do you want? sports culture? dorm life? research? internships? access to a law school on campus?
This is a great question, I am completely fine with a smaller more peaceful college, but also open to the university experience of a p4 sports school and making great friends with similar beliefs and interests
Dorm life would be nice
and research internships AND access to a law school would be great
@frosty cave
Sorry if you are busy btw
that's ok! i'm jumping back and forth between a document i need to write and this so my responses are going to be a bit slow
ok cool! I don't know anything about Florida schools, so I'll focus on OOS recs that are interesting. But to be completely honest, going to any Florida school through Florida Bright Futures program would probably be the best option for you in terms of affordability with an equivalent experience as any of the other schools I could think of
I agree
I also want to see any good options for out of state
Ah I see, what document is it for
for work
Ah I see
ok and then what's your identity/background? in case I see scholarships relevant to it
Ok check these out, they all have law schools associated with them:
George Mason: https://www.gmu.edu/financial-aid/types-aid/scholarships
University of Alabama: https://afford.ua.edu/scholarships/out-of-state-freshman/
University of Kentucky: https://studentsuccess.uky.edu/financial-aid-and-scholarships/academic-scholarships/incoming-freshmen-scholarships (this requires your unweighted GPA to be at least 3.5 to get full out of state tuition which should be doable in your next few semesters of HS if you lock in, i think that would also help with admissions chances to a lot of schools regardless)
FIU
Louisiana State University: https://www.lsu.edu/financialaid/scholarships/incoming-students.php
Stetson University (Florida)
Mercer University: https://undergrad.mercer.edu/mercer-scholarships/
UT Knoxville: https://onestop.utk.edu/scholarships-financial-aid/scholarships/?student=first-year
No matter where you are in your academic journey, our Office of Student Financial Aid can help you find scholarship opportunities for your unique needs and eligibility.
Affording college at the University of Alabama
To really qualify for the scholarships at these schools though, you'd have to lock in on your grades and extracurricular activities starting now
I am a hispanic white male
I would be the first in my family to get a bachelors
Imagine I go to Tennessee or LSU 😂
All jokes aside, I will look into these
ok I would look at George Washington, too then: https://cisneros.columbian.gwu.edu/cisneros-scholars
Is UF included with these
oh yeah I left out UF cuz I knew u were already looking at it lol
yes this is a great opportunity to learn how to google the school to find the scholarship page on your own
Alright I will
I am currently on a road trip back to Miami since I was in tennessee
ohhh ok
@frosty cave

I noticed the "John V. Lombardi Scholarship" due to it stating the "exceptional intellectual curiosity, creativity, civic responsibility, and leadership potential."
Ah but it is a Honors Program Scholarship
this is good research! yeah you have to be admitted to the honors program first to qualify. so you should see what those admissions requirements are. but then also form there keep in mind you would have to be one of the students that stand out the most amongst honors program students which includes a high unweighted gpa, high test scores, long-term extracurricular engagement and leadership and impact in your community
I see
I think a lot of those things are things you can still do and might not work out for that specific scholarship but could definitely earn you others at UF or other schools you apply to ]
I see
I am going to look at the honors program requirements for UF
FAHHH.
"Middle 50 percent:"
ACT: 34 - 35
SAT: 1500 - 1560
"Average GPA:"
4.68
Well shit.
And I gotta do another essay?
I could probably do it but I gotta work my ass off
you can do it! shoot for the moon and land amongst the stars as they say.
obviously do your best. U.S. colleges aim to recruit people who aren't just coasting but super active and engaged academically and extracurricularly. I think you have a good foundation of that that you can build on.
Also you might not need to wait until next year to join clubs at your school, Id just reach out and ask
Alright bet
Thank you!
npnp
what classes are you taking and planning to take next year?
this looks like a cool opportunity: https://miamisao.com/careers/miami-sao-internship-opportunities/high-school-volunteer-internship-program/
Also if your high school has any community service clubs that could be good
also things like sports if you want/are able to get back into martial arts
Got a list of the important ones:
I take 8 classes per school year:
AP Lang
AP Stats
APUSH
AP Research (elective)
AP Bio..? (might take Bio 2 then take AP Bio senior year)
Elective
Elective
Academy class
bro found the fucking jackpot itself
I will talk to my consular about that
ok these are great!! do you know what options you have for electives?
I have plently of options
are any honors classes?
I am not sure, I can check in a couple of months
Since the schedule selection process is either this month or next month
ok
also i can't remember all the first gen/latino scholarships in your area off the top of my head but i have a list of some
ok, I would recommend honors social science classes so you can explore different areas in the humanities to see if they interest you.
Interesting
I am currently taking AP Psychology
I'd also explore sociology, anthropology, niche history areas like ap art history which was so fun
Total cost of attendance or tuition?
If you want big time scholarships, the best thing you can do is prep as hard as you can for the 11th grade PSAT
FAU has an honors college in Jupiter: https://www.fau.edu/honors/academics/majors/philosophy/
Looked into it and I sent an email asking of the requirements and other things
They have not responded yet and when I try to contact the phone number they don't answer at all
so
A lot of people don't go back to work until next week
