Guys asking again(forgot to follow template last time)

Guys any recommendations for unis for math + (cs/physics ), I would prefer unis where I could go to the advanced classes quickly using some placement exam or by permission of instructor, and that the has quite a few grad level classes.

For reference I took Multivariable calculus (differential only), Linear algebra , abstract algebra, theoretical computer science, light and heat, and modern physics in dual enrollment. I also self studied some analysis tho like at Spivak level (ik not technically analysis ).
Guys pls I am so scared of college admissions tbh 😭😭😭,UChicago rejected me ed

Once you no longer need help, change your post tag from “Still Need Help” to “Decided”.

Template

  • Location/Region: India (international)

  • Major: Math

  • GPA/Test Scores: homeschooled so no gpa, 5 in AP calc ab subscore, 4 in AP calc BC (I was just too overconfident that I Iwill get 5 without studying 😭)

  • Curriculum: I would like the uni to have enough grad level classes and easy prerequisite skip for basic ug classes, so I can take 3-4th year courses early.

  • Size: small is preferred, but not my main priority.

  • Costs: noaid (intl)

  • Schools You're Currently Looking At: Pitzer, cmc, UIUC, umichigan, Waterloo, Toronto

  • Additional: I would like the uni to have anime club,(hope to play anime songs in a band 😔), competitive programming club, good math people .

I don't know many universities that have math placement exams into the levels of math you're looking for. Your best bet would be to find out if they accept the dual enrollment transfer credits from the university you did dual enrollment with.

#

AP calc BC will get you out of calc I and calc II. So the earliest starting point would be multi or lin alg first semester freshman year without the transfer credits counting. If the transfer credits count then you're chilling.

#

I would look at Purdue because they'll accept an unlimited # of transfer credits, it also looks like you can get them to tell you which credits will transfer while you await your admissions decision https://admissions.purdue.edu/become-student/transfer/credit/

Learn how to transfer college credits to Purdue. Find details on transfer eligibility, credit evaluation, transcript submission, and credit from testing or military experience.

#

Other schools to look at: UW Madison, Northwestern, U Maryland, Carnegie Mellon, Ohio State, Princeton, Stanford, Caltech, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia

It's important to check the math dept course offerings and what their transfer credit and math placement policies are to see if they match your interests/needs.

# timid belfry Ohh ic ic

like the other commenter mentioned, harvey mudd is in the same system as pitzer but it's much more stem oriented

proven drift
#

yeah i would choose Mudd or CMC over Pitzer or Pomona

#

but its a consortium so you can still get the resources

timid belfry
#

And they need chem

#

😭

#

Id also probably choose nyu or uiuc or gt over cmc lol. depending the type of ugrad environment or experience youre looking for

#

or mit

timid belfry
#

Also I am also applying UCSB ccs

timid belfry
#

Pitzer has much higher ar

slender hull
#

yeah but do they have the rigor of math and physics that u want?

timid belfry
#

Which should be rigorous

slender hull
#

that's true too

UGA has credit by exam in the physics department and has math 3500H which might still challenge you. (Look at the syllabus here: https://jasoncantarella.com/wordpress/courses/math-35003510/ ). (Conservative state)

Michigan is good.

OSU has an honors math track, semester 1 uses Spivak and semester 2 is advanced calculus by Folland. The second year courses have "or permission of department" so if you self study it should be possible to jump into those courses. (Look at honors track 2 sample schedule: https://math.osu.edu/undergrad/current-majors/requirements/honors) (Somewhat conservative state)

UWisconsin and UMD also have rigorous multivariable calculus for freshman with a 5 in calc BC.

URochester has an honors math track and the option to start in the second year of the honors math track for those with a lot of proof experience. Unlike the state schools where you often need to apply specifically to the CS major to get in, URochester does not admit by major so you will have an easier time registering for CS classes. It is also very flexible with general education requirements

Notre Dame has credit by exam for calc 1-3 and LA&DE. https://math.nd.edu/undergraduate/honors-math-sumr/ (not sure if you can skip year 1 of honors math; consider asking the math department)

MSU has an honors linear algebra course for students taking the honors math degree, which is unusual in that even the upper level courses like analysis and algebra have honors versions

CWRU has exams: https://mathstats.case.edu/math-proficiency-exams/

Your grades are probably what got you rejected from UChicago.

#

Have you registered for calc BC for this year?

#

At NYU CAS you could take honors calc 3 and honors linear algebra first semester. At Tandon you could place out of calc 3 and linear algebra and take honors real analysis first semester. Tandon also has fewer non-STEM general education requirements

#

I imagine there would be much more competitive programming and math people at NYU than at pitzer

outer robin
#

Remember if you're applying to NYU checking the "I do not need aid" box will increase your chances of admission but you will not get any financial aid for all four years even if something bad happens

#

By the way, where did you take your DE courses from? "Light and heat" makes me think it's Stanford ULO in which case it's not DE and you won't get college credit from Stanford

Okay then just be sure to apply to some safe-ish universities.

NCSU is also an option - I heard someone on Reddit say there are math students taking graduate courses second semester, but I'm not sure about physics.

Btw thanks a lot for the help guys 🔥

You should look at some of the universities I sent you

timid belfry
#

I looked at Rochester

#

Seems nice, will apply there

#

Notre dame is probably hyper competitive for intls due to being need blind

#

I looked the honours classes tho

#

*liked

#

Umd I have applied, it had good support for autism too which my parents liked

outer robin
#

Another option is MSU, they might accept your math and physics credit and if so you could take honors analysis and classical mechanics first semester

timid belfry
#

Thankuuu

#

For the help overall

#

I am so worried abt college admissions ngl 😭

look into brown, and look up brown avge

#

if you have any questions lmk i study math here

#

@timid belfry i really think brown would be a great fit for you, there are no traditional "gen ed" requirements, and professors are lenient with allowing students to take courses with overrides/graduate level classes. i know ppl who have taken upper level/grad math courses in freshman/soph year and there is literally an anime video game ensemble (avge)

timid belfry
#

Wow orz, tho it’s test mandatory 😭

#

My sat is way below my other stats

shut cloud
#

i dont think its a strict requirement to have an "excellent" sat score

#

plus you could make up for it in your other aspects of application

timid belfry
#

I know it’s not an excuse but I gave without prep 😭 , I have had lots of health issues in hs

shut cloud
#

dont let your score discourage you from applying
