They don’t wait list and reject based on EFC alone. There are probably other parts of your application that fell short as compared to others. It could be that you were seeking financial aid as well. No will know why you exactly got rejected except for your AO, so move on and look forward to the next decision.

An international seeking financial aid will always be an uphill battle, no matter the school. All schools become reaches if you’re an international seeking financial aid. I reference my previous message with the stats of internationals seeking aid at the top and highly selective schools. Do check it out.

Most of your T20s, those that are need-blind, have ARs of 2-4%. Look up the Common Data Set for the exact figures. Those that are need-aware don't publish their data, but expect it to be in the 1-2% range. For smaller LACs, it will be in the sub 10s.

What makes you a one in 50? This is a question that you have to ask yourself. Admissions is informed subjectivity, yes there is some luck involved but it is not all luck.
