hm ok
u didnt self report?
Yeah my score was really low so I was scared
issssssss alright
aww
yes this is good to add
it's definitely an acquired taste, ever for the most diehard nerds
I mean you self report though if you want your score to be considered
You don’t need to officially send in scores through college board for it to be considered
yea theyre saying self report
yeah it's self report
carnEDGEie mellon university
🙏
what does this pray mean
is there a cmu 2030 server?
Ye
Hope you get in
ohh tyyy 🙏
i am very happy with cmu
although i think its a lot more work than other colleges
based on what i hear
my friends at other colleges get 0 work
vs im in the studio till 2am
😭
Not at all
It feels normal to us because that's all we've experienced though 🙏
how yall balancing classes with clubs/resaerch tho
If you grad in 4 years it’s rather easy to balance
You just do lol
Again I don't think the workload is a lot but this is all I've seen
Though art students may have different experiences LOL
im talking cs lol
I am in CS
not screwing yourself by taking too many hard classes lol
Why are you up Spence
💀
is there stats on accept vss reject
BME is only double major
you double it with another major in college of engineering
doesn't need to be ece, can be matsci, meche, or chemE too (i don't recommend chemE tho)
People typically do ChemE + BME additional major
Don't most bmes do ChemE as primary major?
personally ive seen a lot more matscieng with bme, and i've heard not great things about the chemE program
Oh okay
I mean my friend is in chemE and he likes it
Though not interested in BME
what year are they, am curious
Freshman
Maybe not the best authority ig
4 I'm pretty sure
probably haven't taken any of the chem e brutal classes then? 1st sem freshman
Yeah prob
Hows your final year? Senioritis?
uhhh i just finished a 60hr/wk fce sem, next sem better be the easiest thing i ever do in my life
tf did 0you take. OS?
FCE
is capped at 25
nono, i did 18620, 18622, 18623 + 2 geneds
18622 fce says 23hrs/wk tho
:)
Is that 3 technicals 😭
im IC maxxing
What's IC
integrated circuits, basically making chips in silicon
actually that might be 700+ maybe its masters level
Ohh
its all good :)
I think 6xx is masters yeah
How was the chocolate class?
well sure. After how much suffering
pretty fun, they give you chocolate to sample every lecture
you getitng better now?
Wait I saw a reel about this
Do you actually make it
no i watched the person make it tho
i think im in the video somewhere
Oh okay
yeah i should be
came home an immediately got sick so lmfao
Woooo

yeah i mean its pretty cool to learn an extremely large amount of information on how chips are produced in such an extremely short period of time
definitely very cool to have an understanding of how a computer is made from the base silicon
was not easy, and I don't recommend, but good experience to see how far i can realistically push myself
I highly recocmend pacing your classes
yeah i agree
is a personal growth journey fine for the. 3rd essay
the one about something that i want to share
i was gonna talk about how i lateen to the same song 30k times last year and the song profession kinda matches different points of my life
herro
uhh
am i cooked rd if i got deferred ed and more ppl in my school are applying rd for cs
nope
🙏
Especially if your in bay
It looks like they just plonked entire classes of bay schools in Gates
what should I talk about int he additional info section
liek growth or maybe liek a snippet of my life?
do not add anything unless there was no space in the app to do it, for example you have a learning disability that prevented you from taking or doing well
no its a supp
the
oh
i thought u meant common app
pick a super interesting fun fact or a topic you love to talk about and write about it
a lot of folks did that
wait can I talk about like an event in general?
or should I pick like a subject or niche interest
like if my website and research were a big part of my app can i put links to both or is that tacky? It said to put any "qualifications"..
Ngl I feel personally without that they dont have any real evidence I did anything (particularly for the website). but i have no clue if its a good idea or not, or if it will be interpreted wrongly 🤷♂️
And one paper from my research is still under review for the conference it was submitted to (So i linked the preprints on arxiv)
i mean its a personal website with my github projects and like 40 of my graphic designs
My linkedin is the first that comes up for my name and it has the website too but im not going to bet on them searching for it
fair enough
how i see it is they will see it and either a) beleive you on the spot no questiosn asked or b) be hesitant and dig for liek 5 minutes nad find it
so either way youre probably good
I think it gives me more credibility (I submitted my ea apps without any of this
)
where ea?
Umd and stanford, and I applied to UCs
My research was at one of the UCs and I worked directly with a professor. I mentioned that and im not concerned about the verification at all
But no evidence of my website 😭
md as in mn duluth or maryland
Maryland
i se
chudputer science
😭
brutal bro
everyoe say its chopped
would they reject you if you looked like jordan barrett
😭
I ain tryna get a job tho. Im tryna go to grad school and teach
but it still might be cooked 😔
ngl sounds liek a dram but then i check my bank accoutn forf the crisp 200 dolla rpaycheck
its ok ill just do day trading to pay for Grad School
LOL
aight bro
atp whats the point of grad school
i guess yeah
Idk what else
My dad got a job then left it then did grad school so idk
Now he teaches
Might be the method if im broke after college
Consider your application as a whole. What do you personally want to emphasize about your application for the admission committee’s consideration? Highlight something that’s important to you or something you haven’t had a chance to share. Tell us, don’t show us (no websites please).
for this prompt what should I talk about
a specific moment in time that made me realzie something
a short personal growth trip?
or
i just talked about one of my hobbies lol
i think anything will work as long as the essay lets aos know a little more about who you are
yea
huge
yo bro 46
youa re wasting an entire years worth of tuition in applications
are youc razy
not half a year, plus it’s worth it for anyone entering the most crucial four years of their life
Education is priceless
CMU explicitly says no links portfolios or websites in the application please
Unless it’s for like design/art or somethn like that I think
Idk
its about 4.5k
Whoops I did not follow that
is cmu all about collaboration?
is that a big thing i should bring to light in my app?
Id say so it’s a big part of what we do here ig
Lot of working together
Idk 😭
I get that. It's not anywhere in my supplemental essays. Common App in general asks if I have any additional 'qualifications/details" I'd like to share so I just put two links that verify the credibility of my claims there. it's not something I am doing specific to CMU. If they don't look at it, then they don't; but to me, having it there is better than not
it says no links in the 3rd essay but i put some in common app add info
Yep
Ahh valid
Pls CMU let me in rd
fr
man everyone seems confused by this 3rd supp
personal stories or realizations probably go better in other sections (in my opinion) but you can pretty much put whatever here
i ended up writing about a project idea that i had, and basically walked through how I'd make an immunocompromised plant for immunocompromised patients. i never ended up doing the project (might get to it this sem since ill have time) but the point was to illustrate my thought process and even moreso my curiosity
my situation was unique as i was in the hospital at the time of writing the essays. but you should be able to take similar ideas and apply these to your supps
consider how your application looks, and what impression you'd like to give to anyone reading your application, and use this supp to fill that out
2/3 of supps are why major and why college so
I think the last 1/3 is anything a branch of ur commapp essay didn’t is good?
Like if personal essay was about community, the anything supp can be about intellectual vitality
Idk that’s what I’m thinking
why would you make an immunocomprimised plant
i cant lie that doesnt make sense
you cant bring plants or soil into hospital rooms for immunocompromised patients. the wording is kind of strange, the plant basically needs to be grown in a sterile way, which makes it kind of immunocompromised in a way
ohhh
As in at the uni? Or in chat
First one yes but not as much as the other way round
Since Pitt has better parties/ life etc (practically everything afaik except Student org funding) People generally prefer to walk to Pitt
I'm pretty sure it depends personally I haven't been through the process, but generally it's kinda hard to switch between schools like for bio to mechE it's MCS to CIT
Within college it is relatively easy
o ok, its cuz i got hella bioE ec's but theres no major for that, i wanna do the 2nd major thing for it but in order to get in bio would make more sense with my app
you can also take an additional major
that might work
it's easy to get an additional major in any school even if it's not urs
so bio + biomed eng?
im not familiar with our majors but yeah if that's a second major
you can do that
Ur primary just has to be in ur college
then you can add wtv u want lmao
dangg im torn
cuz i rlly wanna study engineering
but i know im not getting in cuz all my ecs are bme
technically computational bio is best but thats in the school of CS 💔 i am not getting into cmu cs
oh rip
hey u can take a comp bio additional
you learn nearly just as much
like evidently an additional is pretty much the primary but u don't got the school's gen eds
yeah liek looking at the primary versus the additional ur just losing out on some electives which i mean nothing is stopping u from just taking extra electives lmao
i wanna do electrical engineering but i go to a tech school so i was never able to do a physics or foreign language class
am i cooked?
it seems that cmu has a focus on collaboration. Should i talk about collaboration in multipel supps, or use another supp for a different value that carngie has
it used to be harder i believe, i know one of the first transfers from mcs (physics) into college of engineering (ece) that happened in a few years. the year after there were more and i know others have transferred from tepper business as well, it should be getting marginally easier
intracollege is still an order of magnitude easier, however specifically it's getting harder for other majors within college of engineering to switch into ece
no physics is worrying, do you have anything that could be counted as replacing that?
I’ve been in an electronics program at a tech school for the last two years so I’ve been doing basically intro to electronics stuff and I have college credits from that
I’m also planning on doing physics as a dual enrollment class this coming semester
alongside trig and stats
this is a good idea
yeah I'm not sure how much foreign language will matter, but if you don't have physics somewhere on the transcripts you'd likely be cooked
I technically have half a year of foreign language from 9th grade
I think I could explain why I don’t have all the required courses tho
I go to my tech school half the day so I only have like 5 classes on a regular day. cause of my district having a lot of required classes I don’t really get to do any electives or extra sciences/maths at my main school
For my sophomore I literally have six classes on my transcript lol
ED 1 results?

yo
Yo twin
👀
fr bro these RD apps also not treating me well
same bro same
There's always a chance!
You should apply
I put my diversity essay 💀
(I am not diverse at all relative to the CMU population)
i also applied to hci 😔
Ur diverse compared to the relative scs population
At least bro is not a bay area Asian
Lowk yeah
That's just cuz I'm from Florida though 💀
Rip
I'm so sorry for your unfortunate upbringing in Florida
I can go outside without wearing 5 gazillion layers of clothes 🙏
im from seattle my geographic diversity is cooked
so as an hci major im as cooked as cs majors

🐶
Exactly
You don't declare major until sophomore year
I'm technically undeclared rn
*freshman second sem
bro was not paying attention during FIC smh
It goes into effect sophomore year though 😔
I never did comp math and I am usaco silver
ic
were ur ecs cracked
Idk
hmm
eh no idea
hmm
And many don't even depend on you
but competing with scs kids
It's just what the school wants at the moment
is everyone very cracked there
for example I wrote the most dogshit essays known to man 😭
yea
It's hard to say
I also don't ask random people for their college application 😭 🙏
People do seem very passionate though
define passionate
They really like what they do
And that thing varies a lot
But that seems consistent across CMU
ah ok
Same
One of my essays was lowkey controversial 🗿
does cmu admit for major?
School
No, it's its own school
Idk less popular engineering majors def less comp than cs though
cs definitely
massive
id say cs is more competitive than the most popular engineering majors such as ece
nice
!
and you go to cmu?
no one in my dept, dorm floor, or people i’ve met in general live in florida
except me
Does CMU have any sort of maker portfolio thing for SCS applicants?
engineering is more comp, cs is theory
oh wait not what you meant by comp
cs is definitely more competitive
don't believe so, the admission is much more based on grades, ecs, and test scores
lmaoo
Yeah
LOL
I can count the number of people I know from Florida on one hand
My friend told me the internal transfer from MCS to SCS isnt super difficult as long as my gpa is good enough
yeah definitely not as difficult as direct entry. your gpa within CS classes before your transfer needs to basically be perfect tho
If Im usaco platinum do you think i should apply directly to SCS?
My friend at SCS told me i should apply to MCS for physics first if i want to maximize my odds of getting admitted
isn't there a section on the app to select three preferences for admission?
It only asked me if i wanted consideration for fine arts lmao
huh i guess they've changed it
Did u apply directly to cmu for ece
yup
Is ece within CIT?
for mcs -> scs transfer you do have to do basically a years worth of CS courses and maintain good grades in those courses + generally and then transfer might be ok
yeh
That sounds pretty ez
just don't fuck it up
Is it bad if my school has a complete different curriculum than the ap
And i cant get cred for csa
thats annoying because your credits will likely not transfer
you'll have to either test out of stuff and take harder courses later to make up for it, or redo a bunch of beginner content
its really annoying, none of my credits could transfer so i had to test out of a bunch of stuff
is it cpp or java??
the test out thing is in java, but its not super different from concepts you'd learn in a cpp class
Oh
intro courses for programming here are in python and C
So i just have to get a 4.0 in the cs courses my freshman year
And im basically set for the internal transfer
Non-SCS students
CMU students in majors outside of SCS can apply for transfer into the Computer Science major or a dual degree in Computer Science. Students considering a transfer or dual degree are expected to earn at least a 3.6 QPA in 15-122, 15-150, 15-210, 15-213, 15-251 and 21-127, and have an overall 3.0 QPA.
from the website
But it’s much harder to get a 3.6 in college right
usaco plat in what field?
Compared to hs
15-122 isn't too bad, standard intro to C with some DS and algo, 15150 is functional programming (weird inbetween of theory and fp basics), 15-213 is intro to systems (not too hard just some basic interaction with low level C and OS fundamentals), 21-127 (intro to proof based mathematics, 21-128 is also an option that is more rigorous and may be more interesting if you already have experience here), 15-251 is ideas in theoretical computation (extremely math heavy understanding of the reductions, complexity, different ideal computation models), 15-210 is basically advanced algorithms and algorithmic complexity study (this is an in a functional programming language which makes it hard to write, but easy to analyze complexity)
usually people find 15-251 or 15-210 the hardest, but this depends on the person
yeah 3.6 average in all of those
i think mcs and cs take ~5 classes a sem with 2-4 being technical
im ngl if i dont get in cmu, imma apply for a transfer all 4 years
So like for freshman and sophomore year ill prob stay in MCS then junior year i can switch out to SCS
yeah thats usually the path that people take
you can transfer to something different still i believe, but idk about those transfer requirements
I like physics but im only applying as that because i fit the major very well and its less comp
Like cs/meche is prob the most direct alignment w my profile
Most of my schools im applying as a physics major and i regret applying directly to cornell engineering ed cuz i got deferred
i know people who transferred from physics to ECE but they did that super early on. if they didn't do it as early graduating on time may not have been possible
So they basically came into CMU knowing they would switch out to ECE
not sure if that was their plan, i think they looked at the curriculum during/after the first sem and wanted to switch
probably to some degree, physics specifically is in a weird spot
Should i try to get a quant internship then?
Because physics aligns w quant pretty well
And i know cmu feeds into those quant firms pretty well
i think quant is more selective, i've heard that they focus much more towards the CS majors, with some ECEs getting hired for fpga stuff
quant is weird tho
Yeah quant is def more selective
if you're good, they'll want you
I really want uchicago because they’re super flexible w major declaration and stuff
CS students usually take 15151 (equivalent to 21128) unless it's not available
yeah but they're asking about the mcs to cs path
The SCS kids def get priority
oh i have no idea
Im trying to play it safe because i know that MCS is def way less competitive considering my fit+applicant pool
And i want to increase my odds of actually getting admitted to cmu
I got deferred ed to cornell engineering
You haven't applied to cmu then?
Just apply to SCS then
But i have to re-do my why major essay and i feel like my major essay for physics is really good
I don't think it's worth it to apply mcs if you're just gonna transfer to SCS
Really
The admit rate for scs is like 6%
You can frame it as computational science
So You Want To Transfer To SCS (or double major, or minor, or something) An SCS Transfer’s Thoughts Written by Brandon Wu Last revised, January 2023 Author’s note: This document has long since outlived the audience that it was written for. Regardless, I hope that the information contained withi...
Transferring to SCS is not a good experience at all from what I've heard
My friend at SCS told me he knows hella people who did it tho
Dang
yeah like its sucks beans to do
I think you basically have to speedrun the whole CS core and do much better than the average SCS student in it
But sansk you have to understand that im basically risking my chances of admissions to CMU by applying to SCS
And you won't have any reservations for classes or anyone to advise you
What about from CMU MCS TO CIT?
I'd read this
this is probably more annoying tbh
But I personally feel like the only reason I would go to cmu is for their cs program like I would hate to stay as a physics major
Then don't apply for physics 😭
It's really hard to transfer
As much as i like physics the job market is absolutely cooked for phys
CIT is going through some restructuring and transfering to cit is possible but you're advisors will be as annoying as possible about it
also if you do it late, you're not going to grad on time
or take any of the actually good courses in the majors
Transferring within CIT is annoying lol
So many CIT people are tryna transfer to ECE
yeah this is getting locked down
Oh yeah that's the case of SCS too
Idm doing an extra year of college tbf
like if you want to get the most out of the degree you have to direct apply
bro shits expensive
That is true
That's 90k more 💔
generally people want to get out early with transferred credits
Cant i test out of some of those courses tho?
Not really lol
you'll have to take other classes to cover for those units if test out. and you can only test out of like 15-112
In math, there is an exam but it's usually just to get into a harder class
If you wanna actually skip like 15151 or smth
There's only like 2 or 3 people who do that
Ill probably choose a school where doing an internal transfer is the most streamline
Like uchicago is currently #1 on my list because they dont have specific “colleges” within the school
like i'd only do this path if you want CMU to be more a backup
If you actually wanna go to cmu, apply SCS
I wouldnt call CMU a backup but it’s def not my top 3 choice
yeah
You're not doomed
I would prob choose cmu over public flagships tho
A lot of college apps is based on fit
I have a pretty big olympiad background but at the same time SCS is just too competitive
I really dont wanna risk yfm
MCS is ~20% and SCS is ~6%
And the applicant pool for SCS is prob even more cracked
Going in with a major you don't want to do expecting to transfer to SCS is already a big risk
Ill apply to cmu as a backup
Cmu scs is way too risky
Mcs is the most realistic path for me
If it's a backup, what's the harm in not doing SCS
Did you read this document
I skimmed it yeah
Well mcs is more of a backup because the admit rate is pretty high
I wouldnt call scs a backup at all
Getting into cmu for scs is basically getting into an ivy rd
I’m applying to 25 schools
ngl use some other school as your backup
College apps have entropy in them
I know plenty of people who didn't get into Georgia tech but got into cmu scs
But it’s also super random because i literally know someone who got into cornell RD but not CMU scs ed
with usaco and olympiad stuff you already make a pretty good candidate, cmu loves yall
Also lowk physics isn't even really a cs-adjacent major
I have a pretty good phys oly background
Most people ik who thought SCS would be too hard go into like ece, math, statml, etc
I don't think Cornell and cmu SCS are that different in how competitive they are
^^^
your likely to have plenty of other backups, just aim high for scs ngl
After getting deferred from cornell engineering i really dont want to risk applying straight for the #1 major
Like i felt distraught for a week after that
frankly its not a risk, more an opportunity
From what I have heard, the transfer process is hard but still very possible tho
I got rejected from Cornell bro and I didn't even apply engineering 😭
It’s fine bro
Though my essays showed that I hated Cornell lowk
My college counselor convinced me that I should apply as an planetary science major/ physics for alls chools
Most people give up on transferring lol
Dang
I said no to planetary science because i dont fit that at all but
There is a pretty good alignment w physics
Usa physics olympiad and other research that aligns w physics
I had meteorology research as my #1 ec but didn't apply to meteorology 💔
Why not
Because I wanted to do CS lol
U applied as a cs major for all schools?
Yeah
yeah pretty much all my ecs were random CS things, but i applied ece regardless
I think I had like 1 or 2 cs ecs
And i have nightmares of getting rejected everywhere
You'll be fine just apply to what you actually wanna do
Don't worry about the outcome too much
Idm being a physics major but ill never find a job lmao
i think you're being a little too risk averse
If you're good at olys, you'll prob be fine wherever you go too
what is ece
electrical engineering?
hi guys i was wondering if internal transfer from cmu dietrich to mcs is hard
Where in MCS exactly?
Electrical and computer engineering
math
i see
Is Dietrich from IS?
economics
Econ is in tepper?
economics is in dietrich.
rip wasn't there like a bum 800 word essay
650 essay for cas
i got deferred 🙃
fr. and its a "why us" one too
they need a bunch of glaze
I don't even remember
i hate that essay
why r they telling us to write a second commonapp essay
Can someone help me decide between Discrete Math and Logic (Mathematical Sciences specialization, in the College of Science) or Logic and Computation (Philosophy specialization, Dietrich)?
Pros for Discrete Math and Logic:
-More depth electives in math, as far as I can tell.
-Harder math courses, if I'm understanding correctly
-Mathematical Sciences probably looks better on a resume
-Not sure how gen-eds work but I'm only interested in very specific humanities (philosophy and linguistics) so College of Science might be a better fit?
Pros for Logic and Computation:
-I do like philosophy and linguistics a lot tho and want to minor in linguistics, so Dietrich might be a better fit?
-Admit rate higher
i cant lie bro from how I see it 4>2
i am completely unsure about 3 of the 4 points, they are pure speculation and i am asking for someone to confirm/deny if they are true
if you like philosophy just do the philosophy ones
so logic and computation?
yeah
aight thanks
Are you at CMU yet 💀
i assume not, because "admit rate higher" is a factor
Are you more interested in philosophy or math
You can take the philosophy courses as a math major too btw
Dietrich courses are basically open to everyone
so i'm operating off assumptions here but I'm more interested in the other stuff the department of philosophy has to offer (that being linguistics, formal logic stuff, category theory) and less interested in "pure" philosophy (ethics and such) but still somewhat interested.
when it comes to math i'm mostly only interested in discrete math and stuff that intersects with theoretical cs and/or philosophy (i.e. logic, automata, data structures, category theory, game theory etc) and not too interested in higher pure math beyond that (i.e. analysis).
my main concerns are to do with Dietrich's gen ed compared to College of Science, acceptance rates, and how the degree will look on a resume
I think you should still do math
Like I don't think many people refer to category theory as a philosophy course even though it's in that department
And plenty of math majors take category tjeory
yea i suppose i could just apply college of science and consider a linguistics minor
submitted my app
hi guys
Should you only submit 2 letters of rec to CMU
any tips for essay 3
Because they only read 2 right?
?
yes
they won't read the third?
there is no harm in sending if u have one tho?
even though common app allows it?
because i have one better rec
so yeah
i dont want them to spend time
mostly not
on the other rec i guess
submitted my app yesterday 🤧
hi, would anyone be willing to review my cmu essays 🙏
are you a HS junior? Seems kinda early to write
i forgot to update he roll 💀... i am senior
does the cmu portal allow u to send resumes or research abstracts chat?
no
dang it
how do you answer the additional info question?
I was told to just write about something you haven't shown yet. Like for me, im writing about community service there because it was important to my app
is it okay if you structure it like a story?
or does it have to be straightforward more like a uc essay?
looking at the examples, it seems i can put my community essay here
but not sure
i dont think theres a "right" CMU way
I tell a story, but within the story there's lessons i learn, what i do ,etc.
mm i see
is half of the essay story and the other half about cmu?
or like what youve learned
UC essays at least imo are more like here's what i did, here's what i felt, here's what ill do and way less "creative" imo
im not even sure you need to for this
does "tell us, dont show us" mean no stories or is it chill
stories are fine, they just don’t want links to stuff
That's what I did
Well my diversity essay
Its basically an open space for any essay you want
One that shows smth that the other essays haven't already showed
Don't overthink it
got it, but my community essay's last paragraph is like "at [college], i plan to do the same, taking advantage of ..." so do you think its chill if i still add specifics for cmu
how did you write it tho
like
do you write it like a normal essay
or say like say it directly
also by Tell us, don’t show us do they mean just abt the no website links etc or the writing style aw like tell, not show
Yeah sure
Lowk I decided to apply to CMU on the day the application was due so I just copy pasted 3 other essays
Normal essay
did u say show something throughout or like explain why you want to emphasize it
idk
They just don't want people putting links to portfolios or smth
I didn't modify that essay at all from my other schools 💀
It's just a space to put another essay which shows another part of you
dNG WHAT
same bro
i applied the night before the deadline
WHAT
i made a template essay to submit to all the schools that covered the why us part
and a few other templates
cool
my template was kinda shit looking back at it but apparently it worked!
lowkey that makes me feel like bad if ive been working on it and planning to apply for a long time and i dont get in
i’m absolutely not saying to use my method, in fact i advise against it
it’s really good to spend time on the essays
and produce something you’re proud of
yes precisely im not, i got deferred ed
ok good
and i didnt particularly produce smth i was proud of
looking back
my writing got better
Nah college decisions are so random
I didn't really want to go to CMU when I applied
Then I researched more after I got in and liked it
i wanted to go to uf originally
but then got denied
so now i’m here
😭
you’ll find a good majority of the school didnt want to originally come to cmu
i absolutely love it here
but originally i didn’t want to come
i didnt know much abt it then i loved it while applying then i became nonchalant when after i got deferred
fair
it has a lot of pros and a lot of cons
mostly the food
i fucking hate the dining halls after a semester
compared to pitt
i like my food
Is that abp and hunan
or my personal favorite: pizza place that raises the price for lunch vs dinner but gives the same amount of food
yes
It's cuz if you search up CMU, you see so much hate
ppl just get mad about the amount of work then cry online
Abp is good, hunan is mid
Wait lowk I don't pay attention to prices
Is this crisp n crust or the edge
edge
It's always 2 slices per block though right
10 dollars vs 13.50 dollars for 2 slices
pretty sure
i hate chartwells
cmu kids after taking weed out courses
Lmao
Cmu is like the goat of all enginnering universities
- Many students pursue college for a specific degree, career opportunity or personal goal. Whichever it may be, learning will be critical to achieve your ultimate goal. As you think ahead to the process of learning during your college years, how will you define a successful college experience? (300 word maximum)
this essay shouldnt connect to past stuff right?
or should it
this is like a Psuedo-Why CMU essay
hmm
its quite broad and step-back kind of thing
i mean from what i've read online at least, like you should talk about "Why Cmu" in it while tslking about what you mean by succesful
hello all, was wondering if SCS considers your intended major during admissions? ie would they be looking at pure cs vs comp bio the same during admissions or nah
yo quick question but how difficult is transferring between schools? considering applying dietrich as profile fits better but would want to transfer to tepper
122, intro to ece, intro to engineering and public policy
3 big ones
wait @cedar turret if u know the answer u can answer too sorry for ping 🙏 deciding between major to apply as rn
i don’t think they do but i’m not cs
it depends on the school, typically it’s easy as long as you’re getting good grades and they have space
They don't
I applied comp bio but I'm doing CS now (might do addl in comp bio though)
okay igu
i heard some schools are mad comp for transfer which is why i was asking
it all depends on the space they have
like IS is hard to transfer to due to the lack of space
so they have very high standards
you do not have the right here to transfer like some schools where you can change your major on the portal
it’s all dependent on the space they have, supply and demand
Not sure about Tepper but generally avoid trying to game admissions and just apply to the major you wanna actually fo
You don't wanna be stuck
But I feel like not that many people transfer out if classes are hard?
So the notion of a weed out is really different from other schools
is it just me or are the CMU prompts like extremely copypastable from other schools and UCs
it is
i just copy and pasted
is this for econ lol but wanna do finance
cuz im also kinda thinking abt tha t
like the thing with me is that i'm hella interdisciplinary but ultimately want to end up in some sort of consulting if i don't get into the startup space
Yeah I also just copy pasted
if i had to answer a legit "why major" for business admin i think i'd perish
bc imho business admin is a dumb major 💀
like idk how someone can be passionate about it
they can talk about like omg the impact it can have on communities through community serivce
but that's not a true passion for the major itself
if that makes sense
Then it's not the major for you 💀
yeah but if im going into consulting like i kinda have to go into business LOL
i think what he says makes perfect sense for business admin
Wait but surely tepper has other majors
yeah thats what i was thinking for applying for
Idk anything about Tepper or business lmao
literally only has business admin
like
i love how wharton has econ
if you understand the people that go into business admin, you really notice people just use it as a means to an end
its actual grounded education and application
nobody cares about the major itself
exactly ^^ !
i love learning itself i feel like anything is applicable to impact if you choose it ot be
Oh 💀
learning about how businesses run and stuff is like stupid imo
😭
i say this as someone who will try and break into consulting
Surely you could write a application-focused essay
also isn't ts due tmrw
yeah i totally could but i was thinking about writing that for my third lol i have a good story for my basis for application
yeah
ive written last minute for so long lol its bad
yea i decided to choose tepper
😮💨
oh really
its cuz like i didnt wanna rewrite my thing that i stole from econ in the other schools
💀
so i just moved some stuff around
🥀
Lol I decided to apply on the due date
wait
why would a cs major not apply cmu 💀
does variance actually exist between schools in cmu
for like selectivity
ik cornell is decentralized so theres a LOT of vriance
Influenced by hate online + cost
but idk as much for cmu
😮💨
also wait sansk do you do usaco
Yeah
I feel like i've seen the name before
I'm silver
I might've talked to you on my other account
You prob have
other acc lol
i've heard both tepper and dietrich are less selective than the school overall but do you have any insight on how selective they are relative to each other
I think tepper is more selective but idk?
oh shit
Dietrich is very flexible though if you want that
Like there's so many majors and it's really easy to switch between them
I'm getting doxxed if I use my main on a2c
my gh profile has my real name n everything
😭
yeah most cas schools are that makes sense
I'm not sure CMU hides a lot of the admissions process
yeahh thats what im trying to figure out rn
cmu is fairly transparent
Like they burn all the applications after admissions are over
from 2020 the data says tepper is much less selective than dietrich but that's when they stopped publishing
i thikn 23% vs 13%
So that no one can request their college application
iirc this is illegal?
Oh no sorry
you have to be able to recieve whatever they have on you
ya boi has no clue
so by burning it they avoid FERPA
Yeah but they destroy all of it
yeah
i mean i think id still do tepper regardless
So you can ask and they'll just say they don't have anything
idek if i wanna be in dietrich
they release comprehensive numbers tho
🥲
lol i'd be fine with dietrich for a semester
or year
i just need to get to consulting.. eventually
transfer tho is that harder
dunno
Lowk idk anyone who wants to transfer to tepper
how closed off is the tepper environment/resources from other schools
i'm guessing bc tepper is less selective it's also like
not as private
but i mean doing econ is shared
compared to wharton and its resources compared to other schools within penn
Not that much idt
There's plenty of cs majors in the entrepreneurship frat
i think im gonna go dietrich econ
And startup resources anyone can access
i'm assuming dietrich and tepper have similar first-year classes for econ at the minimum
probably
so i won't be like
too excluded from the environemnt
if internal transfer does work out
why are there two econ majors anyways
You can check this 💀
I know nothing about cmu except SCS for forgive my ignorance
no its one but its shared classes at tepper and dietrich
But CMU has a lot of separation lol
Like there's different comp bio classes for bio majors and comp bio majors
💀
For stats, there's a CS version, math version, and a stats version
Of the same class
😭😭
Allows them to customize the classes more to the audience I think
I feel like that works against students though
I mean you can take any version in most cases
You have the choice to take the stats major version of stats as a CS major for example
???
this is so weird
like i knew this before but tis just so weird and im exclaiming it now
economics is housed in "tepper" for the actual CMU site
but you can't select it on commonapp
lowk can i email cmu
would they get back to me by tmorrow
lol
yea lol
no because they moved econ to dietrich
but u still share with tepper
idk i was like trying to figure that out earlier too
at least on reddit
wat
that they moved it from dietrich to tepper
yes
i saw
its just like
when im applying as commonapp i can't choose econ in tepper
which is stupid
im still gonna email them tbh
lmk what they say 🥲
wait lemme get this straight
first supp is why major and i can just copy and paste
second is why us?
third i just probably copy and paste from somewhere too
third u can just write whatever right
lowk might just use that first stanford prompt again
Can i write like literally anything in q3
like paste a community essay
or do i have to show another facet of personallity that i havent covered in Q1 & Q2
Pretty much
It is optimal if you do that
Otherwise the essay kinda useless
so do i have to do something not major-related?
the first two are p much fully like that so im not sure how much more insight another 300 words would give
Anything that adds more about you
where is this why major essay
Wdym where
Stanford isn’t the only school in applying to dawg
imagine someone who did that tho
Ego
i assumed as much but i just saw you
For the Why Major and Why CMU essays, is it ok if they kinda build off of each other with a bit of overlap. Like my Why major is about my research in an area, and my Why CMU talks about exploring that research at CMU
Stanfords my safety fr
That's fine as long as theres not much repetition
Like my why major was about using computer vision to research one project, and then the start of my Why CMU is about using CV for another project that then leads into a specific lab, resources
Is that too repetitive in your opinion?
its so bad i got yieled protected
i have the same essay but am applying to information systems cuz cs is too competitive and I still want to get into carnegie bc it's a beautiful campus. I don't really see a difference between the two but I believe information systems is more data-driven and making informed decisions and less theory heavy
Im doing SCS Human-Computer interaction and A
smart move tho
Gl
u too man
iirc you can change majors within SCS fairly easily
so you get admitted to SCS as a whole
Well you don't enter with a major 💀
I don't have a major yet
I think the technicality is you default to CS unless you apply to something different
same
is CMU Tepper or econ more selective?
U do for coe
For enginnering u enter with a major
It's on the cmu website
How’d u do the ideal college experience essay tho
calling rn
for anyone who is interested:
college acceptanace rates will be the same across the board apart from CS and some drama programs. they're pushing hard on that this year.
economics is initially funneled through dietrich but goes into tepper; this is simply administrative in nature to allow for BA's as well as BS's (although imho this is kinda dumb)
internal transfer is very easy at cmu; between schools also isn't extremely difficult from how she sounded
uhh who was asking about this
@hushed mist
im actually very surprised by how open they were with information
i offhandedly brought up admission rates between schools and she was the one to volunteer information, i didn't even ask
i'm like "oh i'v eheard and seen online that some schools have varying acceptance rates, which is why i was confused.." and she took that and elaborated on it
internal transfer between what
which schools
