2. many companies offer stuff u can apply for so it might seem crazy, but they aren’t directly working w these companies. many was just a product grant, like ik for microsoft azure grant for npos is an example
3. news outlets like to get clicks. the kid is doing something good on the community so it’s only natural -> cold outreach to be featured locally -> warmer rep for natl / get on radar of bigger names
4. research is research. i’m sure this person is doing great acclaimed work. context is important tho. like “three international countries” just say 3 countries bru

admitting based on test scores leads to a lot of problems realistically and colleges are really trying to avoid that. Because yeah China's admissions system is simple. At what cost? Student suicide rates are sky high, they've created one of the largest education/tutoring industries in the world, kills students childhoods, hinders innovation, and they set their students up for poor mental health for the rest of their lives

This is further seen in both Japan and Korea's admission systems which are equally as bad but on a smaller scale

East Asia largely probs just does it bc it originates so far back in their history to days of Confucianism. At the scale they're at it's too difficult to really change things even if they want to, which many do

the problem with doing a pure test-based entrance system is you lose a lot of nuance. also, unless you or anybody else here is a secret genius, we collectively are all probably going to have mediocre scores on said test-based entrance system and you went from having a low chance with the holistic system to no chance because you scored a few points under the threshold for a school you wanted to go to.

also, i'd much rather be judged on a collection of my words/thoughts, small random fun enjoyable things i did, and the bonds i built with my teachers, rather than sitting and studying meaningless questions for 10 hours a day for a test.

its not about what you want, there are hundreds of thousands of applicants, you NEED to be measured in a measurable tangible way that clearly makes it understandable on why one gets accepted, no ones want people to get accepted based on how much they do community service or how good their essays are thats not what its about. Its about finding the brightest, most acheiving, and the best fit. What you achieved and accomplished throughout highschool SHOULD ALWAYS take precedence over personal fit and community service, after that should be community service/personal fit to screen if someone would succeed on your campus, as LONG as your gpa and sat score are acceptable. Its a meritocracy not a charity event, there are thousands of students who worked their ass off to get into these colleges, although you might also be extremely intelligent, emotionally intelligent, and forward thinking, if you have nothing showing for it, or not as much showing for it as the next person, you do not deserve to get in.
