during the summer you dont have school, you dont have hours of homework or exams to study for, you dont have regularly scheduled after school activities. if theres a hobby you really enjoy you have more time to do it during the summer. it can be academic. maybe you really enjoy math so you bought some books in a math subject youre interested in that your school doesnt teach and read up on them. but it can also not be academic. maybe you really enjoy nature but unironically dont have grass touching time during the school year so you encouraged your family to visit a national park or you volunteered at a local beach clean up and went surfing on some other spare days.

i personally dont think the question is going to make or break your admission but i do think its a good opportunity to show parts of your life even if small that you cared about during high school that may not fit on a traditional college app

So it depends on the interviewer. Mine happened to like photography as well so we talked a lot about it and then we also dived into some of my VEX project and some coding projects. Again my recommendation is to just have some ideas of some ECs that you really like doing.

So my interviewer was a chemical engineering major while I plan on doing aerospace. We DID discuss some things about robotics but again he mainly was gauging my problem solving abilities (from what I noticed) and I showed him some of my sketches/AutoCad sketches but I never really went deep into theory.

It’s luck to an extent with these bc even if a bunch of alumni happen to live in your local area they could be very busy alumni who aren’t able to do many interviews
