idk if this is a crazy take and plz correct me if im wrong but I feel like people overstate the academic credentials you need to get into a top school

because I think the reason the gpas and sat are so high for yale admits is bc its a very self selecting group of people

in order to get into yale u need to have a substantial impact on a community

hs kids who are doing that work are more than likely not doing poorly in school

like yes u need to do decent in hs to be competitive for yale

but also like I dont think you NEED a near perfect transcript

its just that the kids who apply and thus get in bc they are a good fit generally have that as a by product

this is either a horrible take or one that is very well known

i think most that apply have a pretty good GPA to begin with (3.75-8+) and in some aspects pass the first threshold of consideration when reviewed by AOs. i think a big part of fit doesn't just come from your community but your baseline ability to perform well with difficult coursework (most frosh get humbled by coursework at yale with the exception of those who came from prep schools, etc)

an admissions officers main job is to take compelling candidates to commitee and pitch them (either to get other AOs takes because the candidate is borderline or because they wanna advocate for them). if you're a compelling candidate within your international pool you're compelling and you'll be discussed

anythign besides that (admit rates, etc) don't really matter bc this whole thing was never a numbers game anyway

this especially applies to SCEA i think since they're trying to get the core class built up

class shaping probably occurs more in RD (the diversity thing you were talking about)

the huge increase in acceptance rate is from recruited athletes

your personal odds of getting in are probably equal no matter if you apply REA or RD -- if you're borderline in REA they'll just defer the decision (note yale's low deferral rate here)

tbh its probably better to apply to something that gives a meaningful advantage, like an ED program

if you live in (no offence) a poorer country there will be very few yale alumni there -- so few/no interviews

the only meaningful interview is an AO interview and those are rare

theres no point in obsessing over interviews this much. also this notion that getting an interview means ur in the running vs not getting it means ur an auto reject is probably not true.

im pretty sure it genuinelly just means that the don't need information from you for your app. interviews are used to test personal qualities and intellectual curiosity/depth of thought but sometimes a file on top of having competitive ECs, grades, LORs, etc. displays all of those qualities in a substantive way

the sample size of the survey was a 4th of yale's class size so there could be more ppl who didnt get interviews and got in.

if we assume that to be true for the whole class (90% got interview) it still does kind of make sense.

9000/52000 applicants get an interview but this is split across SCEA and RD, and most applicants in RD just aren't that competitive to begin with. so an interview might not be necessary for them since yale knows that it wont help. in scea hte appilcant pool is much stronger (and i assume that at least half of the pool gets interviewed or something due to that because a lot of applicants are competitive in SCEA
