Hi, I’m considered out-of-state for tuition as a U.S. citizen. Still, my situation is similar to an international student since I don’t live in the U.S. I’m currently torn between these two schools—it's a 50/50 decision for me. I have a meeting scheduled with Oregon’s advisor for more clarity, but in the meantime, I want to feel more confident in my choice.

Extra notes:

  • My high school has a larger population and a very big community! So I care about it, even if it's just sports games, rushing, etc!

Schools: University of Oregon vs Michigan State University
Intended Major: Environmental Science
Similarities:

  • Similarly Priced -> out of state
  • Emphasis on Fieldwork & Research
  • Both have Strong sense of Community
  • Roughly same price for out of state
  • Good sports teams for both!

University of Oregon

UO Pros:

  • Studying along PNW
  • Mild Weather
  • Smaller student body
  • Seen campus in person

UO Cons:

  • Schools reputation is lesser recognised (esp in sg)
  • Less diversity
  • Fewer Internship oppurtunities
  • Not a big fan of the campus location..

Michigan State University

MSU Pros:

  • Top ranked environmental science program
  • Academically better ^
  • More globally recognised
  • Larger international community

MSU Cons:

  • Never been to Michigan
  • Less coastal science based, compared to uo
  • Pricey as a non-michigan resident
  • Colder weather (in comparison to sg)

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Community
  • Opportunities after University
  • Student Life on Campus?

@grim egret i would lean michigan state here since you said it has a stronger program and better name recognition back home

#

both schools are like extremely similar in terms of campus life/community, being big state schools in college towns with good sports teams
