Schools: The Ohio state university and Purdue
Intended major: Genetics
Similarities: Similar weather, both are large public universities, both have good research and networking opportunities.

The Ohio state university
School 1 Pros:

  1. Dorms and food seem pretty good
  2. I like the location
  3. Campus culture seems pretty chill
  4. Ranked #37 for biological sciences (couldn't find the ranking for genetics)
  5. Guaranteed housing for 2 years
  6. My HL IB credits transfer so i can skip 3 courses (not sure if that's a significant pro)

School 1 Cons:

  1. Very large campus, doesn't seem very walkable.
  2. OOS student so i'm not guaranteed the same tuition for all 4 years
  3. Seems to have a large party scene (i'm not big on that atm)
  4. High crime rate

Purdue
School 2 Pros:

  1. Academics seem to be top tier
  2. Campus seems rlly nice and walkable
  3. Cost remains constant
  4. Food seems to be pretty good
  5. From what I've heard the campus culture seems rlly nice and ik some people who study there.

School 2 Cons:

  1. Didn't like the dorms and not guaranteed housing after freshman year.
  2. Heard its comparatively more academically rigorous/grade deflation from day 1 compared to other universities.
  3. West Lafayette seems kinda boring.
  4. Heard that health related resources are bad (i think that's in all public unis though? Not sure)

Tiebreaking considerations: Overall campus culture/friendliness, academic resources, international student related stuff

we have our in house purdue genetics expert :D

#

u can ask tay anything in the purdue channel

#

but the dorms arent bad, you could get unlucky and get one of the 2 rly bad ones, but the rest of them are decent or better

#

some of them, like hilly or msouth are actually really really nice

#

and if ur not a guy, then u cant get the bad ones, since those are male only

#

the housing situation is kinda annoying, but everyone i know that wanted on campus housing next year, got it, and didnt get the bad dorms
and it should be better next year since theyre underenrolling hella

#

the grade deflation is very annoying tho, classes are harder than they need to be for no reason

so worst case i think the worst ones for u are wiley or meredith, and they arent that bad

lyric crypt
#

Seen tark on a yt vid n YIKES
havent seen meredith but wiley looked alright if its considered the worst

pastel pilot
#

and then probably the best dorm on campus imo, meredith south (different from meredith), is womens only, so theres a solid chance u get that

omg it’s my time to shine

pastel pilot
#

so the housing issue shouldnt be rly that big of an issue for u i would guess

grand needle
#

i genuinely couldn’t be better suited to answer this question

pastel pilot

i was wondering whether i should ping u

grand needle

im in my lab but ill be back

#

this was my final decision so trust i get it

but im not sure about the market/search process for genetics

#

tay would def be able to answer that

lyric crypt

Fair enough

pastel pilot

and shes hella smart so she def will know what shes talking about more than me

lyric crypt

Lol i’ll wait for her response then, thnx for the info abt the dorms

ohhhhhh i didnt know that, ty for letting me know

# lyric crypt Do u think this affects internship opportunities? Cuz Purdue is on the slightly ...

Based on my knowledge it would not. Ive heard that OSU bio classes are on similar levels of deflation/rigour so if you're going to struggle in one you'll likely struggle in both (I have many friends at OSU).

Location wise OSU might be a bit better for internship opportunities (big city vs rurual), however my bio friends here all have research and my bio friends from back home seem to be lacking a bit (although it could be luck/selection bias)

#

the housing situation is seemingly getting a handle as well, i have not heard greart things about many osu dorms, and they, like purdue and every other university out there it feels like is struggling with a housing crisis.

osu is a tossup because rent in a big city post your guarenteed years in UR or you could get lucky and maybe get reasonable rent in a suburb whereas all rent in purdue area is far higher than it really has any reason to be 💀

#

do your HL IB credits not transer to purdue?

# grand needle Based on my knowledge it would not. Ive heard that OSU bio classes are on simila...

Good to know, i assumed no other uni would be at the same purdue rigour level (like in this tier of unis) since i’ve only ever heard ppl mentioning grade deflation while talking abt purdue lol.

Hmm okay, i’ll look into the research aspect as well while deciding since research is a major factor for me.

In terms of dorms i havent heard anything firsthand just seen yt videos and the referred to the website which i suppose can be deceiving and they def looked better than purdue but tbf thats like one of my factors its not my main one. My main worry with purdue is not getting on campus housing since i wont have a car which would make off campus housing complicated and expensive (my college budget is already maxed out at like 41-42k max)

Thats totally understandable. I do know that there are many off campus apartments on bus lines which can help but I've not lived off campus so i dont feel I can fully speak about that. I know when I toured OSU the dorm they showed was pretty small (not the smallest I'd seen) but it did seem like an overall nice building so I'll give it that.

Truthfully, for me the final factors between the two were

  1. safety
  • felt very unsafe walking around OSU during my tour, even with my parents. i've lived in columbus my whole life too so it wasn't some like 'first time in big city' situation
  1. i wanted to be forced to branch out/adult
  • i was worried if I went to OSU i would use the crutch of being so close to home and not make friends/learn how to be truly self sufficient

ive learned about protein structure in each of my bio classes, hardy weinberg in 3/4, mitosis/meisosis in all 4, etc

Oh okay thats pretty basic we’ve def covered it in ib

grand needle
#

and theres more content ofc but like

#

you would be just fine imo

#

the most funky thing we did was some plant anatomy 💀

But if you have any questions about purdue at all im defo here to help and my scope with OSU is more limited but I can 100% talk about general campus vibes, and the area that is columbus

I think if you dont want a party school you'd be fine with either
