Intended major: Computer Science (wanting an MBA & related Master's/PhD in the future)
Similarities: Accepted to both honors colleges, comparable net price (no scholarships released), active campus life, construction projects galore, comparable cs program quality

University of Florida
School 1 Pros:

  • Prestigious reputation, especially outside FL—stronger national and international recognition
  • More traditional college-town vibe
  • Larger alumni network(?)
  • FOOTBALL!!! 🏈

School 1 Cons:

  • Doesn't have the same level of opportunities for internships/urban life as Orlando does
  • Limited internship opportunities locally
  • Housing crisis???

University of Central Florida
School 2 Pros:

  • ORLANDO 💜 more things to do off-campus
  • Excellent internship opportunities, I literally work at a company that has a site 5 minutes from campus
  • Gorgeous dorms with no communal bathrooms
  • The proximity to Orlando's tech industry is crazy + the partnerships with multiple companies... insane.
  • More modern campus because it is 100yrs+ younger than UF smile

School 2 Cons:

  • Prestige is more limited to Florida/Southeast US
  • Heard the large campus makes it harder to stand out

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Need to visit UF, dorms included. I've had a lot more opportunities to visit UCF and learn more about their programs and UF has not gotten the same attention.
  • UF's prestige OR Orlando?? Hard choice.
  • UF's research is presumably better for getting into grad school because of it's prestige, but unsure.
  • How disruptive is the construction on either campus....??

Addendum: Proximity to opportunities and entertainment, love energy but overall quieter campus, balance of academics, research, experience, and i NEED to be grad school ready so higher gpa and LORs are a need

speaking from experience going to school in tallahassee (even more remote than gainesville...) i honestly dont think a school's location should be a big hinderance

#

for the internship side of things, the vast majority of your internship work will be done over the summer, meaning school location doesnt get in the way... we had an amazon recruiter come all the way from san francisco to fsu, and you may be interested in opportunities in other big cities besides orlando

i guess that does leave during the year stuff, but being in the university honors program at UF youll almost certainly have first pickings at anything offered on campus, plus a resume boost for the various jobs in and around gainesville

#

for personal location stuffs: if you have a car orlando is a fairly easy weekend trip to make from gainesville. if not, there's the redcoach bus service (which i take home from tallahassee back to orlando) that drops you off by the airport and you can uber about from there

UF's academic and research potential, especially in the honors college, outweighs UCF's for sure, and i think most people will prefer UF's more traditional land-grant campus feel over UCF, even if its a bit more rustic

# slate sequoia big state school and better for cs

ty for commenting! they're both big state schools and i think the cs programs are pretty similar (put that in the similarities section). is there something more standout about uf or is it just prestige?
