Northeastern vs. NYU:
Intended major: Mechanical Engineering or Biochemistry/Forensic Science
Similarities:
- Located within the hearts of their respective cities (east coast)
- Incredible co-op/internship opportunities
- Strong research opportunities with faculty?
- Cost of living is high for both schools
Northeastern
Northeastern Pros:
- Co-op program: incredible opportunities to gain work experience in your intended field of study
- 40 minute commute from home, which I don't mind making later on when I am an upperclassman
- Very easy to switch majors even across schools
Northeastern Cons:
- Co-op program: Unless you take extra classes during the summer, graduating within 4 years is very hard.
- Need-Aware: although they do promise to meet 100% of demonstrated need
NYU
NYU Pros:
- Brand name: world class reputation in terms of research and internship opportunities within the city
- Engineering school is improving at a rapid rate every year (from what i've heard?)
- Unparalleled networking opportunities
NYU Cons:
- No Campus: Yeah, you know exactly what i mean.
- Weak engineering program: despite a rise in reputation, it's often overshadowed by Stern, Tisch, CAS, etc. Though this may be a pro as Tandon acceptance rates are said to be around 30-40%
- Very hard to switch majors (esp into top schools like Stern, which requires you to have a near perfect gpa to even be considered for an internal transfer)
Tiebreaking considerations:
- I am FGLI, so my financial need status plays a big role in which college to apply ED2
- Currently deferred from Northeastern ED1, so depending on their percentage of deferred students + their outcome on ED2, maybe it gives me a boost in ED2 considerations? (unless they defer everyone like schools like Harvard or Princeton))
- The goal is to get in to the school, the major I study isn't that important as long as it has some relevancy towards my intended major
