Hi everyone! Yall could call me willy. I'm a registered nurse and I graduated with my bachelor's in nursing May of 2024.
A little bit about my journey
I graduated high-school in 2020 and I ended up applying to only one college, University of Texas at El Paso. I didn't want to move away from my family just yet and needed their support. When I first started attending college, I was a neuroscience major on the premed track. However, since it was COVID times I already felt that my med school application was going to lack greatly compared to other applicants. I ended up switching to nursing two weeks before the start of the fall semester of my sophomore year. Luckily, I was able to get the classes I wanted. After I finished my prereqs, I applied to the 2nd phase of my university's nursing program which included three classes: intro to nursing, pharmacology, and pathophysiology. During this semester, I ended up struggling greatly with my mental health which ended with a silent attempt. I did end up failing pharmacology which prevented me from registering for the next classes. Fortunately, I was able to receive professional help and prescribed medications. I repeated pharmacology and pathophysiology the next semester and was able to get into the 3rd phase of the nursing program. From there, I still hit some bumps with my mental health but was able to graduate in May of this year. I took the NCLEX in June and was able to pass my first try in 85 questions.
Where I am now
I started my first nursing job in a trauma level II hospital on a cardiac PCU/stepdown unit that also serves as the designated stroke unit. I care for the population that are too sick for the medical floor but not sick enough for the intensive care unit. Later, I do plan to move to the ICU once I get more comfortable and feel ready to handle the higher acuity. I also plan to get my Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner certification later down the road as well.
I'm open to answering any questions yall have
