tbh I thought getting a decent well paying full stack job (albeit not a prestigious one) to help aid my family, working on Google projects, other large projects used globally by nearly all user IoT devices as well as smaller ones, leading development teams, despite not having access to research programs helping to correct academic work, and personally helping out by mentoring which is backed by a recommendation letter + 4.0 UW when converted from a 100 point system and decent course rigor for math & CS would be enough to get me a deferral
but I guess not

A significant portion of my dev work was unique open source work on large projects too just because I like it
maybe it was the lack of awards because I decided to apply sideways

I have no clue what the other Rice students did, but if it's not luck and the competition is this fierce I'm probably just going to have to go to my state flagship
It's probably going to be the most affordable option anyways and decently ranked for CS so at least I got that going for me

Hi, Ive seen a couple of your messages over the past 48 hours and I just wanted to give you a piece of my mind. I 1000% understand where you are coming from and the emotional turmoil you must have gone through during these past few hours. You have every right to feel confused, hurt, and questioned. I completely understand. I know you would want to know what you could have done differently, I know you want to measure yourself up against other students who got deferred/got in. This is all very normal.

one of my friends applied to stanford REA, she was impressive, just like you! Great grades, great ECs - she was a competitive applicant. Although she is international, she did not seek any aid. We all thought she had a good chance - at the bare minimum we thought she would get deferred. She ended up getting rejected. She stalked the Stanford 2029 instagram page religiously over the entirety of our winter break to the point where it heavily compromised her studying, resting, vacationing, and mental health. She would compare herself to all those that got in and think "Wow, I had much better stats/SAT scores than she/he did, why didnt i get in?"

This is all very justified, yet in the end, what you think is best for you may not end up being whats best. After all, we can only live our lives in the first-person perspective. We are not perceptive of the majority of things external to our lives and everything that surrounds it. We, unfortunately, do not have the ability to look 5, 10, 20 years into the future and deduct what the best options are for us.

Trust me, Ive been there!! I know what its like chasing after something you SO desperately want, and 10000% think that is the best option forward. I know the feelings, yet I am sending this message not only to you, but to all the students here to reassure you all that things DO and ALWAY WILL work out in the best ways possible. It might be hard to believe or to see right now, but what is meant for you will be yours

despite my jokes i am not an AO so i have no idea, i can speculate. i think they were just testing the waters with ED2 to gauge interest in the uni, rice is really focused on yield and expanding applications (inferiority complex). maybe had more applications than expected and wanted to leave room for the RD round. we spent the past 4 years actively expanding enrollment, but that’s cooled down now. i would expect RD to follow the general downward trend of selectivity — last year it was 7.5% — but i don’t think the ED2 results bode badly or anything. my guess is RD will hover around 6.5-7.5%

acceptance rates have been decreasing every year since 2020, that pattern isn’t a surprise. ED2 doesn’t mean it’ll be remarkably lower, in my opinion, but history suggests this year was always going to be another record-low

idk how applying ED2 would decrease your odds

It’s kinda locked in to a space, around it is the museum district and a gazillion dollar neighborhood

So they can’t really expand outward to increase student body, and I think (they think) their fine as they are

There is still plenty of space on campus and rice owns more land beyond the current campus anyhow, such as rice village.

Rice also has plenty of money, for example they almost bought bcm years ago before the deal fell through
