#University of Michigan (UMich) (2024-2025)
1 messages · Page 8 of 1
Lol wtf
But idk like how it's actually selected
Brutha ur cracked
Now I feel bad cuz I'll prolly go to Mich cuz a ton of ppl from my school are so I prolly just stole someone's Honors Carolina spot 😭
Assuming I don't bag like Yale
Yeah mich instate tuition is hard to pass up
Now that I have post prestige clarity I think Yale is on eof the only schools I'd go to over UMich
u got in right?
WWW
Yessir
Waiting on CS
But I lowkey dec
My mom made me apply to CS advanced selection
But like
I wasn't really too serious about Can't Shower anyways
i did the my scholarship profile thing and there were only like 2 checkboxes that applied to me 😭
Do you fill out that profile after you get admitted?
wait how do I log into wolverine access
you have to make a U-M friend account
then to go to my scholarship profile, go to "new and prospective student business" -> "new and prospective student center" -> bottom link in the financial aid section
Do the checkboxes mean you got something or is it just scholarships you can be considered for?
im just worried that it has a reputation for smut 💀
it's just stuff you select that qualifies you for consideration for certain scholarships
random question but does anyone know when the letter of continued interest is due?
doesn't mean you'll get them
march 1
thx
ah ok, ty
Yeah valid☠️
is this a sign
valorant is telling me write a loci
yes, write it.
GEs?
Probably gen eds
If that's the case, it varies by a lot
Like some Gen Ed classes are good, some are mid, some are bad
@rustic charm LMAO

Are there any for merit only
i have to get 3-legged jeans and i still got deferred 😕
I know lol
So never
In 6 months you'll get hard reset lol
Oh shi
U got it then
I'm lowkey guilty of trolling in comp sometimes
I peaked asc and I'm plat rn
I'm trying to get back but it's hard
Maybe I'll queue 6 hrs of dm like flor
Aim too inconsistent
Spamming dm surely must make my aim better though
Just Google it. Search up Ross major course guide or something
Same 💀
Think of it like this. Full time college student is 12 credits hours. Average is 15-16 credits. Average class is 3-4 credits.
Maximum credits for full time before it becomes over is 18
you could always say like ur trying hard to maintain your grades. i also think going into hyper specific detail about your plan at umich will help, at least i think it helped w me
Yep ^^
And also I feel like I haven't done much
But if I actually list it out
It sounds like I did a lot lol
yk it's bad when people say their grades "dropped" but it's just a b 😭
fr
ok so it doesnt matter 😭
bro thinks a B is the end oft he world
ur counselor is stupid
no offense
sweat ahh counselor
what even was the class
one time my counselor yelled at me for being at a beach with my family on a weekend when I was a SOPHOMORE smh
urm you will be fine
i avoided any of this kind of panic by avoiding any honors or ap english classes
lmaoo
my class gave me two weeks to finish three units of calc
i think u will be ok..
so mid.
calc stats and physics B-
then there's me majoring in something that most schools don't even have a major for x_x
hi
now you mentioned it what is it??
UX design
🥶
Yep applied there
though theres only 200 seats
I got into UNC info sci so I'm pretty happy with that
whats nice is that i can also go for their data science pathway in school of infomatics
but i thought unc doesnt admit by major or school
yeah
Ooh nice
i applied either cs or ece to all my schools but i don't have many good ecs
i have a high-impact and a low-impact one 🙂↕️
Ngl a lot of the time it's knowing how to sell your ECs
My ECs are not that impressive but they sound impressive lol
^^^ this
Dw you'll be okay
also this
didnt knew that was a thing and completely ruined my ea app
😭
Same lol
Dw fellow duke rejects unite
We'll get into great schools RD
hell yeah
I'm a UNC simp now 🩵
ok
ok
ok
Has anyone been able to access the LSA Honors application
i got postponed
Yea
accept defer reject
Admit Postpone Deny
Deny and postpone seem a little less harsh
Postpone is less harsh
womp womp. same here
peepee not long enough
i guess
ok
Is the NPC just wrong if you're out of state?
I'm confused
The estimated price I would pay doesn't change whether my status is in-state or out-of-state which can't be right
Nah it's usually accurate
What does the price exactly say
how do you check
Well there's a link if you search up the LSA Honors website but to access it you gotta make a umich friend account and verify it which takes 24-48 hours
And I think I did that but when I click on the link it just says "LSA Honors application is not currently available" so idk if my account just isn't finished verifying yet
mine's like 44k a year 😭
hopefully i end up getting more
i wanna see essay examples that aren’t a decade old
if anyone got in recently and is ok sharing their essays id greatly appreciate it
You might if you potentially get scholarships after getting admitted EA. You might not
But it's unfortunately the reality of being OOS
And for Michigan to be a public university, it means they're mainly responsible for the students in the state
i did NPC for each of my top schools and they're all around that range so i might just end up going to umich anyways
Be sure to take into consideration for upper division tuition. Some colleges, like COE, hike up crazy if you meet 55+ credits
minnesota is 42k, wisconsin is 48k, florida is 44k
does lsa do that
They do but it's less compared to COE. I would just google UMich tuition registrar
Uh, it depends on the person ig? But business programs tend to be gpa friendly.
the institutional grant i got was like 33k i think
via npc
if i get more that would be awesome
but idk how that'd work
Institutional grant is based on your need and sorta varies. It might be slightly more or might be the same, but I wouldn't expect it to increase like crazy
And I'm assuming you're able to afford the rest of the costs beyond aid?
You haven't talked with your family about this?
i have
And?
idk they say they'll support me but it's super vague
Did you show them the costs?
i've told them
It says 25k/year for tuition, housing, etc.
haven't showed them but i told them
I'm gonna need you to do yourself a favor and give a serious conversation, like an actual conversation that won't make them vague, regarding costs
But isn't there usually a price discrepancy between in-state and out-of-state?
Something like "they'll support you" is not a good sign. 9 times out of 10, parents that say similar responses seem to either think college would be cheaper or you'd just be able to pay it off through loans, believing loans aren't an issue
Mhm, are you in state or OOS?
how long does it take for the finaid packages to come out
I believe I got mine around February when I got admitted EA
i'll wait until the real thing comes out then
OOS
Or... start now. The earlier the better
This should be a consistent conversation to be talking about
Well I just did the NPC and already saw great discrepancies
My guess, you must've made a mistake on something
do they factor your family income relative to your state's cost of living or is it more general
not ross tho. with the ross curve, it's friendly?
From what I know, no.
well hopefully they have mercy
cause the only thing worse than being rejected from a school is being accepted and not being able to go because of costs
I agree
Aren't you able to appeal sometimes and ask for more aid, or does that barely work?
The curve distribution initially seems freaky but in reality Ross is a pretty joke of a school when it comes to academic difficulty. I don't exactly know what's going on, but vast majority of my Ross friends have told me that almost everyone in their classes tend to get either an A or B at lowest in general. On top of the fact that those classes, from what I've seen and what my friends told me, are not too difficult compared to other majors.
Also, it's still hard for me in understanding the curve. One of my friends said "they say 40% get an A but it doesn't exactly mean 40% will get an A".
I'll do it again and check
Yeah idk
I change I and my parents' residency to Michigan and it doesn't change
Ig I'll just see when I get my package
One other question about fin aid
The NPC factors in a $15k institutional scholarship but I haven't gotten anything (whereas the institutional grant is $40k)
So I'm not sure what that's about
I can share
thx man if u can dm it to me ill appreciate it
i just got in ea and i'd be willing to share
Sent in DMs
Are ppl applying for rd at a signifigant disadvantage vs people who applyed ea for umich
like do they take most ppl from ea round
Ignoring Ross since I'm still unsure of that, Michigan in their admissions website directly states that there's no preference between EA and RD
The only disadvantage I can think of is because of applying to RD, you wouldn't be considered for certain scholarships you potentially could have gotten if you applied EA
so i apply rd i basically have no chance for scholarships
You would still get financial aid. And you could still apply for other scholarships in the future if you attend here. But there are certain scholarships that are specific to EA
Any idea about if we get deferred EA?
I honestly have no clue and would advise emailing admissions for that. I originally thought no and I'm aware of some EA scholarships that had earlier deadlines that you wouldn't qualify, but now I'm unsure
Thanks
Honestly I'll be happy if I get in at all lol
So that's my main goal rn
I'll worry about scholarships later
Does anyone know what this is?
I've got no idea
For the ea scholarships would you automatically be considered for those if admitted or is there a separate scholarship application process for them?
You're automatically considered but there are some new student scholarships that have early deadlines
Can I also see yours?
I guess I'll find out in a few weeks 💀
I just don't understand why they factor in a scholarship already
Are the automatically considered ones mentioned in your letter?
Oh ok, will it come later with the financial aid package?
I’m confused do they not award scholarships right away?
Hi
congratulations, sure can u dm them?
You can potentially see them in your financial aid award when you get them
You don't get announced in your acceptance letter
Hmm what if I didn’t apply for aid am I just ineligible
Can you apply for lsa honors without accepting the u mich decision?
are there certain majors that are better for LSA honors than others? like if i wanna do film and english will the academic benefits be worth the application? they're not very research-heavy majors which is why i was wondering
I mean you're supposed to in order to be considered for all possible scholarships...
I think it’s too late lol
Plus I don’t have those forms done
wait is umich out?
The prompt is so weird
last year CS advanced selection came out at 3, exactly a week after decisions came out, so they'll probably be this Friday at 3pm est
Ikr lmao like analyzing ai 🤔
Lowkey nervous
Everyone at my school who's applied for cs has been accepted to advanced selection tho so hopefully it's fine
Sample size of 3 though lol
whens the deadline
There are rolling deadlines up until I think April 9 but the earlier you send the earlier you get a decision
Has anyone here got in Mechanical engineering umich or atleast engineering?
yes
U mind sharing ur essays? If that’s alr w u
Sorry, they're somewhat personal. But if you have any specific questions about umich's essays I can try my best to answer
That’s alr, I just wanted to know if since im applying for a STEM major, is there any difference in how I should answer the essays also what should i research about when writing the Why US essay
My community essay for umich was completely unrelated to my major or CoE (comp sci) -- it was about my ethnicity, so for that one you don't have to do anything special or related to STEM. One thing I tried to do in this one was to show growth from start to end.
In the Why Umich, you can research clubs that sound interesting to you and relate them back to your experiences in school or HS clubs and/or what you plan on doing in them, classes you're interested in and why, and anything else that catches your interest on their website (I wrote about a living learning community I'm interested in as well). Make sure to tie the things you mention back to yourself in some way
Should I talk about fit and things I’ve done since applying in my LOCI?
Yes, probably (but I don't have any experience in writing locis)
My community essay was about my religious community(I’m asian male though)
For my why michigan, yeah, just connect yourself back to COE
Use the COE mission statements
when does financial aid and scholarship info come out for ea admits?
thx for your response man really appreciate it, I just spend the last hour and a half researching and I think I found some pretty good topics, i found some courses that Im interested in but how do I know if I'll even get these courses? I dont wanna mention a course that's like impossible for me to take yk?
what's COE
I might talk about that too, I memorized the entire Quran when I was younger and religion is a huge part of my identity, at first I thought mentioning political things weren't good but ima talk about it now
Religion is not political at all and if it’s a big part of ur identity you should mention it because it gives depth to your character
Just tie it in with engineering somehow
Maybe mention the golden age of Islam with all the developments in physics
ngl thats a good idea
idk man i think here in saudi we have way too many college advisors that tell us to try not to mention islam
idk why but thats what they've been telling me for the past 3 years
Look up the course guide for your major
This is probably not necessarily needed for the community essay, you'll be talking about engineering through all the rest of your application anyway
Alr thank you all
Yeah I was saying in general I didn’t know which essay he was talking about
yes I didn't talk about eng at all in my community essay
yea i got in meche
i talked about church in my community essay
nothing about eng
Anyone able to get into LSA scholarships yet
No
supplemental essay done 🔥
i know it’s good because i’m dreading having another person lay eyes on it
Help I haven’t even started
I’ll do it tmrw (i won’t)
Historically when has umich rd decisions come out
last friday of jan
around ivy day
no waitlist?
you can get these qs easily answered by googling it
Maybe I'm bad at googling because I didn't find anything
Last Friday of March I thinn
Eci isnt required right
I dont rly have anything new to report cause i submitted less than a week ago rd 💀
Not required
Ok thx
it was march 30th when i applied RD last year
I also submitted a LOCI even though i wasnt required to bc I was regular decision
isn't transfer scary
cuz u already have a friend group and stuff
and then others at the new uni would most probably have formed cliques
the only scary thing about it is finding housing lol
I dont have any friends at my current college so transferring is 100% easy
im in my freshman year so i have been at my current college for like 5months
but are you sure u'll make friends at the new uni
def yea
I think i will be comfortable making friends at a college that i actually like and want to stay at
i was considering applying for transferring if i dont get into my dream uni
chances are low transferring but still
ah
well
i still have a year 🙏🏼
What’s the dream
i'd say apply to schools that you can 80% see yourself staying at for 4years (i sorta didnt) and if you have the reasons to transfer then do it
carnegie
Ooo all the best
I SHDVE APPLIED INFORMATION SYSTEMS BRUH
You did cs?
id pay extra to go to CMU frr
I also got into Ross and from what I can tell, the beginning of each campus day is with like everyone and then the afternoon splits off into specific schools, aka Ross
The days where Ross happens might not be every time though, idk, if you're in your portal, it shows the first year Ross admit campus day options
Campus Day offers you the unique opportunity to experience campus as an admitted student. Join us for Campus Day to tour campus, learn more about what it means to be a Wolverine, and have your questions answered by current students, faculty, and staff before deciding to Go Blue!
Should show here
Does anyone know if the defer rate differs for the different schools within UMich?
There's no official data for that
I mean it's simply too hard to tell. Many people get deferred from a multitude of colleges here
No one really tracks this
Nor do we take notice of this as it's useless to think about
where are you at rn?
what do you not like abt it?
doesnt have the major i want, location, want to go oos, and i dont love love the school like other studentz
cant imagine graduating there
will applying rn compared to applying 1 month ago mean less chance of getting in
no
alr thx
LSA Honors prompt 💀
is this on commonapp??
did anyone talk about umich outside of the specific dept you applied to in their second essay
I didn't even mention any programs specific to CoE, treated it as a normal Why School essay and talked about clubs, classes, etc
Nah it's after you get admitted
fr? isnt the prompt about the specific undergraduate College or School or am i trippin
I did this in part because CS at CoE vs. CS at LSA are pretty similar
the only difference is like a few different required core classes
but since the essay is so lengthy i assume they definitely want more than just the school you chose
makes sense, they worded it rather narrowly for such a long essay tho
yeah i have no idea why it's worded like that
Any tips on prompt 2
money hungry college
Worth every penny
biggest imo is just to relate it back to yourself and the previous experiences you have, write about how you see yourself in the clubs/classes/etc that you mention, what you'll do in them, etc. (this goes for any why school essay though i think)
thanks umcih admission system r really weird 😭
wish they actually gave us dates for things instead of just leaving us to figure things out yeah
They give everyone the opportunity to write a loci, even if you applied regular, for some reason
Do I have to write a loci? I lowkey haven't done anything in senior yr
They’ll still look at your app sooo
If you don’t care about Michigan then it would just be a waste of time to write it
Like all I can say is that my grades went up a lot and I joined a club. Idk if it's worth writing about
Don’t they take mid year report? If you did write it I’d connect the experiences at that new club to UMich and just write a mini why us in that format
I don’t believe you should mention higher grades in a LOCI, they see that in your mid year report
One persons experience doesnt define the entire uni, most of their rant about CS quite honestly is on them, not the uni itself 💀
There are plenty of people happy with the uni within this server itself, and even in the comments of the thread u posted
Ive interacted a lot with the people there, and i personally know some that go there too
Id rather trust them over some random nobody commenting on reddit of all places
its more of how well u can handle peer pressure i guess
cmu cs is toughest in the world
its like the
USC but the East side
its a good school and all
and i would go there
only if they'd let me in and if i could afford prob
its just mad expensive
cmu and usc are two very different schools lmfao
one is a notorious party/athletics school in a city known for being warm and sunny with a very prevalent “work hard, play hard” mentality and the other is a pretty small D3 grindset culture school in quite possibly the greyest city in the u.s. that’s referred to as pittsburgh’s last steel factory
they’re both great schools but they have very different cultures
do applicants usually indicate that they want to do preferred admission?
is cmu really that notorious????
im not saying its not hard
its top school for cs so ofc it would be difficult
but when i visited there were a lot of students chilling outside playing volleyball or reading a book or having a picnic
there was a lot of green space too
it was really nice so i always get confused when i see people say depressing stuff about cmu
pittsburgh is really cold in the winter
the majority of the year you cannot sit outside on the grass bc it’s too cold or it’s raining
and when you combine insanely difficult academics with a very unwelcoming outside environment and not a ton of school-sanctioned distractions other than a band with bagpipes and drums it starts do wear you down
when i interviewed for umich i talked to current students in my program at the time and one of them said she chose it over carnegie mellon because when she interviewed for cmu every student she spoke with sounded absolutely miserable
umich is also in a very cold place and has difficult academics but it’s on a beautiful campus and has a ton of school spirit and has pretty vibrant social scenes
i fw the cmu vibe unironically
not the lack of social life, but the academic focus and rigour
Yes
thats all of them
I wrote about playing brawl stars and sleeping in class
depends on what u expect from college tbh
if u wanna grind all 4 yrs
and feel like ur gonna do it irrespective of any factors
cmu is better
Did you guys get the Regents Scholarship and is it hard to get or waht
do they jsut give itout to everyone
I just got it too
u already got into priceton tho smh stop taking peoples mone y
💔
I wonder if its common tho
no its sitll miserable
its probably not as miserable as cmu
but still miserable
definitely stay west if ur from the west
Not really. It really depends on how you make the most of your college experience, but also how the college culture influences that. I, and thousands of other kids have had a wonderful time here while not seeing how it's miserable.
Perhaps the culture here didn't fit with you, which probably makes sense given how negative you are here, and that's totally understandable. But for the majority, a greater amount of people tend to have a positive opinion of the culture here, as opposed to other colleges
same i looked it up and its awarded to the top 1/3 of instate students
Not for OOS?
no
When students apply for financial aid, they are considered for the following aid programs except the Federal Direct PLUS Loan, the Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan, and private loans (students complete separate applications for these, learn more on our Loans webpage). To be eligible for most programs, a student must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible...
i would take miserable at a beautiful school with great school spirit over miserable in pittsburgh
Anyone know when cs advance selection comes out?
From what i heard it comes out tmr
How did you find out 😭😭😭
They sent an email if u got it
what's the least amount of words I can write in the 550 word essay without looking like im lazy? I dont wanna write too much and ruin it
They should've given a minimum word count
they did? i dont think so
hold on let me check
oh it says 100
but i feel like if i do 100 it's like im asking to not be accepted
is 400-450 good?
That's fine. As long as you're able to send the message between that word count amount
UMICH CS IS OUT
Got in from LSA 🙏
Congrats to all that got into the smelliest major in the university ☺️
ADVANCE SELECTION IS OUTTT
what does advance selection even do idk i js clicked on it
what is that^^
did you get cs
math + data science my goat
yes
thats pretty fire ngl
ong
fuck cs
atleadst i wont be associated with CS 😹🙏🏼
(this is copium)
its alr ngl
Yeah, instead you'll be associated as another form of a oversaturated career that'll be unemployed

im not doing quant
And?
trust
Silly wsg, working in a homeless shelter isn't a career ☺️ ☺️
i’m just gonna be better and not be unemployed
if i got advance selection for cs do i have to major in cs
or is it just an option
its jst an option
yay i got cs:D wasn’t expecting it so im surprised ngl
omg same congrats
now i don’t know if i should major in cs or not
If you get COE you almost always get CS
LSA is more volatile
i see, that makes sense
Erm...no
That isn't true...
😭 oh, whats the % who get cs who apply for it if you know?
Idk just from like
friends who've gotten mich
I've noticed most people who get COE get CS but id
k
I mean that's your perspective though. I know plenty that got into COE but got rejected by CS
That data has officially not been released
Safely put, you should just assume the acceptance to getting into CS is worse than getting into COE or LSA
got it
is it ok if i mention that I want to take a minor in the essay even tho i havent mentioned it anywhere else in my application?
So cs AR < lsa AR?
And uiuc still flat out rejected me 🧍
Hello
Again, there is no official data for this. But this is under the assumption that CS is one of the most competitive majors, and it definitely is with Michigan
is there an info sci advanced selection?
nope mine isn't out
Not advanced selection
But like
preferred
or whatever it's called
ah
I did
Nice thx
for admitted students: what college were you accepted to?
11
21
1
LSA
LMFAO
If you say you're not asking for need-based financial aid, are your chances for admission higher?
no
Huh, I'm surprised that it's required.
yea
if u withdrawing Umich, GIVE ME
Bro i just got into cs advance but i lowk do not wanna do it
bro this BETTER be an option
Idk if this has already been said but does anyone know when aid/merit scholarships will release?
They'll usually be revealed in your financial aid offer if you get one. However, do look to see if there are any scholarships here that have deadlines for you to apply to
Ah ok. Yeah I did that scholarship checkbox thing in the wolverine friend account section, qualified to like 2 or 3 I think, are there any other scholarships I can look for?
havent gotten financial aid offer yet but I heard that was released march-april
What are some reasons I should not choose Michigan/what do current students not like?
Besides the price 💀
Its ann arbour
What's bad about ann arbor?
Its ann arbor
😭
I liked Ann Arbor when I visited
i thought ann arbor was nice
Yeah, I've only ever heard good things
weather ig
I'm guessing that was last year during the FAFSA crisis but when I got accepted, I got my financial aid offer around February
The weather varies. I love snow, but it do be raining a good amount and when it ices, the roads and sidewalks are BAD to walk in.
It gets extremely cold at times. Coming from someone from NYC, I'm used to cold weather and adjusted but Michigan weather is next level
The university is incredibly big, and I mean really big. Commuting around classes, especially for me who lives in Central and has majority of their classes in North and some in Central, can be incredibly annoying since the bus system, although good, can be very annoying
a michigan student who's from my town told me that ann arbor feels exactly the same as where we're from 💀
so yay
when'd you submit your FAFSA and CSS when you applied?
womp
Back when I applied, I submitted them all on Octoberish. But as long as you submitted them by the priority deadline(which was earlier for FAFSA), you'd usually get them by February
we saw that
That was how it was for me at least since everyone I knew who got in EA got their aid package by then
Keep in mind it was 2022 though
the FAFSA opened dec 1st this year so it might be delayed
Probably, but colleges made estimated financial aid packages through the CSS Profile since FAFSA and CSS are quite similar with CSS needing to know more
alright time to grind the supps
Mmm yeah that's fair. I hadn't really considered campus size (geographically)
How bad is the housing situation rn?

It's not as bad compared to like Berkeley
But housing is pretty bad here. I was lucky to find cheap housing off campus that's near thankfully
That said, if you're high income you prolly won't have any issues with housing
Or if you decide to join those honors colleges or RC where you get guaranteed dorm housing there's that
hey I’m the application it says “ do you wish to provide details of circumstances or Qualifications not reflected in the applications”
I clicked yes, and no new text box pops up. Anyone else?
i heard it's nearly impossible to get a dorm if you're not a freshman
I wouldn't say it's nearly impossible but it's definitely quite unlikely
Most students here live off campus
in your experience is it cheaper to live off campus?
There's definitely more options in finding cheaper housing with off campus. Gotta remember living in the dorm is basically $15,238 for 8 months(school time). That's basically 1.9k per month.
Greek life housing costs similar. Co-op housing is way cheaper(like below 1k usually) but you're required to do like 4 hrs of chores a week which aren't bad but not someone's forte for some. Obviously for those 2, you never know if those communities will fit with you and you might not like it there.
For the usual off campus housing, the costs without a roommate can be similar or higher if you want to be near campus. With roommates it's usually cheaper.
Obviously, if you're willing to take a larger commute, there's a lot more cheaper housing from there.
u have to start looking for off campus living in like sept or early oct too
Yikes
Yeah I am definitely not high income lol
Sucks that housing is so hard to find; do most people get stuck with expensive off campus housing?
No, unless you're rich
Most either get similar to dorm costs or less
I mean I'm paying 750 a month and I'm by east quad
just submitted everyone wish me luck
Ok that's a relief to hear
Good luck!
750????!!!! 😭 that's so much cheaper compared to me
IM FREEEEEEE
lets gooooooo
i'm 99% chance gonna get rejected but idc at this point
no have hope
these are dark times rn
We'll all be feeling better in a month when the hype has built back up again
i won’t take it too hard if i get rejected bc i’ve been accepted by 4 colleges i would be happy to go to
they arent top 30 or anything crazy like that but i like them
i cannot focus on umich prompts wtf ☠️
does that matter?
bro gtech actually like
is it local
yea fr
same
actually i recycled my cornell essays
im being so serious its literally the same
thats the strat tho
bruh i told myself i wouldnt write last minute ☠️
i also copy and pasted but i did have to do a bit more writing than usual for this one
actually i almost made the mistake of writing about the residential colleges when im a stem major
💀
but ive been dragging out the application across like multiple days ☠️
ugh same
☠️
its prob cause this is the last one for me
no more stress
yeahh
AHH NICE
we're gonna slay and eat them up
no crumbs
yes!
theres a lot more koreans than i expected here ☠️
me too 👍
dude this server is probably like 70% asian
😭
ah exactly how the world should be
isnt it already lol
asians probably make up most of the worlds population
i would still imagine at most like 40% tho
prob not like 70% ☠️
i think it was like 55% ish
really?
4.5B?
oh wtf ur right
oh i was only thinking of like china and india
u prob also needa add the asian diaspora in other countries
can someone help me with prompt 2
is that the why umich one?
ye
about the specific schools
im so stressed
pls helpppppp
what specifically are you stressed abt
for mine, i just went onto the page for my major and did a really big deep dive into what exactly i want to do
like what classes i want to take, which professors i want to work with, and i gave examples of what specifically i would do
i was thinking that if i jus tmention stuff abt the school it wouldnt stand out cuz everyone else is doing that
so i was thinking about using an analogy but it doesnt make sense cuz i cant incorporate that into the entire essay
theres only so much things that ppl can put on an essay
its fine to have some generic stuff, but the key is connecting it to you
how do i do that though
like how will umich's resources help u achieve ur goals?
i mean saying you really like the football team won't do anything, but i wrote about how i would incorporate my interests (the beatles and world war i 😭) into the work that i do and how i would make a difference
mm
i said that i want to go to med school, so ill take advantage of the lsa bio health and society major, and i also want to study korean, so ill take advantage of study aborad programs
- research and career stuff
In mine I did
- Why I liked Computer Engineering
- What drew me to a specific professor, why I liked his research, and how it related to projects I had done
- Talked about a club at UMich and how it related to my robotics experience
thats pretty much what im tryna do as well
yea mine was pretty similar i said i want to continue my research expereinces
in bio
and then maybe a quirky fact or tradition
should i talk about clubs
"ill see myself in the bleachers, cherring on as the wolverines destroy the whatever ohio state mascot is
i did it in the community essay
can i show you what i have
sure
ok let me fix it rq cuz its buns rn
dms?
yes theyre open
Mich
real
honestly mine wasn't too great but i still got in oos
instead of focusing on the content itself i made sure to sound super authentic
i conveyed pretty much the same whimsical tone i had in my common app essay
Did you get in?
the one time i'm a minority
LOL
Need help w prompt 2
What do i include as a prospective economics major
LSA first year
yeah
its less about talking about specific programs and more about connecting them to urself
and talk about how you personally align with the schools mission
rip
they admit by school not major
so school of information
if you want to major in cs you need to apply for advance selection in cs major
go ahead
yo wait ur cs major right
what did u put at the very top of the academics section of common app
lsa or engineering?
cauase the school of information is smth called preferred admission so i think thats smth different
apparently they have this program or smth where u can transfer to that other college during ur upper years
i think
wait i'm confused
yea this whole michigan thing is so confusing
which school within michigan did you apply to
for us undergrads the major in information is the ONLY major in school of information
what school are u applying to within michigan
engineering or lsa
this is what i put
ur LSA
ur in LSA
wait
wait so how can i do information
"Preferred Admission (PA) is a way for you to indicate an interest in later transferring to an upper-level program, or the Ross School of Business. Acceptance guarantees placement in that academic unit if you meet certain prerequisites during your first year at U-M. The prerequisites vary, of course, depending on which unit is chosen."
yeah so ur not school of information rn
wait can selecting advance selection into cs major make u it less likely to get into umich?
ik the cs thing itself is even more competitive
no
but how about for getting into umich at all
ohh
oh shoot then i'll hm
cause i was aiming for data science major..
they dont tell u if u got advance selection until after u get in
ohhhh
i got advance selection for cs
but i dont need to major in cs
its just an option
first they accept you into michigan then they consider you for advance selection
wait my essays are geared towards data science major but i would like to keep cs open then should i select advance selection?
yes
man umich is making it confusing for no reason
ikr i was confused what that preferred admission thing was
congrats
thank you
idk if preferred admission is like advance selection tho
like advance selection has no impact on ur admissions decision idk about preferred admission
this is almost exactly what i did lol
well its just a way for the AO to know what ur interested in
so do they basically determine if they'll admit u into the school and then determine if u want to admit u into cs?
yeah
ooooh okok
very cool okok
i talked about MIDAS and some eecs classes
bruh i was taking data science route to avoid all the cs ppl but everyone else is doing the same thing ☠️
did you do preferred admission
no
hm
i'm doing the same thing lol
idk just make sure ur essay is connected to you
like dont just talk about programs at michigan talk about how they align with you and make you a good fit
no worries i would genuinely major in data science
yeah ofc ofc
i hope i wrote it well..
yeah i think ima either do computer engineering cs or data science
i talked about michigan data science team
honestly i dont think my why umich essay was superb or anything lol
i think my community essay was really good and my why mich essay was okay
don't just include it to include it
true..
they'll consider me for the school of education even tho my interest is cs right? my aspirations relate to cs and education
yeah
seems cool
wait how do i get image perms
do you think i should submit a 1510 (i got into neu cs with it)
hm
have u checked cds
i submitted my 1460 740 math 720 eng to all my schools
not all of them but most
wait ur in the range submit it 100%
has anyone used a fee waiver
i did
not income based
which one?
really?
i used the family situation one
did u use any of these
no
im thinking of using this too
but i heard that they are picky
i think its worth submitting
do you need the fee waiver
i only used it because i'm applying to 40 collegees and ain't no way i'm paying 3k
u need to be homeless or a victim of a natural disaster appearntly
yea same i dont wanna pay
;sob
well tbf my math score is only 10 points above urs and i got cs
so
thank you i literally cried when i opened it lol
wait rlly?
rooting for u
lol i was like that for neu too
did u get into boston
yeah i did
hoping you get the best
are you in state or oos
ngl i'm just gonna use it
so hopefully with need-based + merit i get enough
ok good luck
i used family situation one and they didnt ask any questions
umich gives merit?
yeah
fr?
fuck...
idk if i should use it
can u afford it?
use it then
my income isnt low enough for the fee waiver
do you guys think ur parents retiring and having a massive income cut is a legit excuse
only for some
ok worst thing that can happen is them saying no and i pay later
it wont hurt to try
yeah just do it man
ok abt to submit
ya
glll
i see i see
When I went to submit the site was bugging and it went through a few minutes late. Would they still accept it? Idk what to do
yes
few minutes is fine
they're not that pedantic
Ok phew
I filled out my app for RD a few days ago and they are asking for an loci?
will it help if I submit it
If they are, then go for it
is the first wave of early ross preferred admission coming out on this friday
if i get deferred
and i applied for lsa cs advance selection
is there still a chance i get into CS in rd
Yes because they defer everyone oos cause they never hire enough app readers so chances are they haven't even gotten to you yet
Did anyone get their portal yet
lmfao deadass??
thats so funny
they do that?
huh
💀
Probably but they won’t admit it bc it’s embarrassing
idts ngl, i know like atleast 15 intls from my country admitted 💀
Oh
yeah
mich basically js reads as many as they can
then dumps the rest in regular
You can write a lot in 250 words.
You just gotta learn how to do it
😔
what can i write in loci tho
i dont have any new updates
the only possible thing i wanna send them is improvised ec description
Improvised ex description?
The point of an LOCI is to show your continued interest in a college while also providing updates of what you've done between when you submitted your application and when you send the LOCI.
Anything like "a new description for your old ec" isn't really something for an LOCI
You can maybe provide an update to that EC if you did anything special though
this is old one
this is new one
i mean yeah it still isnt impressive
but then
its far better than before
Peer tutoring
